The World In essence, the world in which the peoples live in did not give a name to their realm in question, merely referring to it as ‘The World’ or ‘The Realm’. Outsiders call it the ‘Center Plane’, for every other realm in existence surrounds it and is attached to it somehow in the great scheme of things. It contains two continents: Tesher and Audril. The larger of the two, Tesher, is shaped like a deformed hourglass and lies to the west; the center caves in slightly but smoothly, whiles the north and south are stretched out. The Maiden Isles, the largest cluster of islands in the Realm, lies just to the west of Tesher and is the home of the Aquan Empire. The north of the continent is primarily covered with the icy forests of the aptly named ‘Chilled Wood’. Few sentient species aside from the Wood Elves of Meldeneth live within there, and even then, the inhabitants use magical crystals to provoke an aura of magic around their territories to change the climate to something more moderate around their larger cities. Along the east facing Audril lays the Windstilt Mountains, where the Dwarven and Gnomish nations reside. The former rest to the northern chain, while the latter rests closer to the south. Great cities are etched along the face of some of these mountains, but most rest within or along the base of the great peaks. The very south holds the Dry Plains, separated into green pastures and the even drier Deserts. The Plains are inhabited by wild men and Goblinoids primarily, and some of the Steadhill colonies reside along the borders of these wild lands. Finally, along the center, a set of forested plains holds the capital and major cities of the Steadhill Kingdom. The largest portion of the continent, it also holds the Deep Marshes, where some of the more dangerous humanoid reside. Audril, however, is a much less explored and exotic land. The Kingdom of Uma lays claim around the western half of the continent, but the eastern portion is fair game for more hardy adventurers and travelers. The central portion upon which Uma lies is misty lowland, titled ‘The Sound’, is filled with deciduous forests broken up by grassy plains. The area receives a lot of precipitation, and the climate is unstable: the summer is hot and groggy, while winter is harsh and chilled. The lower portion of the kingdom is rugged and dry – a foil for its misty counterpart, and is typically where most of the larger cities lay due to the rivers that run south into the area. In fact, it is considered to be one of the most industrialized areas in the World. The north portion of the continent – including those controlled by Uma – contains the coldest climate in the Realm, aptly named the Frozen Plains. A long, rolling tundra, glaciers aren’t an uncommon sight, particularly along the northernmost reaches. Only the most powerful of individuals come here, for creatures of myth and legend are said to reside here. The large Audril Jungle can be found along the southeast portion of the continent, but little is known other than the fact that exotic species are said to live there. Between that and the tundra, a shallow, burning canyon expels black smoke from the continuous volcanic activity occurring there. Magical forces are said to be active within the Black Ring from some of the hardier travelers that made it back alive, though this can be put into speculation. Finally, the southern-easternmost portion of the continent, titled the Twilight, is unknown to everyone and anyone within the Realm. Surrounded by the foreboding Deathspine Mountains, anyone who has attempted to climb or tunnel through to get in have failed, paying with their lives. Those who attempted teleportation were never seen again. Aside from the two continents, several islands surround them harboring their own climates, creatures, and secrets. The largest of these chains is the Maiden Isles, home of the seafaring Aquan Empire. The islands vary from one to the other, but their climates are typically wet and tropical. The largest of the islands, Topi, contains their capital city and most established port, and the chain in question has been a spot of travel for many an adventurer to explore the unknown.T |
