"....Police are baffled with the reports that despite an entire room full of members of the exclusive Parisian club being robbed of their valuables, there are zero witnesses to the theft. This is the fourth such incident within the last month..." Paul listened to the radio news reports as he lay across the sofa. After a debriefing and follow up on the Venice operation he'd finally found time off to enjoy. For McLeod this entailed the removal of his tie and jacket, undoing at least two shirt buttons and relaxing with the radio. Taboo, his feline home companion, rested across his legs idly waving her tail around. Their home was a well kept penthouse flat, a large combined living room and kitchen, large window leading out to a balcony with the bedroom, office and bathroom behind their own doors. The BBC news report wrapped up before seaguing into a smooth Dean Martin number. The story on the robberies was interesting though, entire rooms full of theatre goers, social gatherings and the like being swept clean of cash, watches and jewelry with no clues whatsoever. Too bad it was a job for the police and not MI6. Paul would have enjoyed the mystery. Suddenly Taboo sat up twitching her ears. Only a few things got her interested enough to move when her and Paul were taking a lazy day. "What's wrong Tabs? Oh no. It's Eva isn't it?" Eva was Pauls neighbour in the same building. They had met when she'd returned Taboo to him, having found the cat sleeping in her bed (probably sneaking into the wrong flat after a day out). Seeing how well the two befriended each other Paul had offered the young girl the task of taking care of his cat when he was away on duty. It wasn't that Paul didn't like her, she had a sunny personality that made her good company, it was her insistence on finding out more about his job. When he'd came back from some business in the states she had presented a scrapbook she had started with a few newspaper clippings of events that had tied in with his location, criminal arrests, car chases and such. While he was responsible or present at these events he couldn't tell her the truth, that his job in international banking was cover for being White Knight, Agent of MI6. His denial didn't put her off any, she would pester him to tell her about his work, or to let her come with, or worse yet give her something for her journalism work. On the other hand maybe he'd be luckier today, maybe she'd just come to tell him about some new band she'd seen or suggest some new clothing style for him rather than his collection of suits. |

Eva hopped up the stairs in her apartment building. The elevator was too crowded to take and walking wasn’t too bad. She beamed with excitement as she carried her camera and a flyer with her. She had always wanted to go to a magic show, but going alone wasn’t fun. She was planning on going anywise, but when she was making her way home she happened to spot Paul’s car outside. He was actually home from work for a change, and now she could see about dragging him out with her. She reached her floor and made her way into her apartment her step mom was on the balcony enjoying the cool breeze. She smiled lightly as she ran to her room to pick up the key to Paul’s pent house and started to make her way back out. “Eva where you going this time?” her step mother called. Eva held up the flyer and waved it in the air. “Alright, but if Mr. McLeod doesn’t want to go don’t force him.” She nodded and made her way out of the apartment and toward Paul’s home. She unlocked the door and made her way into the apartment. She smiled seeing him relaxing for a change, but she was going to change that. She snatched up Teboo on her way to the chair and sat down. Beaming with excitement she leaned over and put the flyer down on the coffee table. “Can you go see this with me? I’ve never been, and I’ve always wanted to see a magic show and I don’t want to go alone.” She crossed her legs allowing her plad skirt to drape over her knees. With Teboo in her lap she knew she was going to have to de hair her white coat before she left, but she didn’t care. She scratched behind her ear as he relaxed and purred in her lap. “I’ve been debating on going, but now they pushed it they said tonight is going to be his last show and I really want to go,” she pleaded. "You've gone a whole minute without asking about what I was up to in Italy. I'm inclined to ask what the catch is?" Paul sat up, put down his paper and picked up the flyer. The painted image depicted a clown, a black clad magician, twin females brandising bows and a large turban wearing figure gazing at the reader with a serpent gaze. The text named them as The Carnival of Curiosity featuring the magician Fantastic Fernando, Melody and Harmony the death defying sisters, Chaotic Coco the clown and the hypnotist Mysterious Mesmero. Tonight only at the Showstopper theatre/restaurant due to the push forward in schedule like Eva had said. It did seem a decent piece of entertainment. In his youth Paul had been taught quite a few sleight of hand tricks that had proven useful, but he always enjoyed the flair and showmanship of stage magic. Maybe it would be a good plan, though he was expecting a call. "Okay. I'll take you. Taboo. Keep Eva pinned for a second, I have to check in at work." Taboo followed instruction and stood up on her back paws, using her front paws to push Eva into her seat. Of course it wasn't a real method of restraint, but it's effectiveness came from the fact that Eva wouldn't try to remove the cat until she wanted to move. Paul took a key from his pocket to unlock his office door, closing and relocking it behind him as he found the handset for the phone. Quickly dialing the MI6 contact number was automatic reflex at this point. The walls and door were thick enough to drown out most of the noise, but the converstion was still in code. "This is McLeod. I'm stepping out with a friend this evening. Showstopper restaurant. If anything comes up on the Golden account could you pass me a message there?" "Certainly Paul. Enjoy your night off." replied Penelope, the on duty operator. "If I were you though I'd have taken the extra few days in Venice. Beautiful city." "It wasn't the season for it. Too rainy." The casual talk was good for anyone listening in. With the office banter people would actually think it was a banking firm. "Shame. Have a good night then." "Night." He hung up and reentered the living room. "You can let her go now Tabs. Sorry about that but I do deal with a lot of confidential details, other peoples money. My boss would kill me if anyone overheard. So why don't we both get ready and I'll meet you at the car?" |

Eva beamed with excitement when Paul said he was going to take her to the show. She watched as he walked to his office. It was the only room in his pent house that she did not have any access. The window was possible but it would require a gifted person and rope to do that, and picking the lock wasn’t her cup of tea. She could barely pick the lock to her own filing cabinets in her room. It would require practice and maybe a request for Paul to teach her. She knew it might come in handy in the journalist field. She smiled a bit as she picked up her camera to take a picture, but paused as Taboo licked the lens. “Really . . . you could have just meowed or something.” Sighing a bit as she watched the kitty wagging her tail as if she was teasing her. She smiled a bit as she stroked her back and looked up as Paul returned from his office. “So many secrets hidden behind those doors, and so many mysterious trips. Can’t you just take a break from work without having to tell your spy buddies where you’re going all the time?” She patted Taboo on the head before standing up and retrieving her camera. Pulling out a cloth she started cleaning the lens. “I’m sure they know where you are even if you don’t check in.” She held up her camera and took a picture of Paul. “Your kitty also knows that room is a secret. She licked my lens when I tried to take a picture.” She smiled as she put the cover back on and slung the strap over her shoulder. She reached into her bag and pulled out a note book. “I’m going to take good notes while were up there. Who knows I might also learn something that could help me in the future. An then later I may request to see if you can teach me to pick a lock.” She grinned as she walked to the door. “An don’t give me I don’t know how to pick a lock. All spies or supposable banker men know how to pick locks.” She opened the front door and smiled lightly. “Though if you can’t then I don’t blame you.” She looked down at taboo. “By by I’ll bring your daddy home later.” She looked up as she waited for Paul. |

"Lockpicking? That would be irresponsible of me even if I was a spy." Paul shook his head laughing. "Honestly, ever since your friends took you to all those James Bond movies you've been making too many undue comparisons." The suave Sean Connery had added to Evas image of what kind of spy Paul was. After Doctor No she pestered him about surviving dangerous tropical animals and assassins. After From Russia with Love she checked his watch trying to find a strangle wire. Finally after Goldfinger she'd pestered him about a golf game Paul and his uncle Sebastian had played, wondering if they'd been sharing the course with crime bosses. Paul was thankful that his career wasn't as formulaic as the films. "I would invite you to one of my trips. But you would surely die from boredom when you spend the whole time watching me discuss taxes, investments and such. This show will be a lot better for you though, some good photo opportunities. Don't get caught up in notes though or you'll miss the good stuff. I don't think they'll stop and do over." After putting on his jacket and shoes Paul stepped over to the kitchen and retrieved a pet bowl from the fridge, one side containing tuna and the other holding a serving of milk. He laid the bowl on the floor so that Taboo would have something while he was out, though for now she didn't seem interested. "In your own time precious. I'll see you later tonight." Paul and Eva made their way downstairs to the front of the building where his Lotus was parked. The weather was good enough to park the open topped vehicle outside and the area was safe enough to not risk theft. He let Eva in first before circling around to the drivers side and starting the ignition. After a quick look around to make sure the road was clear the two were on their way. The end of work traffic had finished about an hour back so the drive was fast yet casual. |

Eva jumped with joy when she climbed into the Lotus. She wanted to press all his radio’s buttons but refrained from it. She didn’t want to push the wrong button could possibly get someone hurt. Then again she had thought about the idea that this was just a normal car. Most spies always had multiple cars, and in order to not make people curious they probably had a plane car. She tilted her head as she raised her camera and took a picture of the counsel. Even if it was a normal every day car she was always taught not to mess with anything in someone’s vehicle. They were always to expensive to repair, and even if she knew that Paul made a lot of money he was her friend and she wouldn’t willingly destroy their friendship over breaking something she didn’t know about. She looked up as Paul made the way down the street. She smiled lightly thinking about the only times she was ever in a vehicle was when Paul or her Step mother were driving. She was old enough to drive, but never even wanted to attempt it. She was content in letting others drive, and even walking. She watched as other vehicles drove by them without a care in the world, and she probably would have been carefree if she wasn’t so excited about going to see the magic show. She bounced slightly in her car seat as they passed by building on top of building. The closer they got the harder it was to contain herself. As they finally reached their destination Paul let her out at the front while he went to find a place to park. She smiled as she started taking pictures of the crowd and the front of the building. Then something caught her attention. She noticed that one of the people from the poster headed down a side street. The journalist instinct kicked in as she followed the man down the alley until she reached a trash bin she could hide behind. She peeked around to see their vehicle and they seemed to be loading things inside instead of unloading them. As always with her trusted camera in hand she started snapping photos. She watched as they closed up the truck and headed inside, and the truck on the other hand took off. She followed the truck out of the back road and continued to take pictures until it disappeared down the street. Eva found it odd, but pushed the thought aside as she took off around the corner to catch back up with Paul. She saw him standing at the front of the building searching for her. “Paul!” she shouted as she ran up to him. Taking a moment to catch her breath she grinned. “I was in the back taking pictures. They were already loading up equipment on their trucks. I guess there really wanting to leave this place fast.” She shrugged her shoulders as they headed into the theater and found their seats at a table at the side. Easy enough for her to get pictures and still wouldn’t bother the other people in the area. “Though I thought they had another show tonight,” she continued as she sat her bag down beside her. She looked up as the waiter came back to take their order. “Just a chicken salad for myself and water.” She laughed at Paul’s look. “Mom’s making cheesecake tonight. I want to be able to eat some when I get home.” She grinned as she shuffled through her bag for a moment before sitting back up. |

"Sneaking around backstage? I hope you don't intend to get us into trouble. Maybe they have a schedule conflict. Your flier said the show was one night only." When they had found a table reasonably close to the stage Paul put his jacket over the back of his chair and ordered a lemonade for himself. Eva had her camera at the ready as she got settled for the show. Her sneaking around was worrying. Paul had found out early on that she didn't enjoy secrets. Did she only want to go to the show to find out the tricks behind the act? "Save me a slice of that cake if you can. I never have time for desserts." "Ladies and Gentlemen." Came a booming voice from the stage wings. "Prepare yourselves for the awe and wonder of the Carnival of Curiosity." The curtains rolled upwards to show a hunched, cloaked figure with a cane hobbling forward. The audience were underwhelmed, letting out the occasional cough. As the figure reached the stage edge he sprang up straight, throwing his cloak off to reveal a dashing Latin man wearing a caped tuxedo. Holding his cane upwards he set off a blast of confetti and a thunder crash to the applause of the diners. "I am the Fantastic Fernando. The greatest master of the unknown. Tonight you will be entertained, astounded and on the edge of your seats. I would like to ask anyone with a camera to please hold all flashes until the end of each act in the interests of safety. Now on with the show." Stamping his cane on the floor and sweeping his cloak he disappeared with another thundercrack. The stagehands rolled out the props for the first act. A pair of twin women, both in identical short dresses with striped leggings and dyed hair. One had a black/red colour scheme and her sister with a blue/white motif. They took their places at opposite ends of the stage and were handed a bow and quiver of arrows. Each took aim as the stagehands balanced an apple on top of their heads. The audience watched in fearful silence. "The lovely Melody and Harmony are trained professionals. Please do not try this at home." Warned the announcer. The arrows were let loose simultaneously, splitting each piece of fruit in two and dropping them to the floor. The sisters turned and took a bow to the applause that followed. The rest of their act was similar. Each would take turns as the target while the other would take shots with arrows, knives and even javelins. At one point a stray shot went into the wings, followed by Coco the clown running across the stage, honking his nose with a prop arrow in his rear to the amusement of the audience. During this comedic interlude Paul couldn't help but notice one of the sisters nudging towards his and Evas table. The other one nodded for some reason. The stagehands moved the props around again as Fernando returned to the spotlight. Coco stood behind him imitating his movements as the audience tried not to laugh. "Ladies and Gentlemen." He turned glaring as the clown dropped the mimicry and pretended to check his watch. "Next I will amaze you with my powers over the mystic arts. As proof of my authenticity we will now pick a random member of the audience to assist." "How about this eager young lady?" "She looks like she'll have fun." A pair of voices spoke from behind Paul. Melody and Harmony were at their table, they must have came from a backstage entrance. They both helped Eva stand and guided her towards the stage as the audience clapped politely. Paul took her camera and grabbed a quick shot. "Enjoy being part of the show." He laughed. He was somewhat more at ease now, they must have been scouting for volunteers earlier when they were watching his table. Still weird though. Eva was led onstage as Fernando asked her name and introduced her to the audience. Coco stood next to her and pulled a red cloth from his pocket, handing it to Eva he walked off revealing the cloth was part of a trail of different coloured cloth, red then green then blue, yellow and back to red before starting over. As he walked around Eva soon had her arms bound to her sides by a brightly patterned improvised coccoon. Melody and Harmony stood on either side of her as the clown ran offstage. Fernando explained his upcoming act as the stagehands moved a box and table forward. "The three lovely ladies here will now be part of the greastest feat of magic. The Judgement of Solomon. Ladies, if you would prefer to assist in the division rather than be divided please raise your hand." Naturally only Melody and Harmony were in any position to do so. They both guided Eva over to the table, lifting her carefully into the box and locking her inside. The ends of the box closed over her neck and ankles leaving her head and feet sticking out. With a rapid swish Fenandos cane was transformed into a massive gleaming scimitar, followed by him stepping behind the box and raising the blade above his head. Paul took a photo of the before shot as the audience gasped. "Shazam!" Fernando bellowed as he brought the sword down, cutting clean through the box. Melody and Harmony put in a set of dividers and pulled the two halves apart revealing a clear gap in between. Fernando stepped forwards to take a bow as his two co-stars each took a seat on top of the boxes. The audience broke into rapturous applause and camera flashes. Taking the opportunity Melody leaned down to talk to Eva, taking an arrow out of her quiver and tickling her captives nose with the feathered shaft. At the other box Harmony followed suit, pulling one of Evas shoes off to idly tickle her foot. "So little Eva." Melody teased, unheard by the audience due to the clapping. "While we have you here. How about you tell us what you were spying for backstage? and give us the film rolls from your camera." Edited by Paul McLeod, Jul 2 2013, 09:45 AM.

Eva was enjoying the show and actually being able to spend some time with Paul. Though the only thing she was upset about was not being able to take pictures during the show. The sisters seemed very skilled at what they did, but she wondered if Paul was that good as well. While they were on stage she couldn’t help but glance back at him wondering what the extent of his training was. She had to make a mental note to ask him about it later. When the Fantastic Fernando took the stage she completely forgot about her mental note and was sitting on the edge of her chair during his magic tricks. Illusions she knew that, but she wanted to know how they were done. They were done in plane site and yet she couldn’t see the key to unraveling the mystery. When the sisters volunteered her to go on state she thought it was a bit weird. She had never been to a show, but she always thought that the magician always asked for a volunteer not pick one. Though she quickly pushed that thought away as the excitement of being able to get close to the show would bring her closer to figuring out their illusions. She handed her camera to Paul in order for him to take some pictures. Following the woman on stage she was excited to be able to participate. But the moment she found herself bound by a rope of handkerchiefs she started to feel uneasy. Trying to push the thought aside as she was placed in the box she tried her best to watch carefully as the box was cut in half and then separated. She found her head spinning at the thought but not being able to tell either. Being up here wasn’t helping any. The moment her shoe came off she knew what was next, and even though it was through her sock being tickled on the foot caused her to laugh. Though her laughing was short lived as the woman who was sitting on the box asked her about the back alley. She stared wide eyed at Melody before struggling against the binds. They weren’t budging at all. “I think I’m done with these tricks,” she growled. “Nonsense,” Melody said as she climbed off the box. “You volunteered so let us show you a good time.” With the help of her sister they put the box back together, and then helped her out. Eva struggled against them, but she felt a grip on her shoulder that almost caused her body to stiffen up slightly and she found that she couldn’t move at all. “Please stay,” Melody said as she hugged her tightly. “Yes,” Fernando said as he raised his hands in the air. “It seems my last act frightened our little friend here. Show her a round of applause and give her courage to continue on!” he called out to the crowed. As the crowed clapped she was lead over to another box, but this one was standing. They placed her in the box and closed it tightly. Harmony came out with an arm full of swords and stabbed each one into the ground to show that they were real swords. Fernando walked around picking up a sword and showing it to the crowd before stabbing it into the box. Eva on the other hand was finding out quite well that the swords were in fact real. As the first blade cut through it cut part of the sleeve on her coat. She cried as the next blade entered the box, but she found one part of the box if she stood really still was the safest part where none of the blades touched. She trembled slightly as the last blade entered just barley inches from her face. She stared at the blade before it was removed. “All you have to do is give us the film and this would be over with,” Melody’s voice echoed from the back of the box. “We’ll let you go back to your table with your friend and leave you be.” Eva blinked a couple of times now realizing what they were wanting. She felt the tears and knew the fear. She wondered if her father was ever scared on the job. He was always a helpful man and always taught her to do the right thing. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath and slowly let it out. She had apparently gotten pictures of something very bad, and it would more than likely go with the thefts going around. She had never been to a magic show, but had been following the story since the third case. An each case it was the same thing. Everything missing from everyone in the audience, but no one remembered. She smiled lightly as she pictured her father’s face. He was a soldier and dealt with classified information. People said he died, but she knew better. She would know if he died. She opened her eyes and looked around the box. Her father wouldn’t hand over something that was valuable enough to kill a person over especially when it turned out to be evidence against them. “No,” she spoke. Her voice quivering slightly as she did. “I will not give you the film,” she growled. “So be it.” Fernando’s voice echoed through the box as the blades continued to be removed one by one. At the end the box was opened allowing Eva to step out. “Ladies and Gentlemen. The last act for my show before we get on to the grand finally. I will make my lovely assistant here disappear.” As the crowd clapped Eva looked down and smiled a bit. A trap door stood below her feet. At least she could see the answer to at least one trick. Fernando brought out a large red cloth and with Harmony’s help draped it over Eva. “An on the count of three our little friend will be gone.” He turned to the audience. “Please help me count.” As the audience helped them count on the third number he pulled back the cloth revealing Eva was no longer standing on stage. “Ladies and Gentlemen I think you for your time,” he bowed along with Melody and Harmony. An in a puff of smoke the three of them disappeared as the curtains closed to prepare for the final show. Eva lay on the ground from where she had hit hard. She stared up at the stage floor before she found Melody and Harmony pulling her to her feet. “Nice show,” she said with a grin. “I’m not one for hitting women. That’s why I have my two lovely assistances,” he said as he walked past her. “Does your friend have the pictures or did you switch out the film before you came into the theater?” “Can you tell me how you managed to do all those tricks? It was the only reason why I even come. I’ve never seen a magic show.” Fernando laughed a bit. “I’ll explain your last trick in full dental here shortly unless you give me that film.” Eva shook her head. “No I’m good. I’m quick at making peace with my demons.” She glared at Fernando. He looked at her with amusement. “So you’re not scared?” “I’m petrified. I never said I wasn’t scared.” She shrugged her shoulders. “Can I get a drink? I’m thirsty.” “You’ll get to drink all you want in a little bit,” Harmony said as he helped Melody drag Eva toward the loading dock. |

Despite how common stage fright was and the nervousness that came from being the centre of attention, Paul was observant enough to notice that Eva was stricken with more than those. He'd taken a few more photos during the tricks she'd taken part in, noticed the performers whispering to her and seen how scared her reactions were. The final straw was the vanishing act which, unusually, didn't end with making the victim reappear. Grabbing his jacket and tucking the camera underneath he headed out to the lobby area to find a staff member. On stage the curtain rolled down for an interval. "The Carnival of Curiosity will be right back with the Mysterious Mesmero." "Excuse me. Could you keep an eye on table six? If my friend comes back tell her I'll be right back." This was just a precaution in case nothing was wrong. Perhaps the stagehands were letting Eva see the show from backstage, or she'd managed to get an interview out of one of the performers. As he slipped through a backstage door he tried to keep silent, not wanting to burst in like some kind of cinematic hero and give her another reason to suspect him. On the way he caught sight of Mesmero standing in front of a mirror fixing a turban with a ruby set just above the forehead. Several crew members stood listening to his instructions. "Just like the other shows. When I put the audience under you will relieve them of their valuables. I've seen to the manager earlier and he'll be bringing us the box office takings. Fernando and the girls are off and the loading area dealing with some brat that was spying on us earlier, but they have yet to find her camera. Make sure to check her friend at her table." Well that was something. The performers were intent on ripping off their viewers and the venue. The story in the newspaper Paul had read earlier in the evening made a lot more sense. The Carnival of Curiosity must have been performing at those other robberies and Eva had the misfortune of stumbling upon them. Paul rushed silently down a spiral staircase and under the stage. In the heavy dust he could make out four sets of footprints, a man in formal shoes following two women who were half dragging a third. He was on track at least. ****************************************************************************************************** "Well, you said you were thirsty. What do you think?" The twins had dragged Eva to a large glass cabinet while Fenando hooked a pipe up to an opening near the bottom. Melody and Harmony forced their captive inside and shut the door. Afterwards they started circling the box. "You may have heard of this. The water torture cell. Normally Fernando would be inside pulling off an escape act." Melody started. "..but tonight we think the 'torture' part is more applicable." Fernando turned a valve on the wall to start pumping water into the cell, it slowly started filling up from the bottom. Paul had just caught up at this point, tucking the camera into his coat and stashing it under a box before looking around for options. The performers continued their interrogation. "Houdini found a way out in two minutes. It took me years of study to get near that." Fenando tapped his cane on the glass. "Unless you tell me where that film is you'll find out what it was like for anyone who couldn't master the escape." Trying to work as quickly and quietly as possible, Paul had finally found something that could help. A stack of spare canes used by Fernando, likely all with different extras depending on his act. Pulling one out he checked over a few of the hidden buttons and switches before aiming at the twins and firing. Luckily a cable shot out and snagged both Melody and Harmony, circling around them several times before they hit the floor bound side by side. "Fernando? What are you doing?" Yelled Harmony. "Actually that was me." Paul stepped out twirling the cane. "I think you're taking things a little too far with your volunteer." Fernando hit a switch on his cane to extend a blade, which Paul copied after observing. Both men took a dueling stance, then rushed to attack. Each blade was used to deflect the other, picking up pace as each man intended to tire the other out. "I should warn you that I was undefeated at Oxford." Paul taunted. Fernando spat before responding. "It will take more than schoolboy training to best me with a sword." Seeing an opening Paul grabbed Fernandos cane with his free hand and dropped his own sword to deliver a powerful left cross punch. Fernando hit the floor shocked before he dropped another smoke bomb to make his escape. As the smoke cleared Paul turned the valve off to stop the water. Thankfully it had only gotten knee deep inside the tank. He opened the panel door and helped Eva out, untying her from the handkerchief rope. "I was actually talking about boxing, but he didn't let me finish. Are you okay?" |

Eva knew she wanted to cry, but she also knew that she was so scared that she couldn’t even think straight to cry. She had done stupid stuff before to get herself in trouble, but it was nothing that she couldn’t run away from. She was always good and running and hiding even when it came to someone having a gun. She was always quick on her feet and able to think straight. She didn’t know what it was about this situation that made it hard for her to think. Maybe it was the fact of drowning to death or being stuck in a tank where she couldn’t even free her arms to hit the glass. She cringed as she heard the water starting to come into the tank. Looking down only made her cry out and then to make matters worse she could feel the tears streaming down her face. She leaned back against the glass on one side and started kicking the glass with her foot. It was useless, but at least it eased her mind enough to concentrate on the change of commotion outside of the tank. Scared to death and fearing for her life she paid little to no mind of the outside world until know. She didn’t even notice that Paul was fighting Fernando with the sisters already dealt with. At that moment she almost forgot about her situation and was cursing the fact she didn’t have her camera on her. She hit her head against the glass a little harder than she wanted, but more or less achieving the fact that she was missing a perfect opportunity. Here he was proving his abilities right in front of her and she couldn’t capture any evidence to question him about it later. Though for a moment her mind might have wandered, but as the cold water lapped against her legs she was reminded quite well of the situation she was in. She kicked the glass again more out of anger than anything else. She should have known it was a trap from the start. Performers always asked for assistance from the audience not pick them out themselves. She watched as Fernando disappeared into a cloud of smoke leaving his own team behind to fend for themselves. Paul opened up the glass and helped her down onto the ground. After he had untied her she quickly wrapped her arms around him and started crying. It felt weird holding a male figure since she had never wrapped her arms around another since her father had died. At least not like this . . . not seeking comfort. An as Paul put his arms around her she couldn’t help but cry even harder and grip him even tighter. She didn’t want to let go of him not for a long time, but there were also questions and jabs she wanted to make at him about his fighting abilities. The thought of those made her laugh a bit. Reluctantly she stepped away from him and dried her eyes. She looked up at him and smiled lightly. “An you say you aren’t a spy. Those are some pretty sweet skills you just showed there,” she said with a grin. She looked over to the sisters who were bickering and sighed a bit, but almost forgot about the hypnotist and the clown. “Were still missing two,” she said as she looked back at Paul. With Paul’s nod she followed after him back to the stage area only to stop momentarily to retrieve her camera and his coat. She smiled as she slung the strap over her neck and followed after him. Though their trip to the stage was quickly brought to a stop. Paul quickly pulled her out of the way as a sword struck the beam next to them. She looked up at the clown as he juggled both swords in his hands. She had no doubt that they were probably the same ones from the box trick. They were very real and the fear was just the same as in the box. As Paul pushed her back into the corner she then realized that he was still carrying the cane he had obtained from earlier. She tilted her head for a moment in thought as she was starting to get her camera ready. Now she had the perfect opportunity to get a picture of Paul in action, but that thought quickly went out as another came in. If the clown was here trying to stop them that only meant the hypnotist was still on stage. Putting the lens cap back on the camera she ducked behind a row of crates and made her way toward the state. She hated leaving Paul behind and not being able to take any pictures of him in actions, but she also knew that she had to stop the hypnotist before he could steal form anyone. As she neared the side curtains he could see him hard at work. Only hoping that breaking his line of sight would disrupt the process she pulled on the curtain dropping it in front of him. He turned to glare at her and she couldn’t help but cringe and back up against the wall. “You little brat. Do you know how long it has taken us to come up with this job,” he barked as he started to approach her. His eyes almost seemed to be dilated as he approached her. “Do you know what happens to little children that think they can play detective?” “Reporter . . .” she squeaked out. “Who care,” he barked as he neared her. “I’ll show you exactly what Fernando has failed to.” It then dawned on her why his eyes were dilated as she looked back toward the stage. He darkened the room in order to work his abilities. With people’s eyes dilated they seem to take in more than they don’t realize especially when there is still a significant amount of light in the room. Eva removed her lens cap and turned on the flash of her camera. As he drew closer she brought the camera up and took a picture. With the darker surroundings the flash was brighter, and for the fact that his eyes had more time to adjust to the darkness the harsher the light would be. The cry proved her all to right. “You dumb brat,” he barked as he swung at her, but Eva quickly moved to the side. As he turned around she took another picture causing him cry out again. “When I get my hands on you your dead!” Eva continued the little maneuver two more times before she backed into another wall, but one she was aiming for. When she was able to fight for herself the surroundings had always worked best, and when she wasn’t tied up like a helpless little girl she could actually think on her feet. An as the hypnotist moved forward she took one more picture, but this seemed to have little effect on him. She bit her lip hoping that her plan would work out and if not at least prayed that Paul would show up soon. As the hypnotist charged forward furious at the fact she was able to avid him this long. She reached over to the ropes beside her and jerked one loses. As he went to doge it she pulled two more lose allowing him doge one and end up right under the third one. As he lay on the ground she gathered up a rope and tied it to his foot and the other to the last counter weight. As he tried to get up she quickly pulled the rope and surprising he was jerked up off the floor, but only half way. “Your too heavy!” she called out as she took a picture. “That should have taken you all the way up.” “You brat. Wait until I get my hands on you!” |
