Why wouldn't a magic user set up wards? Wards that detect when something is happening, and respond instantaneously and effectively?

Magic doesn't exist, therefore technology wins. If magic exists, the winner depends on what magic or technology is being used. Therefore it's a tie.

Magic explicitly defies physics, therefore no amount of technology, which is bounded by physics, can triumph in it's presence. If a barrier transports anything entering it to another planet, alternate dimension, or separate plane of existence, no armor piercing round, explosive or orbital bombardment will help stop it. If a concussive explosion can be willed into existence at any point the user chooses then no amount of armor or intercepting fire can protect against it. If magic were to exist technology would lose in a direct confrontation.

Magic has to be dumbed down in order for it to be competitive in tabletop games, rather than being the obvious decision, and even then it's still an easy decision. Why do 15d6+5 damage per round to a single creature with a rifle, or 10d6+15 damage per round to a single creature with a sword, when you can do 20d6 damage per round to 1000 creatures with waterfall of lava?

Magic without any rules is effectively godmodding, and the type of magic you are describing follows no system of rules whatsoever. Granted, technology can be used that way as well, although then it sort of defeats the purpose of technology, since it usually defies the laws of physics.

However, many series describe magic as having a system of rules, and in your typical fantasy setting, technology would out-class it in almost every respect. But it is hard to argue about, since it varies so greatly by series.

Of course, it would all depend on the "rules" of the magic of the series in question. Obviously, if it is one of those "Magic-users are gods!" series, then yes, magic would win. However, if it is one that actually is more modest and "realistic" about its power, I would be willing to bet that technology would win in most cases.

"Realistic" magic is an oxymoron. We should stop discussing this.

First off, magic is always a by-system basis, because without an anchor in reality you have a good chance OMNIPOTENCE LA GODMODDING will show up.

Now, if you'd like to try and piece together sentient thought from a wall of nedbentext, just ask. :D

"Sentient Thought in a wall of Nedben Text" is an oxymoron as well.

Precisely. If anyone feels like doing the impossible, just ask.
