Would someone care to explain the differences to me? They all sound the same, all pessimistic, which is why I can see how they're so appealing to some.

Marxism is a modified form of communism, and communism is a type of socialism. The idea of communism existed long before Marx was even born.
In short, Communism is classless and everything is owned by everybody.
Unfortunately, the communist party running various countries such as Laos, Vietnam, China, and the former Soviet Union have never actually implemented communism, and have created their own "modified" form of it. It simply doesn't work in the world we live in.

If you want an historicaly analysis, I can't help you. But for current, practical terms, just realize that there are only two party platforms; collectivist, where everyone pays together and helps one another and the government enforces this with the threat of law, and individualist, where people are only protected to the extent of their basic rights and are not entitled to anything further, where help is voluntary.

As for the left side of things, there exist only two active forms; leninism, which advocates world-wide collectvism, through war, revolution, and bloodshed, and Fabianism, which advocates the same goals, but through gradual subversion.

marxist leninist (comunist) party of canada, yes they are an actuall party. nyways the only difference between them that i can see, is them all being what each of them view as the perfect communist utopia, which only works in theory. this is because people will nvr find any reason to work their fare share in a communist society because they get paid regardless. this is why there is no hope for humanity to reach the perfect/ideal communist system that actuallly works in practice because most normal, everyday people have no concept of what the principals of equality and fairness. Although most people believe them to be the same they aren't. the definition of fair is no equal treatment but treating people according to their needs. Equallity is teating everyone exactly the same.
