The other day I was pondering this question (mildly inspired by the shutdown of Megaupload the other month): How will the Internet be like in a decade? Some things we have nowadays on the net are just too good to be there for long. Free access to knowledge? Too awesome to be allowed. Maybe in the first years it managed to slip through. I strongly doubt they will allow it anymore. YouTube will go down at the hands of law enforcement agencies. And Wikipedia is too anarchic to exist in the current world without being restricted with things like Premium Wiki accounts. ![]() Expect Facebook to prosper, though! (as long as the information there can be used for ... the right reasons). |

I can't see YouTube being shut down without the current U.S Government being overthrown as a result. Wikipedia. Yeah I can see that. If NSG gets any crazier, I might start getting worried for NS

So, this morning I saw "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia" on DVD at 9.99 euros. Scary.

I don't think Wikipedia will disappear but they'll have to start selling memberships of some kind. They're like PBS, they have donation campaigns all the time and the "appeal letters" they post give this boo-hoo story almost shaming people into donating. This is what happens when you offer a "free" service. They all come to eat but leave without paying. Running servers and all that costs money. I can't see AOL around for too much longer. I don't see it serving a real purpose since they were intiially a "dial-up" IPS. MySpace is pretty much out of the picture. It's just dying a slow and painful death. Even its advertisers don't wnat to commit to anything long term. |

I disagree with YouTube. Google is a very powerful company and has lots of 'friends' in the US and UK governments. I can't see Yahoo being around in 10 years. I mean what do they even do anymore? They no longer have search, as their search is powered by Bing. Email? People use Gmail or Facebook these days. They should have allowed themselves to be bought by Microsoft when they had the chance. |
