Well this year was another disappointment. There were some gems, but for the most part I wasn't wowed like I have been in previous years. The blockbusters were a bust as far as I am concerned. Knowing was good until they bent me over and ravaged my fanny with the ending. 2012 was a big pile of donkey balls. Watchmen had some good, but was drawn out and couldn't decide whether to be true to the comic or to be a proper adaptation. Wolverine was decent as far as acting is concerned, and the cameo appearance of Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool suggested there may be a Deadpool movie coming out, which made me happy even after the crappy plot of Wolverine. Angels and Demons was at least better than the Davini Code, but still could have been better. Terminator Salvation may have been the first terminator movie I fell asleep through, though upon rewatching it, there were some redeeming qualities (like the breakout of Sam Worthington). I'm mixed on Inglorious Basterds, as it was good in parts, but Tarantino continues to have pacing problems and his dialogue:stuffactuallyhappening ratio is always off. I never saw Twilight because I'm not a 13 year old girl -- and I didn't see Harry Potter because the movies have been going downhill since the first one, nor have I read the books. Avatar gave my eyes an orgasm, but the plot -- in the words of Blitz -- was essentially Pocahontas. It was so ridiculously predictable it made me a sad melon, and the 3D was nothing special (especially after seeing the Alice in Wonderland trailer). Transformers was what I expected: bad puns and CGI battles, annnnnd Megan Fox. I had low expectations going in so I guess that's what made it alright. I have yet to see Star Trek, but I have heard that it was good. As for complete and utter failures...I direct your attention to Dragonball Evolution, which completely victimized my childhood love for DBZ. Now I realize DB/Z/GT had horrible plots as well with entire episodes consisting of Goku having a fart or scratching his privates, I expected more out of...wait...Fox? Ya that's about right then. I guess this is the reason I didn't watch GI Joe, and probably never will. The Year One showed potential from the trailer, but might go down as one of the worst movies ever made...ever. Observe and Report was by and large Seth Rogen's worst movie to date, and it's not because "I don't get it" like all the fans of the movie say to people who don't like it. It was all Seth Rogen dropping F-bombs, which can be funny in moderation, but the plot was boring and nothing about the movie was amusing. Although I have man-love for Ryan Reynolds, The Proposal was trash. TRASH. Jennifer's Body was absolutely terrible. It was essentially 1h30m of Megan Fox, which is why it probably broke even at the box office. So I have a lot to complain about, eh? Well here is what I thought was good. Taken made Liam Neeson a badass, and proved to be a sick action movie that was well acted and actually persuaded me to see it in theatres after pirating it (which is a rarity). The Road was a solid 8/10 (as IMDB rates it), with amazing acting and a word for word adaptation from the Cormac McCarthy (sp?) novel. Viggo and the little kid were just incredible. And finally a movie that doesn't have a predictable linear plot, though the end was a bit conventional, I suppose. Invictus was alright, and I mean you can't go wrong with Damon and Freeman. The final match was drawn out, but aside from that it had good pacing. District 9 was by far the biggest shock, as I thought it was going to be a big pile of anus, but it surprised me. Again, low expectations might have made it better, but as far as Sci-Fi goes, it was a winner. The Hurt Locker was probably the best movie of the year imo. It didnt require big Hollywood money, but sure made an impact. Hell of a movie, check it out. It was a good year for Gerard Butler, despite many of his movies being sub-par. Gamer was weird, but in a good way. The Ugly Truth was boring, and its not because of the romantic comedy genre, cause I don't mind chick flicks, they just have to work harder to get my approval Law Abiding Citizen was good despite the ridiculous ending and Jamie Foxx's presence. Jesse Eisenberg had a breakout year with Education of Charlie Banks which I thoroughly enjoyed, Adventureland which was largerly shrugged off because it was advertised to be a SuperBad, and Zombieland which took a Shaun of the Dead stance on mocking zombie movies (in a good way), and warranted a sequel which I will see for sure.So what was your good and bad of 09? |

Hangover grossed almost 450 mil which was a shocker. I love Todd Phillips, though -- Old School is still one of my most favourite comedies. Hopefully he gets back to work soon. As well I think more people are appreciating Zack Galifianakis which is just awesome. |

I thought that's the way you'd prefer it.... ![]() I loved the hijacking of the Rapture lunacy, and the replacement of the biblical creation myth with alien intervention. Extremely satisfying conclusion.... Law Abiding Citizen was excellent, although I would've shot that guy in the first half hour-- it didn't take much to know there was only one way to win that battle..... The International was also v.good.... the dialogue made the movie. Inglorious Bastards.... entertained me well enough flying over the Pacific, although suffers the comparison to Tarantino's other work. Half of what we like or dislike seems to me to be dependent on the predjudice of expectation. District 9 was a shock, but implausably bad. Enjoyed Harry Potter, as usual.... imagination, magic, and the fantasy of saving the world... always a pleasure. Although I don't think anyone knows how to make fighting between wizards interesting... a shot of something that either does or doesn't bounce off an invisible shield, followed by the same. We've seen it many times in many movies already..... Angels and Demons... I made the mistake of reading the book. Haven't seen The Road, Invictus, The Hurt Locker, or Education of Charlie Banks... will do so though. I'm over in Korea for the holidays and The Road just came out in the theaters... will probably check it out. |

It's not a happy movie, Merc, just warning you ![]() Seems people either love or hate District 9. I don't LOVE it, but I thought for a sci fi movie it was better than most.
I find this is true more and more as I hype myself up for seeing movies. Have a fun time in Korea. I'll make my way over there some day

Lol @ the Sherlok Holmes ad that just popped on our forum.... The Holmes plot had complexity... and always love Mason lore. A good mix of story and plot... not all chase and fight, but enough background on the situation to inspire a bit of wonder. The characters had complextiy as well without detracting from the movement of movie... not hard to have simpathy for individuals. One of the better graphical represenations of the period that I've seen... big screen visions of era. Most period pieces give you just glimpses at streets and rooms... Jack the Ripper, Mary Reilly, etc. The dialogue was good... clever, unpredictable responses. The deductive reasoning of the characters also wasn't predictable, which is characterisic of the novels.... would've ruined the movie if it was easy to out-think Holmes and Co. Of course, I had no expectation for the movie, so I was pleasantly surprised on all points.... which always makes it seem better than it may be. I'll have to see it again....
