If you add up the tallies, it comes out to Nintendo DS: 3, PSP: 3, Tie: 2, or an overall tie. But that doesn't really tell the whole story. If you look at the category winners, the PSP takes the system power, control and media categories while the Nintendo DS takes battery life, portability and load times.

So in theory, the Nintendo DS is a better portable system but the PSP is the better all-around system. This seems like a fair enough assessment and the final word we'll stick with.

'd just like to raise something that I've been thinking about recently and which maybe a few more of your readers should.

The gaming industry seems very unique to me in that many gaming consumers seem to believe that the industry would benefit from one company having a monopoly. It's understandable that an individual will have a preference for one product over another, but it's rare to see people love a product so much that they find the very existence of another product and it's manufacturer repulsive.

I'm very pleased that your DS vs. PSP ended in a tie. The fact that people get so emotional about the result is not surprising, but a little disturbing. I own a DS and I have not intention of owning a PSP. However, I'm more than happy to admit that the PSP is a great system and also that the DS has many flaws. I'm happy with my choice but I also understand why someone would make a different choice.

Nobody benefited from Nintendo dominating the hand-held market and nobody would benefit from Sony doing the same. Competition is great for everyone. The PSP will be better because of the DS and vice-versa. I even remember reading an interview with a Nintendo executive stating that they were pleased to see Sony enter the portable gaming market as it would cause the market to grow and in turn benefit both companies.

When I read letters where people pray for the fall of Nintendo or Microsoft or whomever I often wonder if these people feel the same about the manufacturers of other consumer products they own. If they drive a Honda do they pray for the day that Ford files for bankruptcy because this will somehow make their Honda better? In the end comparing the PSP and DS is like comparing a Porsche Boxter to a Hummer. The better will be in the eye of the beholder.

I'd hope that none of the long-running, and good companies fall. That would suck.
