So I've been thinking for a while, and I thought of this. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I have no idea how to balance things. I'd probably host a vanilla game before this to get some practice hosting

Minas Tirith (villagers)
Denethor: uses the palantir to see one person's role (cop)
Legolas: Using his keen eyesight, he can see who one person visits every night (tracker)
Boromir: Appears to be a villager. Just before the second night phase, he switches to the forces of evil.
Gimli: with his dwarvish hardiness, he survives one kill per game (bulletproof)
Frodo: starts with the ring. Each night phase, he can choose to hide using the ring. This gives him immunity to all night actions except for the Mafia kill, but he has a 50% chance of being discovered by the forces of evil.
Gandalf: Uses his knowledge and magical glowy powers to protect one person per night (doctor)
Aragorn: Just before the second night phase, he gains a night kill (Vigilante)
Sam: starts out knowing who Frodo is. If Frodo would be killed by a night action, Sam sacrifices himself instead.
Soldier: standard villager

Forces of Evil (mafia)
Witch-king: Counts for two votes. If he is killed at night, he stabs the attacker with a morgul-blade. If they are not protected, they become a standard mafia right before the next night phase. They are not informed of this. Smeagol’s ability counters this
Nazgul: standard mafia
Balrog: Once per game, he can reveal himself during the night phase. If he does so, he kills one player. This kills even through Gimli’s and Gandalf’s abilities.

Third Party:
Smeagol: Chooses whether to be Smeagol or Gollum on the first night phase. If he is Smeagol, he gets to investigate one person per night phase. If he is Gollum, he gets to kill a player once every other night phase. This does not reveal who has the ring, just what their role is. If he gets the ring, he automatically wins and ends the game.

Ring Rules:
If the possessor is killed at night, the person who killed him gains the ring. If he is killed by the mafia, the Witch-King gains the ring. If the Witch-King is dead, the ring goes to a random maf. If he is lynched, the person who started the lynch gains the ring. If the enemy has the ring for two day and night phases in a row, they win.

1) Most of Frodo's description seems to have more to do with the ring than Frodo. Is what's described here available to anyone with the ring?
2) What's the difference between a villager and an unknowing mafia member?
3) So, in order for Smeagol to get the ring, he has to start a lynch against the dude with the ring, and the lynch mustn't fail? That is near impossible to puppet into fruition.

I have a feeling the flavor for this game will be the most fun. >:3

I can see this playing out as Frodo completely dominating the game with immunity to night kills every night. At least put a cap on the ring usage, because he could just claim day one and protect himself from everything forever.

Just how many players would this need, like 25?

Oh, right. Would Balrog's kills go through ring protection or not?

And is Gimli virtually unkillable by night except by special powers? Maybe make him a bulletproof instead?

1) The hiding only applies to Frodo.
2) An unknowing maf is for all intents and purposes a villager, unless he is investigated by an investigative role.
3) I've been thinking, and I might change Gollum to a night kill every other night and Smeagol to an investigation every other night.
4. The Balrog's kill would not go through
5. Bulletproof is one night kill per game, right? Changed.

And the players would probably be about normal number, maybe 12-15.
