OK, so I have been looking at MC servers as of late and I can manage a decent 4-6GB server with dedicated IP and infinite storage etc for Ł15.50 p/m I know a lot of people here play Vanilla so I got thinking, based on a lot of other servers I have seen and been on about a few things that we could implement. Obviously I will be testing this on LAN prior to paying for anything to ensure everything is all good and working ready to upload instantly Firstly how many people would be interested? obviously with 4-6GB we could easily handle all of SHS playing with no lag at all or if any very little. Since most of you are based in the US/Canada I should get a server in the US right? So options so far (Bare in mind all these are optional and just listed as ideas for you to view and post thoughts on), Complete Vanilla Server with very few plugins just the bare basics for gameplay A Semi Vanilla Server with a few plugins such as chest protection and fun team-based minigames for rewards possibly pvp arena for those who want to fight? A mix of everything, see below Another option I contemplated (bare with me on this one), getting a modded server that has extra monsters/animals you can tame/ride like horses etc and machinery but having a spawn built with portals, these portals will be as follows. Portal to outside of spawn for modded world building (this allows access to all the mods and the entirety of the content) Portal to a Vanilla only map, this is an entire world separate to the modded map with no extra ores/content which you can build in and do as you wish as if playing vanilla you are free to traverse between the worlds and (depending on your votes) can either transfer items from one to the other or have completely separate inventories for each to prevent contamination A Portal to a bonus "Denser Ores" area as some sort of reward for contributing towards SHS or helping out the server etc? (this one is debatable) perhaps just a world for mining to spare the main overworlds? A Portal which leads to a separate "Creative" area where people will have empty inventories and cannot take stuff in or out from the world, in here people can claim a "Plot" of land (controlled via the plugin and a command) within which they can build whatever they please. A Portal leading to a PVP arena, for those who want to fight/pummel each other to death with a shovel! A Portal leading to a team-oriented Capture-The-Flag based game A Portal leading to a team-based "Mob-Arena", in this arena players choose from 4-5 classes and are given a set inventory (like an RPG) from there when a round begins all players are teleported into an arena and pit against 20 waves of enemies with checkpoints at specific intervals giving rewards for the efforts. (this is customizable so we can always add new challenges and rewards to keep things fun) Possibly shops? and a plugin called factions which allows for areas of the map to be claimed by factions created and managed by the players, land can be purchased with in-game currency and fought over for overall glory (Meh just figured some might like team based PVP) As you can see there are a variety of options, and many many more available (just take a look at plugins.bukkit.org) but I want to get an idea of what you guys think about all this and how we should approach it? Obviously with the mix of everything approach people get to choose what they want to do and are not restricted to any one mode of play, if we decide to allow carrying of items from one to the other (debatable between you folks) then we essentially have a HUGE building area with which to expand and create. OH! one more minor detail, by default one of the mods enhances the difficulty within the nether... the reason for this is that it adds "Nether ores" these ores when mined (volatile be careful!) give double the ingots when smelted and are thus worth the risk and more of a challenge to get hold of compared to the overworld. Soooo let me know what you all think and discuss ideas etc here, obviously with a 4-6GB server and infinite storage/bandwidth we have quite a few options to choose from so dig around find some nice stuff and collaborate on what you guys would like most an example of a few mods can be found below Industrial Craft (Machinery for automation) Basics of Industrialcraft (video) Ender Storage Iron Chests (Bigger chest spaces) Tekkit Lite Pack (Click Modlist/watch the video for a basic idea) More Creatures (Horses/Elephants/Snakes) check the page for more info! I know at least 3 people who would play. Me, nate, and alpha. We were griefed and raided again last night and I refuse to go back to that server becaseu staff won't punish the guy for it, even though the rules clearing say "no griefing. no raiding." mhmm, myself and my bro will play obviously .... of course at the moment that is just 5 people haha (although I suppose I have 3-5 others I could grab) with a 6gb server we should easily handle 20-30+ doing intensive stuff without any problems. sooo if all goes well this weekend, I'll look into setting things up making it work and look pretty etc and we'll go from there. Need to discuss the rules/goals of the server... do you want to allow PVPing anywhere or have a specific PVP area?
