Steve Yzerman announced his retirement today at a news conference in Detroit.

Yzerman had been Detroit's captain since 1986, making him the longest-serving captain in league history. He led the Wings to 15 consecutive playoff appearances and won three Stanley Cups with Detroit.

Yzerman, 41, had 14 goals and 20 assists in 61 games last year, but struggled with injuries.

This really sucks because Yzerman is one of my favourite players. I was hoping he would come back for one more season but i'm not surprised he decided not to.

I don't understand why he'd retire. He still has it and he's still a great hockey player.

He might, but he's really aging now. He's been on the ice for quite some time, and perhaps he thinks he's ready to retire.

I guess. He's an amazing hockey player though, one of my favorites.

that was the worst poem ever

anyway he's a great hockey player and he has my respect. One of those quiet nice guys in the NHL who has a lot of leadership

Wow..... it's just Steve Yzerman. You don't need to cry about him. Don't worry though no matter how good he is/was you can always watch someone better play and that person is Mike Modano.

Yzerman was one of the best players in the NHL.
