Anyone else have this yet? It's a WW2 RTS and is very good. There's a demo out too, but as the demo is 1.8GB it might be quicker to just go out and buy it. ![]() http://www.companyofheroesgame.com/ |

Charlemagne commended this game to me, so I decided not to open a thread for it here (j/k)You should tell us about the game, Cow. I won't buy just to make your money less wasted, until I know it's worth it. ATM, I don't like the control I have over my troops. Needs too much micromanaging in some ways, and is not permissive enough in other ways. |

Lowest settings, of course. You needn't see the stubble on their ugly visage to be able to play

I can still run almost any game that doesn't require SSE2.... cough MTW2 demo cough.... It's not even on lowest settings. Well the game is an RTS ofc, you gain resources (either manpower, munitions or fuel) through controlling sectors that are connected to your headquarters. You play as either the axis or the allies (which look and sound very much like Americans ). The combat itself involves using squads of infantry, tanks and so on. It has a lot more depth to the combat than most other RTS' I've played, with for example tanks being more vulnerable to being hit from the rear, deployable heavy machine guns (and other weapons) with arcs of firing, being able to give units different weapons (for example anti-tank weapons to basic riflemen), infantry getting suppressed or pinned by oncoming fire, cover giving big advantages for infantry, deploying mortars, artillery etc. etc. Also you can destroy anything you can see and drive tanks through walls. The unit AI is pretty good too, for example with squads automatically making use of cover when told to attack. I haven't found the micromanagement too bad so far. I've played a few 1v1s and a 2v2 online so far along with playing the campaign. It basically is quite a well put together game.

Sound like the Microsoft Close Combat games. They were good and had almost all the stuff you mentioned. Line of fire, arc of fire, suppression, tank weak spots. Mortars, smoke grenades (and smoke mortars), AT infantry (bazooka or panzerfaust), AT guns, half-tracks. There's terrain that provide concealment, but not protection, like bushes or high grass. Slight terrain differences could be used for cover, like the crest of a hill, or holes from artillery. Is there morale in the game? In CC, low morale men in a unit could panic when under stress and either cower in a corner or flee the battle. |

There isn't really morale, though infantry under heavy fire first get suppressed where they dive to the floor and move slowly (not sure what effect it has on the combat), and then pinned where they do not return fire at all and don't respond to orders except to retreat. Retreating means they just run back to the headquarters ignoring everything. |
