Due to convenience reasons, SHS will no longer be operating on this site! We are now located on facebook and are using discord for the chat. For information, our discord chat is here: https://discord.gg/84ue8Vv. It has been a pleasure meeting and serving everyone on this website, but if we wish to move on, we must start fresh in a new location. I hope everyone understands and we hope to see new and old faces. With all that is said and done, SHS is officially up and running again and we had our first tournament on 2/24/2017!! As discussed, we can still hold the 10 year anniversary party. - Thanks for you understanding! With love, Pijy

What I am about to show you is one of the first drawings I made for the comic, its a brainstorming sheet where i basically draw anything i have plans to include in the comic and see if it works or not. This isnt the very first brainstorming sheet, the first one i made was to decide if i wanted a more detailed, or a simplistic cartoony look for the comic. At the end I settled on cartoony for 2 reasons, 1) although I can draw more detailed artwork, keeping it consistent and on demand is a whole different story 2) cartoony fits the tone of the story better and allows me to get away with a few gags i couldnt do if the characters were more life like.
The second brainstorm I did was to settle on the style of cartoon, on this sheet you can see some big eyed characters, a head that looks a bit like a crash test dummys, and the design i finally settled on, the "bobble head" design, I picked this mainly because I think its unique, it allows me to create several unique, yet similar looking characters, and I personally prefer the look of it.

So here is the sneak peak I told you about, remember the final comic is not going to be sketched in pen and scanned in, firstly i will sketch it in pencil, and then scan it into the computer where i will then ink the outlines, colour it, and finally add the background and the details before posting it here. Expect the first comic up before the end of the week, 2morrow even if i have the time.

I don't want to be rude.
But...they are not really good, if you're going to make them simple...it's just....well...wierd.

Yeah...

I'm with Art and Indie.

But then again, he said this:

Remember that was with a cumbersome pen, if you have anything against the "bobble head style" itself them just say so, and no the first comics may not be that great but i'm still learning the tablet, also I would rather have simple and consistent, advancing the comic as my skill slowly advances, than go straight for the penny arcade look and cock it up big time, although i could make a standalone peice i wouldnt be able to replicate the same character at that level of detail time and time again. Also take any webcomic you read, and look at the first few, i think you'll find that most of them are much more simplistic as the current issues, growing with the artist, and that most of them have had some sort of formal training beforehand as well. Ok I picked it because I liked its artistic style, and uniquness, and ok it is a bit out of practise but i am a bit out of practise, so what I will do is post images of all the other less detailed designs i opted out of and see what people prefer.

EDIT:
Ok alternate design 1, in this design i sketch the skeleton of a character, scan it in and then the rest of the work is done on tablet.
http://i39.tinypic.com/e00e9w.jpg
Pros.
1)Gives it a more detailed apperance
2)Makes characters more human like (why this is a pro I'm not sure)
Cons.
1)Takes longer to draw each character, and therefore takes a lot longer to draw a single strip.
2)Consistency is compromised to an extent, but still not as much as drawing a much more detailed and life-like comic.
3)A lot of the work relies on the tablet, so if it breaks or i am not as proficient with it as i am a pencil the comic wont turn out so great.

Alternate design 2 is inspried by rayman, as all he is made up of is a torso and extremities, I basically just drew a random character to show how this would look.
http://i42.tinypic.com/2pq0tpu.jpg
Pros.
1)Characters can perform more cartoony behaviour, not limited to physics or restraints or regular human body.
2) Shorter drawing time as a) I dont have to draw limbs and b) if a character is in a non standing position it wont take as long for me to work out where the limbs would be so he wouldnt look mangled.
Cons.
1)First few comics will have shaky outlines as i get used to tracing the design on the tablet.
2)Wont allow for a great deal of character individuality, as only the head and the colour of the torso would vary between characters.

I like Alternate Design 1. I suggest you do that one. Good job!

And yeah, Kabbible, it does, in a way.

Alternate design 1 was my 2nd choice before the bobble head design, however it takes a long time and its consistancy is compromised, two things you may not necessarily see in the end result, but will bug me in the production. I picked the bobble head because it was the best of both worlds, it meant i could create most of it on pen and paper where my skill is better and i could make it a bit more realistic that alternate design 2. However if the majority of people prefer alternate design 1 then I will more than happily use that instead, since the comic is still in storyboard stage and its easy to change anything. No Avatar

Hmm, I like it. Its interesting. Also, if you are going with the cartoony style trying comparing yourself to other artists (personally, ones you like) try to draw like that (sketch their drawings trace, copy, w.e) and after that, adapt from the style to the way your most comfortable with. My drawings started to look like crap right from the start. But I met this guy (one of my asian older cousins) who can try anything I told him to, asked him to draw me some megaman. He drew everything top notch. Proportions were right and w.e. I looked at the way he drew. Studied it and tried something different but somewhat..similar. SO yeah.

Yup, its all about learning to draw in different styles after learning the basics. Choose the style you want and start from there : P

Anyways, it looks good lyc, cant wait to see how the final thing ends up.

Oh yeah, if you think drawing on paper and then doing the scaning and the other stuff takes to long you can try sketching directly in the computer with your tablet and then working on the lines with the pen tool (or the method you want, there are lots of ways to do it lol)
