Roleplayer: Sayuri. Saya, if you ask and I agree. Literacy: Advanced Literate [although the length of my reply will often depend on how much I've got to work with] Warning! Warning! Alert! Alert!: I'm also female IRL. You know, for those of you who might be bothered by it. For some reason. Name: Tokitsu Shigeyuki ["Luxuriant Luck of the Harbor-Time"] Alias: Enjiren [alias, which is the name he's known by: "Dark Red Lotus"], Shige [should you know him well enough to have learned his real name] Age: 21 Gender: Male Alignment: Chaotic Neutral Kin: His birthparents are long dead, he assumes, but his adoptive parents [Umino Jotaro and Umino Madoka] live in Shima, a fishing-village of Mie prefecture in the Kansai region; Enjiren (carefully) passes messages and money in their direction when he can. Shigeyuki also has a younger sister named Tokitsu Chisame who travels Japan as a female bakuto, though she gambles under the name of Aoi [a pun-based name: "Aoi" can mean both "blue" and "hollyhock," and Aoi has a blue hollyhock tattoo] ; their sibling relationship is not widely known. Status: Single. Although he could be said to be "dating," if by dating you mean "seeing multiple people, including many pretty teahouse girls," but it's not like he's planning on settling down any time soon. Sexuality: Bisexual. Hey, it's the spirit of the times. Loyalty: Himself. That's loyalty enough for him, although Enjiren won't screw with other bakuto unless they screw with him first. Occupation: Bakuto, an itinerant professional gambler, though sometimes he... "freelances"... on the side. Height: 5'8"/177cm Weight: 139lbs/63kg Likes: Winning ; Gambling ; Money ; What Money Can Buy ; Pretty Women ; Handsome Men ; Shibui Types [Beautiful With A Hint Of Bitterness] ; People Who Like Him ; People Who Don't Like Him But Amuse Him Anyway ; Feeling Good ; Shochu Dislikes: Losing ; Going Bust ; Getting Stabbed (It Hurts, You Bastards!) ; Having His Clothes Ruined ; People Trying to Order Him Around ; People Who Take Advantage Of Others ; Natto Personality: Enjiren is basically a nice guy, deep down. ... Really deep down. Not that he's unpleasant on a day-to-day basis, because he's not, but it's a cheerful, warm, often-daring pleasantry that often results in your getting drunk, waking the next morning only to find that he's long gone. He's a greedy one, that's for sure, and almost never turns down a chance at cash or anything free, but he's generous with his money - he can't take it all on the road, can he? - and has a surprisingly soft heart once you get past the bravado and the lazy grin. Against his common sense, he finds himself coming to the aid of women, children, and the elderly: He's quick to take advantage of idiots, but even a good-for-nothing gambler draws the line at cruelty. Habits: Enjiren likes to drink, likes to gamble, and likes to sleep around; in essence, he's a simple person. He rarely looks at others when they're talking, which had caused problems due to its disrespectful nature, and he often substitutes a hissed "Tsch!" in the face of being inconvenienced. Even when he's just waiting or sitting still, he'll be rolling a coin across his palm or his knuckles, just to keep his hands busy; and, at casual moments, he hums folk-songs of the fisherman in Shima. Due to his 'rustic' lifestyle since he was a young boy, his speech is charming but both more melodic and rougher-sounding than standard Japanese, giving him the Sengoku-era prototype of the modern-day Kansai-ben*. * If you don't know what it means when I mentioned Kansai-ben, it's the accent of people from the Kansai region, around Osaka. Practically, this means that while other characters might say "Akira-san," Enjiren would say "Akira-han~", and when he calls you an idiot you won't be a baka, you'll be an ahou. I'll translate it when it comes up in the RP so you know how to react, but for further explanation see here. Inventory: Not much more than a woven-bamboo bag containing his rations, simple fare with a bottle of shochu tucked in with the onigiri and takuan [pickled daikon]. He does carry a hanafuda deck and a set of dice in his sleeves, though. And money, usually in his bento box. When he has any money, that is; he doesn't usually hold onto it for long. Weaponry: Yeah, Enjiren has a sword, but he carries it as an umbrella; wearing it out in the open is practically asking random morons to come up and challenge you. He keeps throwing-knives in the sleeves and coat of his kimono, though. Ability: He's actually pretty skilled with the sword, but using it bores him and even his fighting-style looks casual, focusing on misdirection to make it appear as though he's always where his opponent just missed. Enjiren is a dead-on shot with his throwing-knives, though since it's hard to actually kill someone with them he usually settles for knocking their weapons free or pinning their hand; he learned it from a geisha in Kyoto who turned out to be a ninja currently attempting to assassinate (thankfully) someone else. And his super-special talent? He can fling coins, dice, and cards hard enough to stun (in the case of coins and dice) or cut (in the case of cards), and his accuracy with the unorthodox weapons - usually used for settling rowdy drunks or bad losers - is equal to that of his knives. Appearance: Enjiren - a.k.a. Shigeyuki - is fairly tall for a man of his time, with the weight easily distributed and giving him a lean yet muscular physique not unlike that of a swimmer's (which makes some sense; he was a fisherman for a time, after all). His skin is tanned from exposure to the sun and to saltwater, with a few white scars patterning the flesh; that usually goes unnoticed due to his elaborate tattoo of green-stemmed lotus-blossoms the deep-crimson color of cooling blood, which begins at his collarbone and curls up around his neck while stretching down to the back of his hands and the small of his back. The tattoos are part of what makes him well-known among Japan's gamblers, as - like many bakuto - Enjiren wears his kimono jacket open, tossed casually over his shoulders to trail behind him when he moves; the kimono and accompanying hakama are an eye-catching white edged with curling whorls of red to red-orange to orange that reach up from the hem of the hakama and jacket and from the cuffs of the kimono's draping sleeves (perfect for hiding weapons, dice, and cards in). Enjiren has brilliant red hair that just brushes his shoulders, often held back in an unruly short tail, and his eyes are dark blue, and his near-constant grin is flashing white - particularly against his tanned skin - with the hint of fangs. Biography: The Tokitsu is... was... a cadet branch of the great Hojo Clan, who rivaled even the greatest House for dominance in Japan; unfortunately, such status brought vicious in-fighting to the bloodline, and that wasn't even counting outside assassination attempts and thinning the herd through battle. The result was a family known for the amount of land they controlled and for their refined outer appearance, but within they were fraught with inner schisms that occasionally cost them greatly as a whole. One casualty of these internal feuds was the unfortunate Tokitsu bloodline, a fairly minor offshoot of the great Clan that nonetheless held a valuable central region dotted with mines, a rarity in much of Japan and a necessity to make assorted items... such as weapons. As the Gekokujo [Revolution] began showing signs of exploding into country-wide violence, the Tokitsu were put under further pressure to surrender its family lands to other hands, and that pressure included attacks on the lives of the Tokitsu themselves. The lord and lady of Tokitsu had two young children: A boy, Shigeyuki, and a girl, Chisame. Fearing for their lives, and knowing that the bloodline must continue even if they did not, Lord and Lady Tokitsu had their children spirited away in the night by a trusted retainer, who transported the siblings to a tiny fishing-village far from the Kanto region. There Shigeyuki and Chisame were entrusted to a childless couple, a fisherman and an oyster-diver, with the understanding that the Tokitsu would reclaim their children when it was safe to do so. A year or so later the Tokitsu family estate was burned, and - since no-one ever came for the children - Jotaro and Madoka raised the children as their own. When he grew old enough, Shigeyuki told his adopted parents and his sister that he didn't want the life of a fisherman; that while being a samurai was in his blood, it was no longer an option for him, and so he would set out on his own. Before he did so, Shigeyuki bid farewell to his sensei, an aging man yet swift with a blade, who had once served the Emperor Himself as a guard in the Imperial Palace; when he returned to the house, Shigeyuki received the sword his guardian had left for him, said his goodbyes, and took his leave. Shigeyuki traveled far in those early years, quickly learning that he had indeed been sheltered in that peaceful town by the sea; on numerous occasions he almost died, only to pull through at the last moment, lesson learned. He discovered that he had a talent for the dice and the cards, and by the time he was seventeen he'd become much the person he is today: Brash and careless with a lazy grin, wearing the brilliant tattoos that earned him the name by which the world knows him - Enjiren. |
