Okay. I'm like totally psyched right now, so let me start from the beginning. I had never written anything before when I started writing fan fiction, so naturally my first stab at it was utter crap that not only makes me want to barf, but would make anyone reading it fear for my sanity. I kid you not. You can't even imagine.... :eww: So the first story I wrote was an HP fanfic, and I had just turned 14. Like I said, I'd never written anything before. I actually finished it and it ended up being 25,238 words. Since then, I've had trouble finishing stories. As the years progressed I got better as a writer, and more picky as well. I never wrote anything unless I thought the plot was worthy enough, and I tended to write off beat stories about obscure characters because somehow I got it into my head that that was the mark of good writing. You know, exploring stuff that other people hadn't and whatever. But then I ran into a little problem. I couldn't write chaptered fics, or even OF. So for a long time I just wrote one-shots when the inspiration struck and all of my feeble attempts at chaptered were eventually abandoned, never having gotten very far. So then back in June or July, this year, I got totally fed up. I couldn't take it anymore, it was a curse! I'd never gotten past 25 thousand words and I'd never completed a story that wasn't a one-shot. So I was like, screw it, I'm writing something mainstream and cliche. I don't care what anyone thinks of it and I'm going to enjoy myself. Who cares if it's been done before? GUESS WHAT? Last night I was writing my cliche Dramione and I got to 25,268 words. And it's still going strong, no end in sight. SUCCESS! The curse has finally been broken! You're probably thinking, "25 thousand? Um, that's not that much." To me it is, and I couldn't be any happier right now. :D So in order to make this an interesting topic, I'm wondering: what road-blocks have you overcome? What obstacles stood in your way, or what goals do you have? |

OMG Chelsea, I'm so proud of you! :elena78: I remember once I was telling Andy that I was reading/reviewing a new story by you, and she was like, "Chelsea has a new story?" So even though I only read the first chapter of your Dramione (and will read more! I promise!), I'm so, so ecstatic that you got that far. Really, for authors with story-commitment issues (like me), this is such an inspiration. I have gotten past 25k in fanfic before, for Sun, but seeing as how I really don't like it right now, I don't think it counts :P Also, I haven't completed anything over four chapters. And that was three years ago. However, to make this kind of celebratory, I AM close to finishing a chaptered fic. It's my Astoria story, which I started in April and have four chapters completed. I only have 2/3 of the fifth chapter to go before I'm done. It will be my longest completed fic ever. I'm so excited for it! Except... the fifth chapter isn't coming. I don't know why. I know exactly what I'll be doing in it, but somehow, the words just aren't coming to me, and that makes me scared. But never fear, I know it'll work out. Soon. Ish. My goal right now is to finish Snow Red (said Astoria story). Even if I haven't worked on it in a few weeks, I want to, especially since it's gotten such great reviews and even a Dobby nomination (ILY, Susan :hearts: ). Other than that, I'm trying to at least work on other WIPs. And, you know, not kill myself trying. ... God, I suck at this, don't I? :lyn: |

OMG your reviews, as I said, made my day. It makes the success of breaking the curse that much sweeter. I'm so glad that it's an inspiration - I wish I could help everyone get past their roadblocks! As for you, my dear, I am incredibly proud! A Dobby nomination is fantastic! Honestly, I'm really really happy for you because your story is great and I'll for sure be reviewing every chapter (and I'm already looking forward to the last one!) On a completely random note: when you say "said Astoria story" I can't help but have mixed emotions. See, in my English class freshman year, we had to write introductions for thesis essays on the board and I used the word "said" in place of "aforementioned" and the teacher AND the co-teacher were like wha?? You mean "sad"? I was like wtf you're an English teacher, I know I didn't make up the use of that word. :P |

Your reviews made my day. But this made my night. :lyn: :lyn: :lyn: :lyn: Seriously, yes, your achievment is an inspiration. I really wish I could finish a WIP, of any length, really. Otherwise, what's to become of my novelist dream? :( I think part of the problem is that I lose focus way too quickly, or focus on the wrong thing. The one thing that fanfic has altered about my OF writing is that now, romance is half the fun of my stories. So then my OF ends up as "blah blah blah someone dies whodunnit blah blah blah oh noez, she's dead too, yadda yadda yadda, THEY'RE TOGETHER! and now climax." And that's a problem, because there's only so far I can go with just romance. So my issue now is to focus on plot - action-y, character-y, plot. With romance much farther down on the priority list. |
