"Spectre..." That's a suitable name for this mutated strain of the Bundibugyo ebolavirus. It is still unclear on how the mutation became appearent. Maybe it was a failed attempt to develop a cure for this particular strain. Maybe it was deliberately crossed with other diseases to make a superior bioweapon...

"Spectre" starts off with no initial symptoms, until two hours have passed. This is the ending of the incubation phase, and more visible symptoms appear, such as coughing, sneezing, and fatigue. This phase lasts for five hours, then it suddenly ends. The sudden end of symptoms cause the victim to think that it has passed on, but this is not the case. Instead, from that point until 24 hours from infection, the virus slowly spreads throughout the body, killing the body's defences. During this time, it moves towards the brain, damaging nerve cells to cause intense pain. This will often drive the victim to the point of insanity, forcing them to lose all control and attacking everyone around them. It is at this point where they will be killed, either by survivors, or by the virus killing off massive amounts of brain cells. After 30 hours have passed from point of infection, the body breaks down, further spreading the virus via scavengers and/or via airborne aerosol of mucus droplets.

However, there are accounts of a select few infected receiving certain mutations, causing them to become more dangerous or becoming something known as a "Reaver."
