Less wide?

... Still makes no sense to me. Why is having 45 words per line a bad thing? We're not writing essays. We're not being graded on how many lines each of our posts have. If anything I think that 4 lines at 45 words each is significantly less intimidating to read than 8 lines of 23 words each. This in turn means that I see less chatspeak as many people read what I post instead of looking at a wall of text and stating "too long; didn't read".

Another thing is that if I narrow the width of the page there would be a significantly larger portion of boring grey blocks on either side of the screen for those of us with widescreen resolutions. Why would you want massive blocks of grey on either side of the screen? I could understand it if we had a background that was interesting, but we don't.

Maybe those are the values you need to alter... And what's "auto" meant?

Also if you can Spar try to copied down our forum CSS into a notepad then...

It's a matter of:

1. Almost every other website is doing it now, so it looks weird when you come to one that doesn't.
2. When you read a book, the pages are narrow and tall. When you read a newspaper article, the columns are very narrow. With a widescreen monitor, if text fills the screen it's like reading something that has been printed landscape...it just doesn't work as well...

width:90%; Makes it to be 90% of screen width. However, if 90% exceeds
max-width:1000px; it will change down to 1000px (for those of us with high res widescreen). Also, if 90% is less than
min-width:300px; then the new width will be 300px.

margin:auto; is not related to the page width, but it does make the forum section centered.

So I noticed that somebody bumped it up to 1350, which actually looks quite nice. Then I noticed when I go to post that that is still as wide. Did some fiddling and have a solution:

Code:

#topic_viewer, .posting{
width:90%;
}

#topic_viewer, .posting, .topic{
max-width:1350px;
min-width: 300px;
margin:auto;
}

Just swap that out for what was just added and it should be sweet :)

Oh... So I could be able to do that for the admin... As long I get back on my laptop as I get access to the Admin CP.

Well I just implemented your CSS in a backup theme... Just have to check the other threads through to see if it looks fine before implement it to our real theme...

Also check our new Coreling Theme! I've decided to made it public. It's not complete through... I just need to change the text color...

And here is the CSS of our new theme:
It's pretty long...
There seems to be something a bit funny with the skin changer. Every time I try to change skin, I'm taken to some error page, but then when I load a new page the skin changes...

... The pages in a book are tall and narrow because the book is sturdier if you bind the longer edge of paper. Newspaper articles are tall and narrow because of the desire to put many articles close to the headlines, which increases the number of readers by appealing to many different audiences through the front page headlines. Computers have neither of those issues to contend with, thus I see no problem with it. Forums that have a thinner region to post in are usually either designed specifically for people with 800x600 resolution or often have sidebars with other links. As we have no such links we have no use for wide sidebars. However of the eight forums that I am a member of, this is actually the thinnest and if I knew how to change the margins so that they were only 3% of the screen's width in total I'd do that.

Spar: I never told anyone that they HAD t change it. It was merely a suggestion, based on the general way of the internet right now. Clearly somebody liked this suggestion and implemented it.

Also, if width is no issue, then why is it that when writes a letter or an essay that we write portrait style rather than landscape?

I personally much prefer the theme now. It does, however, have inconsistencies of width with stuff at the bottom of the page, but that's mostly because of the specific method used.

If it really bothers you, at the bottom of the page there is a "Choose a theme" box, the new Coreling theme looks quite nice, and has a width that is probably more to your liking. That, or the person who changed it may decide to change it back...who knows...

Update: Just saw a tread with a poll, it wasn't affected by the width making it look real odd...

New code would look like:

Code:

#topic_viewer, .posting, .poll{
width:90%;
}

#topic_viewer, .posting, .topic, .poll{
max-width:1350px;
min-width: 300px;
margin:auto;
}
