I know there is another topic on this but this is a bit more political. USA is donating a lot of money and GWB is helping out as much as possible. I don't know about Canada but I heard charities are donating a lot as well. but how can we prepare for another earthquake if 3rd world couintries don't have that type of equipment? How can USA prepare for an earthquake? Even other populated places? Do you think First World Countries should put more emphasis in security then in other areas? |

Nothing can ever be done to prevent an earthquake. The best people can do is be prepared for one. I live in a highly susceptable earthquake zone (I've been in numerous earthquakes) and we take many precautions. All new buildings are built under strict codes, all public buildings such as schools, have all had massive renovations done in terms of seismic upgrades. We have earthquake drills at school, at home most people are supposed to have an emergency preparedness kit....etc. In third world countries it's simply a lack of money. Buildings are old and made of cheap material, and the govt. simply can't afford to upgrade them. Just look at the earthquake in Bam, Iran exactly one year ago. The quake was only a 6.6, yet the city was leveled and 30,000 people died. The Seattle earthquake a few years back was 6.1 yet no one died and there wasn't much damage. |

yea it has to do with economic issues that country has. Third world countries don't have any technology and it's up to first world countries to help them out. |

Yea countries like USA should stop putting so much money in teh war and actually think of it's civilians. Enough of this terrorism crap because it doesn't seem like that anymore. it's just domination and no one is doing anything about it except those civilians who defy them and die. First world countries should put less effort in military and more effort in security because it's their own citizens that are more important. The safety of the people come first. You may need military for that but military can't stop natural disasters. |

Japan is doing good right now. They've planned to donate 500 million dollars to the disaster making the country the top donater. USA is second with 350 million. And one of the wealthiest countries, Saudia Arabia is giving 10 million.. . |

Wow..150 000 dead and still rising. Definitley 1st world countries need to help them out, if the countries affected (Thailand, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka) cant afford to clean up, someone needs to give them money or help out, or the death toll will skyrocket due to disease because of all the rot and garbage. Disease and Famine are already starting up. If a country is a world leader, it needs to step up and help out. |

yea I don't think an earthquake was that big. The last 9.0 I think was in the 1700's but correct me if i'm wrong. |

I will correct you then. There have been 5 magnitude 9 or higher earthquakes in the last 60 years alone. The highest, 9.5 in Chile, May 22, 1960 9.2, Prince William Sound, Alaska, March 28, 1964 9.1, Aleutian Islands, March 9, 1957 9.0, Kamchatka, Nov. 4, 1952 and the recent one of the coast of Sumatra was officially 9.0, though some scientists are saying it was 9.1. |
