DOES SOMETHING

All of the men and women competing in this year's Olympics in Beijing deserve to be recognized for their outstanding athletic abilities. So, why not give us a little YAY about who you love and why you love them so much?

(Or am I the only one here with a major obsession? :hajadeha:)

Michael Phelps> :elena78: He is a determined, driven man (who goes to University of Michigan :P)... he wants to beat Mark Spitz's record from 1976 and bring home EIGHT gold medals from Beijing. Last night, he broke HIS OWN world record during the 400 IM; taking home his first Gold for 2008. Not only am I obsessed with him because he is living the life I wanted (:lyn: for real!), but because he is doing it better than I would have! :lyn: But, seriously, he is so... just.. *points to sig* :P

Dara Torres. In her career, spanning over 5 olympic games, she has won a total of ten medals. TEN. She swims my strokes, just as Phelps does: Fly and Free; and she's an amazing woman, coming into Beijing at 41 years old, after just having a child. While Michael Phelps is who I wanted to be when I was a teenager, Dara Torres is who I want to strive to be from now on.

*sigh*

Aside from that, I also support Natalie Coughlin, Jessica Hardy and Amanda Beard, Ryan Lochte, Brendan Hansen, Ian Crocker, Mark Gangloff (LEGEND!), Katie Hoff, Christine Magnuson (amazing fly!!), and Peter Vanderkaay.

But not just the Americans, people! I support others as well! Stephanie Rice and Libby Trickett from Australia. Inge Dekker from the Netherlands and Kirsty Coventry from Zimbabwe, and Ioannis Kokkodis from Greece.

*sigh*

Yeah, and that's about all I watch on a strictly obsessive basis. I haven't gotten into the rest, really - just focusing on Phelps and trying not to startle my neighbors from screaming (minus the cursing every other word...) "GO GO GO GO YES YES YES YES GO GO GO! TOUCH THE WALL, GET IN THERE, GO ON! YOU'RE BREASTSTROKE IS SLOW, PUSH ON THE FLY - GO GO GO GO GO!!"

:lyn:

*cough*

I'm really enjoying the swimming, watched every night of the trials last month. :) Although I really want Phelps to break all those records, I want the other people to have a chance ... and they really don't. He's like a freaking dolphin on his turns! :lyn:

I wish I were into fencing because we CLEANED UP yesterday for surezz. Like any girl I like watching gymnastics, and I think I'm rooting for China in the men's competition because they're clearly the best and deserve to win ... and their poor team captain guy, Yang Wei, has the ambition of the country resting on his shoulders. :( And the US team has plenty of time to get better and come back in four years, since all of them are rookies, but I'm a sucker for a good story and two of them came off the reserves to replace the Hamms so I want them to do well. But really, the team's sort of scattered. Ohhhh, did you see that amazing pommel horse routine? :elena78: Artemev? Yeah, he's good. I'm excited for the women's comp since the one girl was in Stick It. :P

Basically I want everyone to winnnnn! I'm not so big into the team sports, but the track relays are always good if that counts for anything.

YES! I was like :o That was SO awesome. And tonight, Shawn Johnson for the USA girl's team - She pwned everything she did.

Totally on pins and needles waiting for Phelps' next final. :P Seriously, I had this thought: if he wins, I stalk him, if he doesn't, I stalk him anyway. :lyn:

*sigh* I LOVE THE OLYMPICS!!

Did you see the diving earlier? Was it me, or was Germany like... really, really good. The US team was sorta off a bit, and Russia was alright... China was, well, China :P They're awesome... but Germany just... BOOF - surprised me.

*can't form coherent sentences*

I didn't see any diving. :o I must get caught up.

That men's 4x100 relay was TEH INTENSE. My heart was in my throat for the entire second half. The interview afterward was love, they seem like a really great team - I espesh loved when they said that they ignored what the Frenchies were saying about them. :hearts:

I'm such a swimming fangirl for someone who's never raced in her life.

P.S. Have you seen that commercial for the phone with the girl with the t-shirt that says Phelps Phan on it? Yeah, that reminds me of you. B)

Oh yeah, that 4x100 relay was uber amazing. I couldn't believe how much power Leezak put into that last 25m... he totally came through...and then the way that Phelps was screaming... it was like :o :D :o :D :lyn: Wonderful.

:glomp: I'm so glad you're following the olympics (swimming especially :P), because I feel like a freak here with everyone looking at me like .

Diving semifinals took place yesterday and I think it was China, Germany, Russia and US who placed 1-4.

I've been following this schedule:

(Ohhhh, and I LOVE that commercial!!! :D)

Yay! Other Olympic fans. I have been following it all so closely. The events are wonderful, but what really knocked me off my feet was the opening ceremony. Talk about beyond awesome. I think I almost melted watching it. *woohoo*

Otherwise I follow all of the diving and swimming competitions along with all the gymnastics. Michael Phelps is really awesome, and I am rooting for him all the way. He works so hard, and is always so determined, it just makes you want to support him. :elena78:

I also really support Shawn Johnson as well. :) It's not just because she lives around here, and I want to support an Iowan, but also because she works hard as well. I felt sorry for the American team, they were having some troubles although they ended up doing awesome, but constantly Shawn and Nastia were hitting everthing.

And can I say I love Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh. :andy: They work so well together, and they are just awesome. They seem like the perfect team, and they play as if they are the perfect team as well.

I adore the Olympics :elena78:

INTJ ftw

So I just spent all afternoon looking up records and trying to figure out who else would be on the 4x100 medley relay before realizing that they hadn't announced that yet. But I did learn some of the interesting things about the sport, such as for the relays, if you compete in the heats it's cool if you don't wanna do the final but you still want the medal. ;) So ... that's pretty spiffy. But for serious, there are so many excellent 100m men that I'd have a tough time if I were picking for the medley.

Ohhhh, the opening ceremony was amazing! I espesh liked the commentary about breaking down the wall and opening up to the world and stuff. But to my family the dancing got boring so we channel surfed and missed some of the cultural points. <_<

Have you guys been watching NBC? Did you see that special on the 33 year old German gymnast? I thought the connection between her son's treatment and Nastia's dad's help was really sweet. :hearts:

May/Walsh are a ton of fun to watch! It's kind of odd that they were seeded no. 2 just so the home team go the no. 1 spot? But, yeah, I can't see anyone beating their team skillz.

Grrrg, there's still half a week before track stuff starts. I know it sounds like I'm only into the big sports ... and I am ... but, all in all, Olympic spirit is what gets to me. :P

I missed the opening ceremony... but I watched it On Demand with my cable provider, so I got to see it post-present. I think that was amazing - I mean, the culture they brought to it and the way they've made it their own show, just beautiful. :elena78:

Oh, the American gymnastics team last night, Anna, you're right, they had so many problems... I kept having to turn my head every time they jumped out of bounds or when Nastia fell... holy moly! She STILL scored good considering though!

OH my goodness, I nearly CRIED when watching that last night, Marissa. With that little boy. It was so sweet - watching him tumble around trying to be like his mom. :hearts:

You know, I have a hard time watching track stuff... Like, I can watch it, but I'm always terrified someone is going to break something and I'll see it. Freaks me out.

Tonight!!! Lots of swimming. *dons Phelps gear* Only 4 more hours til that man is in the pool doing his best competition... eeeeep!! PHELPS! PHELPS! PHELPS! *stalks him more*

I think I should get a pair of omnioculars and see if I can see the water cube from here.... :D

Oooh...I missed the Opening Ceremonies, too, and totally forgot to set the DVR to record it. I'll have to check my On Demand to see if they have it there.

I haven't been able to watch as much as I'd like, but thanks for the schedule link. I love the gymnastics and the swimming and the diving. Mark Lenzi (won the gold in '92 I think--Barcelona) used to swim for the same team as my sister in VA. Now, she was no where near in the same league, and she was about 10 when she was on the team. Jeff Rouse who medaled in the freestyle in the same Olympics was also on that team.

I FINALLY MADE 1000 POSTS

I am seriously bouncing up and down in my seat right now. I cannot wait until tonight. Last night I was yelling at the TV, so excited watching the 4x100 relay, cheering for the US. I'm sooo competitive, I was trash talking the French Team when they lost. I'm such a bad winner (even if it's not me personally winning but the US). :lyn: When Michael Phelps (:hearts:) shook hands with the French after getting his medal, I was like he's so nice! I would never have done that! :lyn: But the French deserved it, 'We're going to smash the Americans' Hah! They deserve losing!!! :hajadeha: I should calm down now I guess... :lyn:

:lyn: cassie, you just turned into my favorite person ever. :lyn:

Taryn, On Demand should have it in the Olympic Replays section under Sports and Fitness - Beijing Olympics. ^_^ I hunted that section down last week :lyn:

Okay, the fact that your sister knows Mark Lenzi is amazing. And Jeff Rouse!! I wanna move to VA!!!

...then again, Michael Phelps is closer here. :lyn:

I was just looking Lenzi up on Wiki...I think I may have gotten things mixed up...he's from Huntsville, which is where my parents live NOW, so he wouldn't have been on the team in VA, but he and Jeff Rouse competed in the same Olympics (who won the gold in the backstroke not freestyle), and Jeff was definitely from VA (born in Fredericksburg about 10 miles south of where I grew up), so I think I merged them together in my mind, lol. But it was a long time ago, lol. There was another Olympian from the Devil Dolphins, but I can't remember his name at all.

I love the Olympics and I've been trying to follow as much as I can. I've been working a lot, so it's not easy, but I've been watching most of the swimming and gymnastics and just a bit of the soccer (now that's on at a terrible time, thank you DVR).

I love Michael Phelps. He's amazing. And that look on his face last night when the relay team won. Wow! I love how he still gets so excited after every win, even though he's won so many. I loved him in Athens.. I love him now. I love his mother's reaction as well. I'm routing for Katie Hoff as well. My best friend's parents work with her dad, I think. There's some kind of connection there. Did anyone catch that race last night, where she got the silver? I really thought she won it. I love Dana Torres' story as well. I saw her in the trials, and she had a difficult time just reading time to see that she won. :) I hope to catch her.

And how about those U.S. men in gymnastics right now? I'm looking forward to more of Shawn Johnson as well. I saw her in the trials and she was great. She seems to really enjoy what she's doing too.

I can't wait for the track and field too. I love watching with my dad.. he was a runner (and still has records at his college), and I love hearing his insight about the races.

Jonathan Horton is my new favorite Olympian! He is kicking some gymnastics butt, is a cutie pie and just encouraged his team in a pep talk "No Fear, No Regrets!"
