I will always find FFVII to be the definitive game of the franchise. It really was one of the first games to focus a lot on story telling which is why people became attached to the characters. It's also the first game in my recollection that one of the main gaming characters dies in a dramatic way. That moment itself made Sephiroth one of the most hated and well known antagonists around. The game play was quite solid and the soundtrack was phenomenal. It was the total package for a FF game.

Looks like theres no love for FFXII. It was truly a love it or hate it game just solely on the game play itself.

FFXII emphasized way too much on storyline and character development. It started out pretty good but the story began to grow stale and fizzle out. The characters became non-existant and it turned into another "save the world" rpg.
