I was only introduced to this concept a week or so ago, but it got me really inspired and I fully intend to write out the whole short story this week ^_^ My creative writing teacher (because yes, I am nerdy enough to take an extra writing course :cad:) had this really intriguing idea to get writing. He opened up a literature textbook and let it fall on a story. Then he flipped to the beginning of the short story, and he told us to write a story using only the first sentence. He didn't tell us the title of the story or anything, but we had to write. If you don't happen to have a lit textbook nearby, try it with a favorite novel of yours, or maybe a phrase from a poem. It really works! In case you're curious, the sentence he gave our class was this one: None of them knew the color of the sky. Intriguing, isn't it? He had us read aloud our stories that stemmed from this sentence. There were so many variations! So go ahead, be random, go OT - it gets your creative juices flowing and gets you back in the mood to write ^_^ |

I really like this idea and I might try it some time. ^_^ I like to use some techniques like this sometimes when I don't know what to write next in a story and then these excersises get me forward, so I will try this when I get stuck again. Oh and one question. Do you include the sentence in your story or just write something that comes from that? That's a really cool sentense by the way and I'm sure you got interesting stories from it. |

Glad you liked the idea, Annina! ^_^ I hope it works for you! You must use the sentence as the first one in your writing. The sentence he gave us spawned so many variations! Stories of prisoners, villages... and they were all really analytical. I felt pretty shallow, because mine was about three-year-olds  All the same, everything was really interesting. Good luck! |

Aww, that's really cute! I thought of like this village (oh, I hope I'm not tainting someone's random tangent by saying this ...) in which the laws were sort of fluid and so they all just argued about random stuff like the color of the sky. I guess going into the analytical, what really makes it blue? Is it because we say it is? sort of thing. ^_^ But I love the idea of kids not knowing, and that actually sounds like it'd turn into a more solid short story than the vague little village I thought of. Anyway, I love this idea! Maybe we can do some drabble prompts this way? I bet that, with all of our different backgrounds, we'd come up with even more vastly different ideas. :) |

This is such a good idea!! And you can write pretty much any genre you want from that, can't you? It all depends on your view of the sentence. I'd love to have a go at this properly and see what people come up with! |

Elfy and Em, you two are brilliant! I :hearts: your tangent, too, Elfy :) And yes, Em, you can think up basically anything from a single sentence. Mine happened to be fluffy, but there were some angsty/depressing ones in my class. Making drabble prompts from this would be a great idea! So many different things come up when you are random... :hilary: Glad you guys like the idea! |

That's a great idea - I'll definitely use it sometime. I sometimes like to open the nearest book and point at random, and draw inspiration from the word my fingertip lands on. Other times I'll punch a random equation into a calculator, hit the equal button, and go to that page in a dictionary and pick the first or last word there. It's fun :cad: ~Eyriana |

Random things from random pictures makes random pieces of art. XD You can take any sentence and turn it into anything you want to turn it into. |

That's a wonderful idea! I love the sentence, it's really lovely. I want to read the story, now! ^_^ And the dictionary idea is fabulous too, Eyriana. I mean, HELLO. Calculator? WEE. :huggle: I'll have to try both, now. *woohoo* |
