Note: Question at the bottom.

Shit.
It IS the 'Verbal Tofu' of English. It can be used in almost any situation ranging from description to shock to complaint. A short list of the uses might be:
Hot as shit.
Cold as ".
Tastes like ".
Smells like ".
That's some cool "!
Oh "!
What is that "?
You dumb-"!

The list goes on and on. Daily, I must hear four swears in at least every other sentence if not more often than that. Why, of all things, are swear words considered taboo? They are used in movies, books, in every form of media. The only thing a swear can do is express an emotion, and I can't see why it's such a horrible thing to say. Any opinions on the matter as to whether swears and the like be censored or to un-censor them from television ect.?

Fuck. It can represent a lot more than Shit, too.

Damn(ed), Heck, Hell, Uber, Mom, Crap and Cats can also be used in varying ranges of situation as "verbal tofu", as you say.

Québec French has a few of those, too -- in fact, they're widespread throughout most languages. Some examples: Caliss, Criss, Tabarnak, Osti, Marde, Caca.

As to why they're censored: Religion. Any other reason is a derivative explanation from someone who was religious and accepted the idea because of religion to start with and was trying to explain it away.

As to whether or not they should be: Why the fuck would we censor them? Someone find me a valid, logical reason why those words in particular cause psychological or physical harm to a child or person, and I may reconsider.

Why should be censor them?
You might . . . you know, offend someone.

That's the problem with Western culture today. So many people are so bent on sugar-coating or censoring everything that could be considered offensive by someone. People need to grow some thicker skin.

Maybe we should start filing lawsuits because people are getting offended too much, instead of the other way around.

I agree, why the fuck should we censor every little thing someone might find offensive?

Why? because the government's filled with dumb-fucks who think that votes are more important than fucking common sense and rationality. Honestly, there is no harm from saying cuss words or similar 'taboo' words. Overbearing, hypocratic religion and dumb-fuck lawmakers are the source of the problem. Yes, if anyone here is religious, I kow I'm going to Hell, and I'm going to like it.

Now, I never said 'Swear to make a sailor blush' in my first post, but I get what you all are saying. I happen to find in no way does any swear word bring offense to any particular religion, unless paired with a deity/demigod/prophet (i.e. Jesus *Assorted swear/insult* Christ!)

I understand that. I just cuss a lot, though not that much on the internet, only really when i'm aggravated with something (IE religion), or can't think of a better word. Well, religious people happen to be the majority of people who tell me to stop cussing, so for me it's true, no matter what the context.

Are 'bad words' silly?

Yeah. They're silly. People like to make a lot of things seem either a lot better or a lot worse than they really are (IE exaggerate).

'Bad words' probably came about not due to religion, but simple etiquette. 'Shit', meaning 'poop' or 'dung' in its original context, is taboo; it's unclean, so it's not appropriate to be said. Parents don't want their children running around and looking like jackass by yelling words that, when the image is played through the listener's mind, make them gag.

If I ran around yelling 'I just ate a fried camel dick', people wouldn't take me seriously; they'd think I was an idiot, and call me offensive. Even if dick wasn't a bad word, it would still be 'inappropriate'.

I hope you guys get what I'm saying, I'm too tired to go into too much detail.

I understand. However, people often cross the line regarding what they should or should not be offended about.

Gonna avoid a long post here, so I'll just say this: Everything needs to be taken in moderation. I do think that it's rediculous if people take offense or go nuts if you spout out "fuck" or somesuch (unless it's referring to another person in the room with that very negative connotation). Likewise, if you continue sputtering off a bunch of taboos like that like a broken recorder, it just shows that you really have a violent temper, or you just lack the cognitive ability to say something else or the willpower to hold your tongue. Besides, it can get really annoying after awhile.

But that's just my take on it. I certainly don't believe that, if you're joking around with a friend, you shouldn't be hushed and reprimanded for that reason. :\
