A long time ago, in the age of the Shadow Games,
duels between monster spirits were widespread.
The remnants of the stone carvings these monster spirits were sealed in
were the inspiration behind the game of Duel Monsters, and the monsters
within the carvings were long thought to be simple mythology.
Now a group of Duel Academy students have unearthed their own power!
It's time to duel!

[ The following transcript has been translated from Arabic ]

No light is so pure, that it snuffs out the shadows in the corner. Not one being is perfect. Everyone has their secrets, their shadows, their...monsters.
That's the belief I carry into this office as president, my fellow countrymen. It's the belief I carry now as our nation recovers from our crisis of identity.
Two years ago, our country was a nation ruled by Islam, like almost everywhere else in the Middle East. And about that time, there was a small movement to renew interest in the ancient religions of our past, the one worshiping Ra and all the other Egyptian gods. It sounded ridiculous to some of us, didn't it? Modern-day humans, worshiping gods who have been reduced to little more then mythology for children and archaeologists to study.
But the movement defied all expectations. It made history. The movement rapidly gained the support of not just a few Egyptians, but hundreds of thousands. It shocked everyone. How could a deeply-Islamic country somehow be full of so many people secretly holding these beliefs? The only thing I can compare it to is when the Japanese, centuries ago, lifted the ban on Christianity thinking there were nothing to ban now, and were surprised to see that thousands of Japanese came out of hiding as legitimate Christians.
But our coming-out was much more drastic. It caused the Egyptian Civil War. It caused the deaths of thousands of our own kind. And it resulted in the overturning of the grip Islam had on our country. Egypt was not an Islamic country anymore. Egypt was now its own once again.
And you, my fellow countrymen, elected representatives like myself to preserve our culture and re-born religion so it doesn't fade back into the sands of time, and that they are laid as the new foundation of our country for centuries to come. I am extremely honored by this opportunity, and I have already set my plans in motion to ensure that these goals are carried out. I have arranged for all our remaining Islamic monuments to be torn down and replaced by monuments for the Egyptian gods. I have tripled our archaeological efforts, and I have top men ensuring that none of our ancient treasures are abused and sold on the black market.
This is our new identity. This is the identity we were born with. The one we always struggled to find and understand. It has been our shadow forever as we tolled under Islam, not daring to question Islam for fear of what could come to us.
But we accepted our shadow. And it has defined us in whole new ways that we could never have seen coming.
And now, we are finally and truly Egyptians. Let's ensure that it is the future for our children and our children's children.
No light is so pure that there are no shadows in the corner. But our future will feel so much like it. Let's head towards it.

......................................

"And that was the entire transcript from the newly appointed Egyptian president," the news reporter said on the TV screen. The television was a lonely box set in a corner of the ceiling, looking down on the tables and chairs of the Duel Academy cafeteria, which seems to be filled with only a few students today. "It still baffles many experts across the globe as to how a country of Egypt's reputation could toss asides Islam and seek to rebuild its ancient religion once more, and..." the television continues to blab on.

(Alrighty, get to posting! All of your characters are in this room unless stated otherwise, so get to it. Even if you haven't signed up before this update got posted, this is a good time to come in. So go for it! This is largely a re-post of the original first post, so feel free to either do the same thing you did before, or do something different. And remember, you don't actually have your monster spirit yet, unless you have good enough backstory to explain it.)

Damn Slifer Slackers always getting in the way of my perfect meal. No matter... I will be top Duelist again this year with my new favorite card...

*stares blankly at his Black Crow Dragon card*

Hmmph, Let's see those slackers try to keep a monster out when I am around... hehe

This together with my new Harpie Deck. I cannot be beaten!!

After listening to the reading of the transcript from the Egyptian President, Chayne stood to his feet and walked over to the nearest trash can, dumping what was left of today's lunch. It was better than usual, today, and he usually held an indifferent attitude towards the meals at the Duel Academy.

After throwing away his food trash, Chayne scanned the cafeteria, just briefly, noticing that there were a few faces he hadn't seen before. Even new Slifer Red's were standing out to him, now. Back then, they would come in and couldn't beat a Yellow, but in time he learned that these three classifications of Slifer Red, Ra Yellow, and Obelisk Blue hardly mattered. Walking along, he stopped in front of the beverage machines. He fed the machine the proper money, and promptly presed the button that matched his drink of choice: Today it was "Rade" drink. Anything ending in "Rade" from "Sliferade" to "Monsterade" was considered a "Rade" drink. More or less a running joke considering how many have come along since the original two.

Cheers to the new school year. Hopefully, it brought along some new potential. Chayne cracked his drink, taking a gulp from it, and snuck a smirk across his lips. 3 years in the academy, and most of them felt the same, but this one was different. He assumed it to be the fact that it is his last year. Kind of standing around, Chayne thought about what's next on his list of things to do today.

[ GM NOTE: Remember, I'll be trying to update this once a day or every other day, so check this topic often. ]

The intercom in the cafeteria, and across the Academy, chimed to get everyone's attention, and then spoke in an amplified voice.
"Attention, students. The plane carrying the final group of new students will be arriving shortly. Once they are all integrated into the rankings, the first duel of the year, and the only duel for today, will begin shortly in the stadium. This year, because of the potential of the incoming first-year class, the duel will be between the best duelist of that class, and an Obelisk Blue player hand-picked by Crowler. All Obelisk Blue nominees for the duel should have been notified of their candidacy, and should be prepared with their best deck on hand in case they are chosen. Any and all students who wishes to watch the duel are allowed to head over to the stadium now and get the seats they want before the rest of the Academy comes in.
"And finally, please be reminded that a portion of the first-years are Egyptians who follow their ancient religion. We here at the Duel Academy do not wish to see the same prejudice we've been seeing in some parts of the world against these people. Be professional, and be open-minded and courteous. These Egyptians are aspiring duelists just like you, and they shouldn't be mocked for their beliefs.
"Thank you for listening, and here's to a great new year!"
The intercom chimed off. Sounds like everyone should head to the stadium while they still can.

Saranto glanced nervously around the room, only half-listening to the intercom blathering on overhead. Noticing the lack of people in the cafeteria, he decided against trying to socialize and headed for the door. Even if he'd failed to go up to Obelisk Blue, he wasn't going to miss the first duel of the year.

Jason sat there letting his eyes wander around the room. He found himself staring at the wall for most of it. Soon after he decided to get up and throw his trash away in the nearest trashcan. He was thrilled but nervous all at the same time. No one in the room seemed interested in talking so he sat there and had slight regrets for even deciding to come to this place. He was amazed he even got to come here considering he really couldn't even duel. No Avatar

Sora paced around the room. Thoughts clouded his head. How well would he be able to battle, and how strong will his new partner be? He decided to go check out the competition during the first duel.

New to Duel Academy, like many others, Shon eyed the entire cafeteria for a good while. The first thing that struck his attention was an Obelisk Blue, standing near the television, almost hypnotized by it. The guy looked familiar, with his ghost white hair.
I wonder... Thinking to himself, he continued looking around the room, noticing a young girl texting. She seemed a little anxious for something or someone. After her, he noticed another guy, Slifer Red, though. He was also preoccupied by the television.

Shon stood up. It was almost overwhelming, and as a person used to dealing with high volume areas and pressure, this was different... It was surreal. Being among many other duelists, driven by different passions, all expressing their hearts' desires through one catalyst - Duel Monsters. He threw away his trash, and walked over to the Obelisk Blue. He wished to see if he would be kind enough to share some info on what to expect around here, and the best ways to advance, within the academy.

Standing a couple of feet away, Shon stretched forward his hand.
"Hey there. I'm Shon."
Out of his peripheral line of sight, Chayne saw a younger student come up to him, hand stretched forth.

"Hey there. I'm Shon."

Turning to face him, Chayne scanned him for a brief second.

Slifer Red, huh? Well I'll be... Smirking a little bit, Chayne accepted Shon's hand with his own, and shook firmly.

"Chayne's the name. Chayne Weert."

"You've got quite the pair to just walk up to an Obelisk Blue. Especially on the first day. Most new students like yourself, are too caught up in the colors and rank associated with them to remember we're here to learn the same game. Nice to meet you, though."

Chayne, huh? I was right, in my suspicion. He's the famed Machine-type duelist. One of the higher ranking Obelisk Blues around.

Shon couldn't help but let a smile slip, after being complimented on his courage to walk up to Chayne, and the fact that he's talking to one of the best of the best. This was his golden opportunity to pick his brain for 3 years of experience.

"Thanks, Chayne. I figured I'd ask you a little about what to expect... ya know. Staff members, teachers, do's n don'ts of the campus, but most importantly dueling."

"Uhh... well, where should I start?"

Chayne looked up, while scratching his head to organize his thoughts a bit.

"Firstly, Crowler... avoid him. Secondly, if caught, do whatever he asks of you, then disappear. Easiest way to get through your time in the Academy. Do's: Even though we duel, make sure you set some time out for yourself, physically. I see guys and girls around here that let themselves go something horrible, just because of Duel Monsters. Don't let that be you. Don'ts: You're already breaking one, but I don't mind. In fact, knowing me will get you on good terms with a few other Blues, but some aren't so easy. If I'm not around, don't bother them. They can be bullies to freshmen. And last but not least... Dueling: Words are rewarded to the victorious. If you need to speak, make sure you're the last one standing. If you're not better, push yourself to be better. Helps with the ladies or guys, whatever you're into."

Chayne chuckled a bit.

"Hey I've gotta go. I like to take a breather outdoors, before my next class starts, another 'don't'. Ciao."

Shon chuckled at Chayne's little joke, all the while absorbing the info.

"Thanks, man. I appreciate it. I'll be sure to keep your advice in mind."

Chayne walked away, heading towards the cafeteria doors. Shon turned his attention to the television, checking out what else was on, until he noticed everyone in the cafeteria migrating outside.

Where's everyone-

"To the stadium." Chayne said, almost as if he could hear him thinking it.

Shon followed along, just to see what the fuss was about.

Jason watched the conversation between the two boys and wished he had someone to talk to. He now regretted even coming here. He'd never expected to be this lonely. Jason listened as he began to hear sounds coming form outside. He eagerly got up, and walked right out the door. No Avatar

Jayden looked up from his cards upon hearing the intercom. So the first duel of the year? Whoa, damn. I got to hurry to the stadium! Jayden started to pile his cards, mid-experiment, back into his metal-tin box. He had a stray thought of Crowler calling him up for the duel, but he shrugged it off with a grin. Nah, I didn't ace my exam that well. He was still feeling happy from having earned the Obelisk Blue rank, so he could joke about himself a little.
Abruptly, though, the happiness turned sourly to annoyance. Wait, Crowler. Ah, man... Jayden groaned. I'm in Obelisk Blue now. I have to deal with Crowler every day now. Jayden started to really worry about how to deal with Crowler. Sure, Crowler was a loon, but he was a picky loon. And the head of the top rank at the Duel Academy. What if I lose in front of him...What if?
Jayden took a breath and tried to relax. Hey, remember. One day at a time.
Right, yeah, Jaden thought, treating his previous thought like someone else said it to him. He thumped his chest to encourage himself. Let's go! I got this!
With all his cards put away, Jayden headed towards the exit of the cafeteria with the other students, but then he noted a familiar face in the crowd. Dark skin, white hair--
Chayne!
Jayden recognized his former fellow Ra Yellow, now in Obelisk Blue, and waved at him. "Hey! Chayne!"

Walking along, Chayne was lost in thought on the way to the stadium, when all of a sudden he heard his name a short distance away.

"Chayne!"

Turning in the direction of the voice, Chayne had to dodge a few passerbys in order to see who it was, but in his mind the voice registered as very familiar, due to the Southern-American twang it possessed. Once he looked around, he spotted source: A curly puff of hair, in an afro-shape, atop a very tall figure. It was Jay!

"Hey, Jay! How are you, man?"

Noticing his jacket, Chayne grinned with joy, something not often seen around the academy.

"Blue looks nice on you! Congratulations."

Jayden caught up with Chayne, and grinned at Chayne's compliment. "Thanks, man! Pretty glad to be here at last. What's you've been up to the last year or so? It's been forever."

Kuro sees both Jayden and Chayne talking. He remembers beating them in last years school tournament. Being the guy that he is, Kuro saw the perfect opportunity to show off to his class mates.

"Hmmph, my my.... if it isn't ol' Chayne and Jayden!"

"Are you chumps going to duel and lose to me like you did last year? Or are you just going to run and hide like the dogs you are. You don't stand a chance against me and my new deck. HAHAHAAHA"

Kuro continues to sit there with a smirk on his face. His big-headedness shows and everyone in the school wants to bring him down just to crush his huge ego.
