Due to convenience reasons, SHS will no longer be operating on this site! We are now located on facebook and are using discord for the chat. For information, our discord chat is here: https://discord.gg/84ue8Vv. It has been a pleasure meeting and serving everyone on this website, but if we wish to move on, we must start fresh in a new location. I hope everyone understands and we hope to see new and old faces. With all that is said and done, SHS is officially up and running again and we had our first tournament on 2/24/2017!! As discussed, we can still hold the 10 year anniversary party. - Thanks for you understanding! With love, Pijy

Abs...

Okay, so I was just doing sit-ups when it suddenly occurred to me...

what exactly is the value of developing muscles in this region?

Is looks really everything ab muscles are good for? I mean... you can't use them in self defense. There's no sport that relies on the abs. They won't help you with everyday brute labor tasks (IE, lifting and moving furniture.)

I'm sure I must be wrong. There must be a good reason to develop your abs other than just for good looks. What is it?

Yeah, that was one of my summer goals.

So now I'm doing at least 3 sets of at least 30 push ups and at least 30 sit ups a day and running at least a mile at least twice a week.

I'm using the phrase "at least" at least eight times in this forum post. At least.

impressive. i think if i can get myself to, ill start doing sit-ups and push-ups daily beginning monday so that way ill have a good length of time to develop some muscle. also when training abs, dont forget to work out the back muscles to balance it out. that's one thing i learned in summer gym class that was actually important.

I think working out your abs is one of the single best exercises you can do. It helps bring balance to your core and your core is actually used in almost every sport you can play...

Uhhh...

OK, I haven't been working my back muscles.

Is there some exercise you can do without equipment for your back? (The one I found so far is a lat pulldown... our family doesn't have one and I have no intentions of going to the gym even though everyone in the family gets to go for free because my dad's in the navy...)

The abdominal muscles are far more important than you think, firstly muscles burn far more energy so its easier to maintain them than it is to get them. Secondly they are responsible for felxing the lower back and also help in respiration, because they are anchord to the rib cage.

You can see why they are useful, because once you're out of breath your abs kick in to help you take much deeper breaths. And also because they are responsible for the lower back, they do actually help with lifting, which is a very similar movement to a crunch, and they also help in attaining greater flexibility.

Keeping balance in your core is very important. Lat pulldowns are good but they are more for your upper back. Your lower back is part of your core. Most people get enough exercise for their lower back (eg. by just walking your lower back is getting exercise).

But another exercise you can do for your lower back is put yourself in the top of the push up position (but resting on your elbows instead of your hands) so that your legs and back form a straight line. Then hold this position for like a minute or whatever feels comfortable. Rest, then repeat 2 or 3 times.

Well, the abdomindal muscles and obliques can help you take a punch to the body.

Also it's good to be in shape, and it will make getting off the couch easier lol.

I'm trying to become stronger, my goal is to bench either my bodyweight (130 lbs.) or 150 lbs. by the end of summer. But my arm will delay that, although I got my staples out today.

I'm really neglecting my core and my legs...I also gotta start doing some more cardio...but It'll have to wait till this arm is fully healed (hopefully not much longer).

That's cool, I work out with my friend too, he loves to work out.

Weightlifting is a diesease, the longer you go without doing it, the more frustrated you get. It's been more than 2 weeks since I last lifted...I'm pretty pissed off!!!
