Religion just seems like something that was created to help us cope with the terrors of the world. When religion was first created we were living in the wild, where we died from nearly everything. Life was terrible and we were positive that there had to be some higher power torturing us. Which led to the whole thing that we need to do the deity's will or suffer some terrible fate. The last time religion was needed in the US was during slavery, where the slaves used it for inspiration. Today we dont have that kind of stuff (well almost since there still is slavery), life is so bland. Why are we praying? Do we even know. Most people I know who go to any church go out of habit. Preachers, priests alike recite the same speeches over and over about how if we turn our back on whichever god he or she will wreak havoc upon us. The only countries that truly use their religions are poor nations. We just go to our places of worship out of habit. They do it in search of hope. We pretty them up with flat screen TV's and awesome sound systems. All of this leads me to the questions Does religion have a purpose anymore? If so what purpose does it serve? All religion seems to do today is seperate us for no apparent reason. |

Have you been to church, mass, temple, synagogue, etc, lately? If you had, you should understand why there's still a purpose. Religions are more than just comforting tools, they bring people closer to the God in charge of their destinies. Is there a purpose for religions still? Most certainly. Always has, and always will have a purpose, especially to those who follow one. |

Very well said, Shiryou. In the very least it gives people a definitive reason to live. It is also as Karl Marx said, "an opiate for the masses." |

fine, i felt lazy...k wel religion will always have a purpose becasue there will always be things that mankind will nvr be able to explain, which is where religion comes into play explaining everything for us that we can't. a good example that is used excessivley is the creation story. Will we evr find out how the earth, and the rest of the universe came into existance? no, none of us were there, so how would we? thats why religion is necessary. Its also explains to us what happens to us after we die for us, because its not like any of us have come back to tell us what dieing feels like or what happens to us afterwords. did i elaborate enough?? |

Suck a fat one, Sylphy. And jumanjifro, no you didn't! Technically, all things can be explained by science and there are proofs and such for the creation story, but no one can be sure, so where science falls short, faith must fall into place. People are working on this, and I'm sure they'll find some scientific way to explain it but this scientific method can be deferred back to a creation story with it's ties and similarities to them. |

I myself am not religous but hey i don't know if there is a god I respect that some people feel that there is and I'm not sure (agnostic to all you who wan't to use the posh word) so I don't go out mass murdering people because theres nothing after death but I'm not a saint so I do stuff wrong I rekon youre going to get loads of different answers on this religous people will say it does and non religous people won;t |
