Hmm, overall question? Probably slowly dropping. Look at how many sequel-ish type of games that have come out. That's just about all you really see these days. But some are quite fun and it doesn't matter if they're like number five or six in the series (or even going to be #12 if we look at FF). We just have to hope more designers are going to put out original games to give a little bit of fresh air in the market. And with the next gens coming out, I think it'll be soon. Hopefully. |

The golden age of gaming has gone. Right now the quality is slowly dropping. Back in the day, when a new game came out everyone would play it and love it. During the late era of PSX/N64, developers didn't really care about the gameplay of games but focused on graphics. I think thats why the quality is dropping. The PS2/X box/GC did have some of its great games but they weren't awe inspiring as the SNES/Genesis games. They didnt have that gameplay that made you want to come back for more. Instead they emphasized on amazing graphics trying to entice new gamers into the market. But I somewhat agree that the quality is beginning to climb. It looks like developers realize this. Games like Shadow of the Collosus, Zelda, Metroid Prime, ICO, Ninja Gaiden are games that took gaming to a new level. Games can be played differently or looked upon at a whole new level. There are many other games I forgot to add but I find these ti be one of them. |

THe proof that I see that the gaming quality are slowing down is that many racing games, rpg, fps, sports, are all starting to become pretty similar. |

I really think that it depends on the system that we are talkin about. The 360 is having a helluva lot of original ideas being released onto the market in these up coming months. Gears of War, Haze, Mass Effect, and Lost Planet are all original ideas, along with Dead Rising and Prey. |

I would have to say that it is rising, however, I think most people would say that it is dropping for the following reasons: A) Nostalgia, already covered. B: I think as you age, games become less "fun." I can think of several NES games I played back in the day that were horrible games, but I had a lot of fun with them. Now, having graduated from college, I say "oh man what was I thinking." Lots of people are just happier the younger they are. (I still have lots of fun playing games now, but in a different way.) C) More information. Now we know about EVERY game that comes out. We are constantly bombarded with screens, promises of extras, and tibits of information. We know the release dates, updated to the minute. This is a problem because back in the old days when I went to Toy R Us to get games for my NES, I never knew what to expect. There could be a great game coming out that week that I never had heard of until I got there. I remember not even knowing that FF III had come out here in the States until the week it did. That would NEVER happen now. Thus, there was an element of surprise as to what I'd find. Not any more, now I know exactly what will be there, or should be there and am often disappointed when I hear something slips its shipping date. Additionally, all the promises of the developers are often broke, thus leading to games becoming more jaded. How much did really know about upcoming games or expect from them in the late 80s or earlier 90s? Not nearly as much as we do know. I'm not saying more information is bad or good, just having an impact on how we view games. I kind of miss the old word-of-mouth that was how I found out about games that were good or bad. |

Ya, I think that's probably a big reason why teh quality of games is dropping. It's because we know about them too much. |

I say dropping. While the technical aspects of games - size, graphics, sound quality, and the like - are obviously improving, games just don't seem as fun anymore. There are obvious exceptions. For instance, the handheld Castlevanias, Metroid Prime, and SSB:M, to name a few examples, have been as fun as the old games. As far as I'm concerned, the 16 bit era (SNES and Genesis) is the apex of gaming quality. A lot of games today feel like they're rushed to cash in on a trend, be it movie games or simply to become part of a fad. Not saying that this didn't happen in the old days, but the best old games felt better crafted. I enjoyed Super Metroid more than Metroid Prime. I liked Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island more than Yoshi's Story. I enjoyed Link to the Past more than OoT AND Wind Waker. I liked Chrono Trigger more than Chrono Cross. Is it nostalgia? Maybe for some, but not necessarily. For instance, I still pick up old-school games I never touched in their time and enjoyed them more than I've enjoyed many new-school games. |
Welcome to the good life

PS2 games are amazing in quality and are rising everyday. Many people who own Gamecube or X box says games are dropping because to be honest all of those games suck. Guys who own PS2's love their games and have a huge libryar to buy from. Also guys who play handhelds say games are decreasing cuz graphics are gay. Thats why PSP took handheld gaming out of the ghetto and games are getting better |
