Agree/Disagree: The more realistic graphics get..

Sure it was easy to kill an ingame character when they were low-res, pixelated messes that made high-pitched, realistic, recorded screams everytime you killed them. That was no problem, and it was even funny. But now it's getting different.

The more disturbing it gets when you're killing someone in-game,

The more they can mimick lifelike animations and behvaior, and perfectly imitate the sounds people make when dying. Whent hey get all the lighting and shadows and lifelessness,

When they get the ragdoll physics of a dead body down to each exact, realistic animation and the glazed eyes of a dead body...

The more disturbing it gets to watch games where people are being brutally killed.

This can be both good and bad for the industry. You can make war games and thriller games that really do tax the psychological limits of a gamer and really get them involved. At the same time, it can be very disturbing and traumatizing for those not ready, or even desensitize us to these events so that it happens in real life, we're out of touch with how we "should" feel. The Darkness being a godo example: while not quite there yet graphics wise, the animations were almsot spot on with the brutal killings, and it already hurts my head.

You agree or disagree?

It is a great thing, makes the game much more immersive. Try Counter strike 1.6, then try CS: Source. CS source has such great graphics and body physics and it's much easier to feel like you're actually killing the terrorists/counter terrorists.

It's a double-edged sword. Realistic graphics and animations makes some games what they are, specifically the war/shooter/thriller games as you mentioned. It's also showing off just how far we've come in technology that we get mimic these actions so precise and get things down to their exact detail. I mean, if you think about, that's why some video games have been made. The makers want to see just how close they get these games to real life actions and they're usually noticed.

However, many will look at these and say it's corrupting. That these games will influence people and have psychological effects. Well that may be true, it's usually not the case for everyone. These are reasons why we have M rated and, if ever needed, A rated games. The people who agree on these ratings must know that children could be or will be influenced by actions and/or images in the game.

I always have wondered why video games get so much more attention then movies do. You don't see that many children getting turned around not to see R rated movies, but they've started to enforce the M Rating more heavily in stores. That's just how I see it though. Personally, I'm not bothered by these realistic video games. I'm more disturbed by movies most of the time, since they're both meant to be like reality and they use real people.

When it gets too realistic, how will it be different for the real thing? Well you'll be killing pixels rather than hydrocarbons, but if you think about it, if you're used to the sight of death, the next time someone is killed in front of you, or the first time you kill someone for real, it will be like nothing.

That's one scary thought.

Graphics play a minimal part in what people do outside of games. Gameplay has a more of a role since the gamer gets the responsibility of controlling other people and kililng monsters/humans in game.

funny thing is, oblivion makes killng people seem fun :|

i do enjoy raggin a dead horse around a bit and slewing blood up the wall from its belly with my sword, i also enjoy cornering male lizardmen in small bedrooms on there

does it make me a strange killer?

I DO NOT KNOW

in my opinion, gfx are no completely necesary
only in horrorgames they are completely necesary since they otherwise couldnt imerse you (yeah i knwo sound allso counts alot)

kickass gfx are allways a plus

physics is a complete different topic, they are required in any game imo ^^

i really do believe good graphics and a good game engine with good physics is a must in a good game.

Oblivion as an example: I can't imagine Oblivion being as fun as it is without its amazing graphics, physics, and lighting engines. All these things put together make the gameplay so realistic and fun.

I tried playing Morrowind a week ago. It doesnt have a physics engine nor a good lighting system. Characters don't even have free body movement or realistic blood. I mean sure you can kill lots of people still but its no where near as fun as in oblivion.

Same with counter-strike source vs 1.6. The rag-doll effect of the bodies makes killing others that much better, especially in low-grav environemtns :P

I mean we can't do most things in real life, thats y games were made, to help us escape. And without the good graphics, "realistic" gameplay engines and what not, its kinda hard to do that anymore.

I mean there are other cases too where graphics and stuff arent that important, it all depends on the genre tho.

agree...

The is a certian extent to were they should go IMO. I think games such as gears of war go way over the edge. i mean hell, these games could be breeding the next generation of serial killers. I think as long as they dont get too... real life... they'll be fine but can you imagine that 9 year olds play gears of war? what is that exposing them to? that cutting someone to peices with a chainsaw is ok and funny?

It depends upon how it's presented. I will say that the trailer for Bioshock that featured a part where the main character was attacked by a big daddy and had a spinning drill shoved into his hand made me both want to look away from the screen and less excited about the game. I'll probably still play the game but the screaming and the realism of the graphics combined with the dystopic setting really made that trailer do almost the exact opposite of what it's supposed to do (make me want to play the game).

man i want to play the game because of that

because of how distubring and life-like it is

i want to feel the rush of going through that kinda setting

again...cant be done in real life (99% of the time) so this is a great oppurtunity to experience it...and if it cant be done in real life...might as well not hold anything back in the game to make it as bad ass as possible
