Contacting Flashbacker / Ep.3?

I'm interested in contacting Flashbacker to thank him for a very enjoyable game and to discuss the potential of a third episode.

After a short but thorough search, I have discovered that apparently neither are possible, as Flashbacker himself has yet to be heard from for years, and he has run out of funding to create a third episode.

Has anyone heard anything from or about him?

You are correct in that nobody has heard from him in around 7 years despite our efforts to contact him. We know absolutely nothing about the circumstances that resulted in his disappearance, nor do we have any idea about his financial (or even physical) well-being. There are all sorts of rumors floating around about what happened to FB, but as far as we can tell he simply lost interest and abandoned his game before finishing Episode 2. We certainly hope he's alright, but that is as much as we can really do at this point.

Yeah that's a real shame. I tried to get in contact with Mr.Spastic - The artist of the game's music (At least the intro song), and he only told me that;

Someone wrote me about this a long time ago. I don't think he ever contacted me to begin with.

I can't seem to find any email in regards to this game.

Hope you find who you are looking for

Feels really bad man because I was hoping that this series would do the same thing as the Gemcraft series. Gemcraft went on to have a steam game and became really popular.

I think that this series had the same if not more potential to go on.

Perhaps we can find another indie dev to take over the project and push forward on this series? If Flashbacker hasn't been heard of for 7 years, it may be safe to assume he has passed and moreover; would you care if one of your own works was taken over and improved exponentially with your name still on the front cover?
Said dev would have to be ready for a sudden reappearance of FB suddenly as he asks for 50% of the profits or such a request.

I just really want to see this series go forward. I enjoyed it thoroughly in both my childhood and early adulthood.

I have even made some sprites here, they could be of use, just that I hadn't finalized them yet (Note that I also have taken a few other cores designed by other peoples of this forum and add to my own palette as well, then modified some of them a bit)

Those actually look really nice.

Would I care if one of my works was taken over and "improved" with my name still on the front? Yes, I would care. I don't approve of people taking my characters or ideas and using them without even asking me first, nor do I want to be held accountable for something I had very little creative input over. Especially if they turn a profit using my stuff without permission.

I may not be FB, nor do I have access to FB's opinions, but just because we have no means of asking FB for permission to use his stuff it doesn't mean that we should run about as though his absence was a form of approval.

You mistake my opportunistic nature for disrespect. I would set it up in a way that allows FB to take over if he was to show is face once again.

It's not a perfect arrangement but it would give a lot of people a chance to enjoy a solid indie game, just like the original concept of indies.

I was merely expressing my opinion if it was one of my works. Even in a circumstance where I turn an unexpected profit and the material remained faithful to my intentions, I'd be both disappointed that someone used my intellectual property and irritated that people may think I had anything to do with the extraneous material besides providing source material.

I'm not saying that you can't or shouldn't try to make a continuation, like I said I'm not FB, I'm just imploring you to be cautious with someone else's works. Even giving credit and allowing FB to retake his works in the circumstance that he returns isn't necessarily going to result in positive reaction.

I see your point and it's well based. I'm sure it will be taken into consideration in the event I can locate the people with the required skills.

I would think making a heavily inspired fan game that isn't a direct copy or an "episode" would be fine. Using (visual) assets from the game may be kind of in a grey area though, especially if you plan to profit from it. The music is open source so it should be fine.
