Spore. Yes, I have to make a big deal out of (possibly) the greatest game of all time. We now enter the two-week boundaries of the release of (possibly) the most anticipated game of all time. We've been expecting it for.. How long? Let's see, Spore was presented as far back as E3:2005.. Anyways, it's been on our minds for a while now, and, stealing the slogan of StarCraft 2, "Hell, it's about time." For those of you who have been spending the last few years on a deserted island, Spore is a sandbox-type game from the mind of Will Wright in which you create your own species and conquer anything from ponds to planets. The first "level" of the game stars your creation of a microscopic creature in a pond. You must navigate the treacherous waters and avoid enemies with plenty of accessories which they can use against you. You must gather evolution points by absorbing enemy organisms. Using these points, you can add parts to your creature to help your creation in its survival. This level has come a long way in development, as you can tell from these pics. E3:2005 ![]() 2008 ![]() Talk about evolution. Next, if you overcome the challenges of the Pond, you'll evolve into the next stage, the Tribal stage, and are introduced to the Creature Creator, which you should all be familiar with by this level in the spore hype. In this stage, your species develops a commune of sorts. You help them develop and gain evolution points to help them along. In addition, the village also develops and before you know it, you're off to another stage in the spore universe. ![]() The more your civilization grows, the more the environment opens to you. After your species builds a flourishing city, you're up for another challenge. Take over other tribes. Once again, you use your species to conquer, gaining evolution points and developing your civilization. ![]() After progressively conquering a planet, your civilization develops the technology to travel through space. This opens even more options, as to how you overtake other tribes or civilizations. Now you can take them on in space, on the ground, anywhere. You could find a primitive species and convert them to a religion in which your species is god, or just destroy their planet to make way for an interstellar highway Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy style. It's your world, you do what you want. ![]() Spore release date is September 7th. I trust everyone here has been hit by the Spore hype, right? If not, I pity those who do not see the release of Spore as an important date in gaming history. Discuss. |

Whoa, I didn't know it was so close to the release of this game. I've been awaiting its release for about three years, and now it's (hopefully) being put out in the market. I love the concept. I just hope that my PC can handle the game. [Prays.] Anyways, once it's released, and one of you all buy it, be sure to share your experience with the rest of the class. I'm anxious to know if this "revolutionary" game does what the people say it probably will. |

Hah! With the exception of Me, You, and Grunt, no one really cares that much for Spore around here. So sad. |

Ugh... I was excited about this game at first, but now.... Kids just make penis monsters... It's stupid. I'm not going to buy it, it seems too much of a kids game for the perverted. |

Anywho.. The first Review post! Having recently played Spore all the way through, I can commence with the review!!! Since there's really a few games within the game, I'll be rating the stages instead.. just another innovation made here at Spore central... LEVEL: Tide Pool Rating: 7/10 The Tide Pool does exactly what it was designed to do. It gave an introduction to the creature creator, it helped you devise a mental image of the food web, and how you stood in it. It also told you one thing in particular. There's always another creature bigger. It brought a form of challenge, unless if you're one of those jerks who play games on easy just to beat it in a quick time. You start out as either an herbivore or a carnivore. Depending on your eating habits, you eat either bits of meat floating around or bits of green that look like veggies. After a while of eating, (if you're on medium or easy) your camera will move to a big cell chomping down on a little cell with spikes, leaving behind bits of meat and a little shield with a spike on it.The words at the bottom of your screen will say how creatures or meteor bits are the key to unlocking more parts, yadda yadda, yadda, swim over the shield to be able to use the part. After collecting the part, you eat food some more, growing in size, until it introduces you to the 'call mate' button. This button makes your creature call for a mate. After pressing the button, you'll have to follow the sound of your mate until you find him/her at which point the two creatures do a little dance, make a little love, and drop off an egg. The camera zooms in on the egg and fades out. As it fades back in, you are shown the cell creator. (Continued later, gotta go) |

(Continuing...) The cell creator is a lot like the creature creator, except it only shows the overhead (2D) view of your cell. You use the DNA you have been collecting to buy parts to add onto your cell. So you add, say, a spike. This protects you from other cells when they try to attack you in a spiked area. Or you could add a tentacle, which makes your creature swim faster. Or you could add another mouth, like a filter(Herbivore) or a chomper(carnivore). You get the ability to add an omnivore mouth, a proboscis later. Just as you can add parts and lose DNA, you can take away parts and get that DNA back. After adding and removing parts, you name your creature and click "accept". After creating your cell, you continue challenging the big wide world of cells until the evolution bar at the bottom of your screen fills, at which point you are allowed to click the button which takes you on to the creature stage at any time, or you could stay in the tide pool for as long as you wish. Thus completing my review and overview of the Tide Pool Stage on Spore. |

mhm. I suppose I should be starting a review of the creature stage now... LEVEL:Creature Level (AKA dry land) Rating:9/10 (EPIC!!) After clicking the button which takes you to dry land, you are shown a dummed-down version of the creature creator (Now 3D!). You can now add legs, but no arms, and the parts from the cell stage. I usually just get rid of the parts from the cell stage for the DNA. You could do whatever. It's pretty sweet-looking to just line the spikes up along your creature's back, though.. After finishing up on the new land-lubber creature you have, the creature creator menus fade out and your legged cretin swims up out of view. You are then shown an overhead view of the shore, and your creature swimming to it. As it gets closer, it turns back and calls to its buddies that it's time to get to land.. or whatever (Their language currently consists of squeaks). You all swim up on shore and establish a nest a little past the shore. The nest is where all of the creatures of your kind will stay. You can return here to heal. After running around a bit, you come across other creatures. These creatures were all built like your creature and may just be a creature you made in the creator. Regardless, you can either become social or vicious with this species. If you choose to socialize with this species, by using the green actions button on the bottom of the screen, for violence, you use the red actions button. After initializing a friendly basis with this species, or attacking them, you will be introduced to a new quest-type goal. To either eradicate (Kill a certain number of this species) or ally (Impress a certain number by using social skills.) for a reward of DNA. After collecting your favored amount of DNA, you can call a mate back at your nest. You'll have to get there, though(This isn't oblivion, guys don't just jump across the map). After making love to your mate (Just as the cells did, dancing) you lay an egg and enter the now fully grown creature creator. But wait! You're missing parts! You're informed that you can retrieve more parts for the creature creator by killing more (or finding skeletons, if you want to be more of a non-violent race). But you can still add arms now, and any other stuff you had unlocked before you entered the creature creator. So you get that stuff done, and you finish up on your creature. Your nest-mates gather around as your egg starts to crack open, and WHAM! The egg explodes. Your mother comes closer to you and looks you over. She shows you your new abilities, and you press the corresponding buttons with those abilities to use them. After finishing up, you're enveloped in a green light and you grow to twice your baby height. You are now a full-grown adult of your species. You continue collecting DNA and unlocking parts until one day... (this seems like a good spot to stop at for a little bit. Continued later.) |

...your species migrates once or twice.... Then settle down to make a tribe! Just to keep the producers of Spore from suing me or something, I'll rate the next few levels and be done with it. Tribal Level: 6/10, more of a race to get to civilization than a level. either conquer or befriend nearby tribes. Tribal attire builder introduced. No more evolution. Civilization level: 9/10, build land, air, and sea vehicles to conquer or establish trade with other cities and eventually the entire planet. Vehicle and Building creator introduced. Space Level: 9.5/10, conquer or buy star systems, mess with planets to make them habitable and explore the depths of space. Totally free-form! Spaceship creator introduced. Average rating: 8.1/10 |
