New article by Douglas Gentile claims 1 in 10 American kids age 8 to 18 have a pathological addiction to gaming. First off, it's not an addiction because it's not a chemical dependancy, so they claim it's a pathological (like gambling). My favourite part is where he mentions that people with ADD or ADHD are twice as likely to be pathological gamers. So they have ADD, but can focus on gaming for vast amounts of time. Huh? Brief Article Full Journal Article Here are the 11 symptoms used, let's see how everyone fairs: ![]() My biggest concern with the 8-18 range and using pathological gambling as a guideline for establishing symptom criteria is that 8-18 year olds don't necessarily have much money, so all the money questions are kind of weak. Skipping homework and chores? Again...8-18 year olds...c'mon. Playing video games to release bad feelings...is that a bad thing? Violent crime in youths has decreased since the early-mid 90s in America...so perhaps they are venting out in games? Basically, addictive personalities are just that. If people are easily addicted to something, it will happen in one form or another. Like David Duchovny and sexaholism. |

our society always has to find something to blame for one thing or another, or complain about something. |

It sounds a bit of a stupid article really, saying that some kids having a "pathological addiction to gaming" based on some random questions that basically ask are kids kids, wow really some children spend too much money on games, don't do household chores, spend time playing games instead of homework... The only real question has that guy ever actually met any children, or is he just trying to justify his funding. Playing to parent's fears about x, y or z is very easy. Some children read a lot of fiction books, why not do the same study about children's pathological addiction to reading. I know, why not do a study on some people's pathological addiction to make pointless studies. Over time have you spent more and more time thinking about your next pointless study? Do you need to spend more and more time coming up with more ideas over your next pointless study? Have you tried getting a real job, but been unsuccessful? Do you get irritable when people tell you this is a pointless study? Do you make pointless studies to feel better? Have you ever lied about how much time you spend making pointless studies? Have you ever made false claims or falsfied records so as to allow you to make more pointless studies? Do you sometimes claim to be too busy with your pointless study to do the washing up? Do you sometimes skip doing actually valuable work so as to do your pointless study? Have you ever had people not want to speak to you because you're such a boring sod forever talking about your pointless study? Have you ever asked for funding from family and friends to complete your pointless study? |

Gentile has done quite a lot of work on violence in gaming as well as gaming as an addiction. He has found his niche in the world of academia and is making a career of it. The same can be said of this guy named Anderson who has done studies about gaming and aggression. Basically his studies found that after playing a violent video game people press a responder button faster than those who played less or non violent games. Well no ######. When I play basketball or hockey I get amped as well and am far more aggressive. My favourite quote from an author I cited extensively in my thesis is "If you want to lower violence, then worry about those contexts which all extend well beyond just playing video games. Politicians who get hot and heavy about violence in video games usually don’t want to worry about such contexts—contexts like poverty, bad parenting, and a culture that celebrates greed, war, and winning. Too expensive, perhaps." |

If you substitute the word "having" for "playing, and "sex" for "video games" into that survey, I think 90% of all people who have a pulse would answer "yes" to every question. The rest would be lying. |

I'm not going to say that I haven't gotten to the point where I would wake up, play 16 hours of gaming, go to sleep at 6am, and repeat the process for several days, but I managed to graduate uni 3 times and have infrequent relationships, so whatever. It can get bad, but at least I'fm not smokingb pole for rock. |
