So, if no one is smart enough to figure this out, I will shut down this thread and declare Spar the winner!

its { [ (8n+3) /3 ] Square root} /2 = 8[(n/3)+3]

What? I was talking about my problem, not yours.

Well I answered 1 inch, unless I misunderstood your wording.

If the 1- inch end breaks off from the 1000 foot rail because of expansion, to form a hypotenuse (wtf?) how far from the track is the rail? This is what I am thinking.

I am highly disappointed in you people. The answer to question 7 is 12.91 feet, by the way. That is why train tracks must allow for expansion of metal.

So, I will put another two questions. They will be slightly harder. If no one answers them, I will rant about your laziness and lock this thread.

QUESTION 8
The Imperial Battleship G.D.F. Fallen Sky fires a 50-terawatt laser at the Archaean Dreadnought Hypochondriac. However, due to an incompetent gunner, the laser is 1/2 of 1 degree off its target, and the laser instead hits and destroys the Imperial Cruiser G.D.F. Radian. If the G.D.F. Radian happens to be 50 kilometers from the Hypochondriac, how far is the Hypochondriac from the G.D.F. Fallen Sky?

QUESTION 9
If the speed of light is exactly 300,000 m/s, how long does it take for the laser to reach the G.D.F. Radian? YOU MUST ANSWER QUESTION 8 TO ANSWER QUESTION 9.

Wait a sec. I don't have enough info! I'll do it later.

No. You are overthinking this. Against my better judgement I will help you a tiny bit, just so someone other than Spar can show they have some mathematical skills.

I neglected to mention that the three ships form a right triangle, to make this problem stupidly simple.

Hypochondriac is 5,729.43 km from the Fallen Sky. However, it takes just over 19 (19.0988) seconds to strike the Radian. (I love trig. :))

EDIT: I assumed they were a right triangle.

SergeantRick is absolutely correct! For both questions. Of course, I made a mistake with the speed of light as well. In reality the speed of light is 300,000,000 m/s not 300,000 m/s as I stated, so in reality the laser would reach the Radian in 0.0190 seconds. I'll let it go, sine it was my mistake.
