DOES SOMETHING

All of the men and women competing in this year's Olympics in Beijing deserve to be recognized for their outstanding athletic abilities. So, why not give us a little YAY about who you love and why you love them so much?

(Or am I the only one here with a major obsession? :hajadeha:)

Michael Phelps> :elena78: He is a determined, driven man (who goes to University of Michigan :P)... he wants to beat Mark Spitz's record from 1976 and bring home EIGHT gold medals from Beijing. Last night, he broke HIS OWN world record during the 400 IM; taking home his first Gold for 2008. Not only am I obsessed with him because he is living the life I wanted (:lyn: for real!), but because he is doing it better than I would have! :lyn: But, seriously, he is so... just.. *points to sig* :P

Dara Torres. In her career, spanning over 5 olympic games, she has won a total of ten medals. TEN. She swims my strokes, just as Phelps does: Fly and Free; and she's an amazing woman, coming into Beijing at 41 years old, after just having a child. While Michael Phelps is who I wanted to be when I was a teenager, Dara Torres is who I want to strive to be from now on.

*sigh*

Aside from that, I also support Natalie Coughlin, Jessica Hardy and Amanda Beard, Ryan Lochte, Brendan Hansen, Ian Crocker, Mark Gangloff (LEGEND!), Katie Hoff, Christine Magnuson (amazing fly!!), and Peter Vanderkaay.

But not just the Americans, people! I support others as well! Stephanie Rice and Libby Trickett from Australia. Inge Dekker from the Netherlands and Kirsty Coventry from Zimbabwe, and Ioannis Kokkodis from Greece.

*sigh*

Yeah, and that's about all I watch on a strictly obsessive basis. I haven't gotten into the rest, really - just focusing on Phelps and trying not to startle my neighbors from screaming (minus the cursing every other word...) "GO GO GO GO YES YES YES YES GO GO GO! TOUCH THE WALL, GET IN THERE, GO ON! YOU'RE BREASTSTROKE IS SLOW, PUSH ON THE FLY - GO GO GO GO GO!!"

:lyn:

*cough*

Awwwwww, I was holding on hope for that top spot but those gymnasts still did well. Those other teams must've messed up pretty bad. :P And Taryn, I love watching Jonathan becoming the team captain even though he looks to be the youngest of them (is he? idk). His pep talks are pretty cute. ^_^

Gubby! :huggle: You would. But for serious that's exciting.

Um ... I have no connections to athletes. :lyn: Spring, the gymnast who does those amazing one-armed rotations on the high bar, went to school around here. So that's my claim to fame.

We CLEANED UP in swimming tonight.

*huggles Olympics ... and, I guess, Olympic fans* :D

WHAT ON EARTH DID YOU MEAN YOU CLEANED UP IN SWIMMING?

*waves Aussie flag*

AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE...OI OI OI! (that was our war cry for Syd 2000)

WE cleaned up in swimming. Set a few records...got a few golds...did anyone see Libby Trickett? (I dunno how to spell that...I know her better as Libby Lenton, lol)

That reminds me... I doubt anyone would have read it, but The Australian had an article about the Olympics...

Are you the person that assures your friends Australia's going to win because we have Libby Lenton and Libby Trickett?

...They're the same person. Just married. xD I loffled it.

I FINALLY MADE 1000 POSTS

WOOOOOHHHHOOOOOO!!!! He did it again. Last night, Mike (yup, we're on first name, nickname basis :P ) won. Again. He's incredible! And did anyone see the story they did on him? He has a really cute dog and eats ALOT. I was like, woah! :lyn: But like I said earlier, I'm really too competitive. So bad, I was even booing the other american at one point, even though from the start it was clear that Michael would win. :lyn:

Not anything against Aussies! Amazing swimmers for sure. But of the four final events last night (my last night ... your today?), we got three gold, two in world record time, and four other medals. How cool is that? That's what I mean by cleaning up. ^_^ Certainly not going one-two in every event, but clearly dominating overall with 15 of the 37 awarded in swimming so far (that was cool, with the bronze tie in men's backstroke. I wish they'd covered that more and talked less about Peirsol, who we expected to win anyway).

AND Mike hopped in the pool with about ten minutes of actual rest after his first gold of the morning (our evening :P Love that it's 12 hours off exactly!) and set an Olympic record in the butterfly semis. He's so cool. B) But I do love how many records are being broken - I think 9 of the 12 events have had new world records? Very exciting. I'm happy for everyone who wins ... so ... world record for Lethal Jones is a good thing. :)

Oh, and who else loves that Natalie Caughlin likes things other than swimming? I thought it was really cool that she got into cooking and photography to give herself a different outlet, since so many athletes seem understandably obsessed with practicing. Peirsol too is pretty chill about swimming. I love that. ^_^

Yeah, when I saw that special bit on Natalie Coughlin, I was thinking how nice and well rounded it was that she was making super-cool meals that I can't pronounce :P She was so close to getting that gold last night, too. But when Couglin, Coventry and Rice are in line with each other to take home gold... I can't choose. And it's horrible to say, because you'd think I'd root for my country... :lyn: But I was like "GO ALL OF YOU GO!!!"

I think I broke David's ears on the phone. ^_^

Okay. Dude. For shiz. Phelps = Olympic God. Seriously. I mean. *fans self* Both of his finals swims last night were incredible. His 4x200 relay and the team he was on - they were indestructible last night. It was totally amazing super fantastically awesome. They were SO far ahead - and breaking the world record by 5 seconds!! Holy COW. Not to mention that 2nd, 3rd and 4th place would have broken the record too :lyn: That was so GOAGLSALGKJKS:GJGJ awesome!!

:jessi: :jessi: :jessi: :jessi: :jessi: :jessi: :jessi: :jessi: :jessi: :jessi: :jessi:

Poor Katie Hoff though. :( That girl just couldn't catch a break last night.

And the girl's gymnastics - did you seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee how awesome Shawn Johnson was?! :D And Nastia Luikin on those uneven bars?!

Okay, Michael Phelps. :hearts: :hearts: How can you not love him? :hearts: Last night was wow. Incredible. In the 4x200, he just was... awesome. He put the US in front, and then as each swimmer came, they just went further and further ahead and beat the world record with a new WR under 7 mins. Somewhere around 6:58. I was like OMG OMG OMG, cheering them on crazily. :lyn: Then before, when he did the 200 fly. He was like woah, and then I felt bad because his googles had been loose and water was in them while he was racing!! :huggle: He wanted to get a better time, but because of the googles, he didn't reach his time. He still did amazing though!!

Gymnastics. I should say something about it. One of my friends is actually cousins with one of the gymnasts in the US, so I was cheering her on last night. *woohoo* Let's see if you can guess which gymnast. :P

Shawn Johnson was wow. She was in every event and only made one mistake during floor. One mistake!! Wow. Nastia Luikin was so great on the uneven bars. Just watching her, you're transfixed to the screen, cheering her on even if you aren't in the US. I feel incredibly bad for Alicia Sacramone. She really could do so much better and I just felt tears go to my eyes when she fell off the beam and then when she fell on floor. I just felt so bad for her, after not being able to go to last years olympics and then doing not so great this year. She put all the fault of her team not recieving gold on herself, and though her mistakes didn't help, she shouldn't put all the blame on herself. I thought no gymnast on the US did good on floor. They each made at least one mistake.

Now, I don't feel like talking about a sad subject, let's move onto Michael Phelps again. ^_^ HE DID IT! HE DID IT!! HE DID IT!!! HE DID IT!!!!!!!! :hearts: :hearts: :hearts: :hearts: :hearts: :hearts: He has made history!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :hearts:

Firstly, I just want to say that Michael Phelps is freaking unbelievable. Like my dentist said when he was putting in my filling, "The race is over as soon as he hits the water".

On the other hand, I want to lament Canada's lack of medals ... still. I was hoping to get some in the swimming last night, but nope.

And wow, the women's gymnastics. Johnson was very impressive (I loved watching her on the beam), though like Cassie, I couldn't help but feel bad for Sacramone. My sister said, just before she got up to do the beam, "I just want to see someone wipe out" (we're not a sensitive bunch of people), and then after she fell, she said, "I wanted to see someone fall, but now I just feel really bad for her." The Chinese gymnasts were amazing as well, though.

INTJ ftw

That was probably the worst race to watch. :P With the close relay, I was like, at least it won't be entirely his fault if they lose - and then Lezak came in and was amazing. But with this one I was like nooooooo :o ooooo! And then it was so close and so amazing. Ahaha, I was kind of falling asleep during the Spitz-Phelps interview but I did hear Mike start answering Mark's question and I had to laugh at that. He looked pretty natural with the headset on - maybe he'll become a commentator one day? :elena78: Voice isn't quite as clear as it should be for that, though. And of course Dara won her semi with amazing sportsmanship, no surprise there. I loved how she was chatting with the much younger Cate Campbell so naturally. Oh, and I loved seeing GB make some noise with Adlington! Srsly, they'd better step it up for London. :P

WHOA-EM-GEE, why have we not talked about Nastia yet? I think I was most impressed by her beam routine in the all-around final, but seriously, she stuck three out of four landings! And she was so graceful. Shawn was decent but I'd have been outraged if she beat Nastia with all of those stuck landings and amazing routines. That vault was near perfection! I was of course disappointed with no American medals in the men's final, but I was excited for that French guy coming out of nowhere for the bronze. I wish they'd shown more coverage of him. <_<

I'm sad it's over. :( I'm not a big track fan, so I guess I'll just get maximum enjoyment out of the gymnastics event finals from here on out.
