So I’m writing this Next Generation story (pre-DH, so the kids are OCs) here (15+) that involves time traveling. Basically Harry died when they were young and they are going back to try and prevent that from happening so they could have a better world. Here’s where I’m a bit lost. When they return to their time, their memories of their childhood will change and they won’t even remember this whole experience, but what about when they’re still there? Would their memories change as they change the past, or would they still be able to remember how it was supposed to be? I know in PoA it was the latter, but taking into account that Harry and Hermione only went back for a few hours, I think it would be a bit different. If their memories do change, would it affect them physically, like having headaches and the sort? For example, my OC remembered the day his grandfather died, but when he returned to that day, his arrival changed some of the details of the day, like his younger self was supposed to receive this news at home, but this time his younger self wasn’t even around. What would happen to him? Would he still have the memory or would it change? :huggle: |

Wow, Priss, you are asking some serious questions here. :glomp: Well, I haven't really time-traveled (:cad:), but I think that even though in Harry Potter they remember everything all the time, in such matters, this shouldn't be the case. I don't think something will bother them physically, time is out of the body, though the memories are in... That's the hard part, how does time alter our memories inside our heads?! Maybe time, as matter, penetrates the mind, which is also matter.. I think... The memories can't just vanish all of a sudden, they should gradually fade.. For example, while they are changing things, their memories start playing tricks on them in a parallel way. So.. would it be too crazy if at some point they were not really sure what is a real memory (or an old one) and what is not?! But I don't understand why his arrival changed the details.. I mean, they should change when something has changed already, or is his arrival already a change?! Hm, I got myself confused again, lol. In any case, I think the memories fade as the events change, and new ones replace them.. I don't know about headaches really, that should be your choice. ;) You can always play around with it, more or less. Good luck with the story!! :glomp: |

Yeah. I agree with Lyn, I'd say they slowly fade, but eventually would change into the new memories, thus wouldn't even remember their grandfather dying, as they changed the past. Wowee. I'm totally confusing myself. But pretty much, I'd say the memories would change. :) |

Thank you for the answers! :huggle: It definitely helped me decide what I would write in the story. More opinion is still welcomed. ^_^ |

Well, PoA explained it to us, I think, and though I generally ignore canon, in this case I think it's applicable. Harry still retained his memory of Buckbeak dying, though he also had the memory of saving him. It's traveling through parallel worlds - they might have differences, but just because you're in one doesn't mean you forget the changes from the other. See, the characters are really travellers from a parallel universe. They wouldn't remember events that happened to the other version of them. Their memories wouldn't change, because they weren't there for them to be changed. The other version of them was there, the one that grew up in this universe, not the other... Does this help at all? Am I making any sense? NOTE: Ignore the sci-fi terminology. I've been watching way too much Doctor Who. |
