  • My first real program...

Due to convenience reasons, SHS will no longer be operating on this site! We are now located on facebook and are using discord for the chat. For information, our discord chat is here: https://discord.gg/84ue8Vv. It has been a pleasure meeting and serving everyone on this website, but if we wish to move on, we must start fresh in a new location. I hope everyone understands and we hope to see new and old faces. With all that is said and done, SHS is officially up and running again and we had our first tournament on 2/24/2017!! As discussed, we can still hold the 10 year anniversary party. - Thanks for you understanding! With love, Pijy

My first real program...

Well, I only got the idea this morning... and I worked all day on it.

My parents seem to always be suspicious of what we're doing on our computers. To ease their minds, I've created what I dub, "The Watcher!"

I've been testing it for the past 6 hours and... it seems to do it's job very well. It takes up an average of 0.8% of the CPU just silently watching you. Every 15 seconds to an hour (it's completely random... if it were a set time interval it would be predictable and so easily avoidable. If it was just recording continuously, then it'd take up a lot of hard drive space not to mention the fact that my parents wouldn't have the time to go through it all,) it'll just take a quick picture of your whole screen and transfer it to the drop box of my dad's computer. Things in the drop box can't be deleted without his admin password. And the whole thing goes so fast you can't stop it. You also can't quit the program. It wasn't something deliberate I made it do... but I have no objections because it's not supposed to be something you can just quit. Of course... force quit still works on it.

I think I'll make it so it does something special on start up. Like... it should jump up and down and say "I wasn't open but now I am! They had me closed for some reason! You might want to look into it!"

I think I may just try selling the program... of course my inner freetard won't let me. Maybe I'll make it free the first week but then after that it'll cost $5? Maybe...

I would be very careful how you market this, to help protect younger children is one thing, but to allow over controlling parents to take away their kids privacy is another.

It seems to me that the internet is the only place where you have percieved anonymity and privacy, but in actual fact you have neither. Which in my opinion is a flaw in the internet.

Lol if the kid is doing something where their overcontroling parents don't approve they should be either able to get away with it using a rootkit to filter data sent by the program or stop the program on their own and send fake screenshots to make it look like they were not on or they just shouldn't do what their parents don't approve of.

Right now my idea is to make it so it determines the next time it should send a screenshot but not telling anyone. If the other computer doesn't receive a screenshot at that time, it'll make a notice that it suspects the system has been compromised.

So if you try blocking it, it'll know something is wrong.

I'm not really sure how I'll make it work though.

...

Another idea is to change the program completely. Instead there's just a script on the computer you're monitoring. Then there's a program on the parents computer where they can run the script remotely. They can also set the program up to run automatically so it can continue running even if the parents are away.

Yeah, I'm sure lots of people would be.

...

Perhaps so many that parents just stop trying to do anything about it?

Or they try harder and actually come up with something that works.

...

I made it for my parents so that they'll be able to see everyone is okay. <_< One of them in particular (I won't say which, because maybe the program will get a screenshot of me writing this post,) tries hard to get me in trouble because they think men are inherently dirty and will... *cough* yeah. (Oh, I guess you can pretty easily guess which one it is.)

So you've become a prisoner to you're own innovation. Oh how ironic :P No Avatar

When it comes down to the option of my computer being moved out of my room to a more public place so my parents can always just take a peak over my shoulder or me writing a program to always just send them pictures and it staying in my room, I'd much rather it stay in my room and have a program that takes screenshots and hands them over.

So this is more of a compromise.

They get what they want... the ability to keep an eye on me while I'm on the internet.

I get what I want... the computer in my bedroom.

Parents found it insufficient, the computer was moved anyways.

I guess this means I get a new backdrop for my pictures now, right? All good...

People would probably buy it to spy on OTHER people, since that WAS it's purpose as a program, but then it'd be considered a worm type thing. That, and people would know it's installed and it's a bit too big to be a worm in its current form. XD It's pretty close to a computer worm though., and kinda scary to think how you could change it into a real one O.o

Mmm....n/m what I said, I don't wanna be blamed for giving you the idea if you decide to and it creates some horrible computer eating monster that eats its way through the militarys database and launches nukes causing a horrible and catostrophic armaggadon that the cold war didn't even threaten to cause. *Hides*

The way it works the computers would have to both be connected to the same network.

So unless you're leaving your local network open and someone with wrong intentions just happens to set up their computer in range of your network and somehow they happen to install the program on your computer (they'd either have to know your admin password to access the computer remotely or be at it physically ... in which case they'd still need your password... or if they tricked you by sending it in an email and tell you to install it... in which case you're an idiot to do it...) and they'd have to keep their computer in range of your network for it to send the pictures back. And if they're on your network you'll be able to see them in every Finder window.

So... yeah... it can't be used as a worm. Worms can't exist on Mac OS unless people manually give the programs their passwords and manually install them.
