Right, is this still going? Not seen a post for a couple of days, and that's noooooo good.
But, yeah, I can handle the city's politics. Because I is politics nerd.
- The city itself is heavily Democratic (some precincts vote over 90% Democratic) and is home to a powerful, heavily entrenched political machine dominated by a few long-standing families (the Henderson family is currently the predominant political family, with one of the city's Representatives and the Mayor, Rupert Henderson IV, both being from it). Cross any of the major politicians, your political career is over and your nice new house will be bought on eminent domain for some new subway station; get in their good books, contracts for city business, appointments to important committees and invitations to big-name parties will soon follow. The city is a hotbed of cronyism, corruption, nepotism and easily-blackmailed politicians.
- The Mayor, Rupert Henderson IV (the second Rupert Henderson in a row, and the third overall, to be Mayor), is gaffe-prone, outspoken, corrupt and considered very likely to run for higher office in the near future, and is merely using the office of Mayor as a stepping stone. The powerless Deputy Mayor, Anthony Balatka, is a bookish Czech-born businessman and former State Senator, who comes from a less privileged background and is less corrupt than his superior.
- As a state, it's no better. While more competitive electorally than the city, the state is also a hotbed of corruption. Three out of four of the past three Governors are in jail (one for selling off nominations to important state offices to the highest bidder, another for every corruption charge under the sun, another for doing inappropriate things with the daughter of his Lt. Governor), and the other one was assassinated. The current Governor, Republican Gaylord Leroy Snyder, a former attorney and war veteran, is a self-styled reformer and anti-corruption crusader who succeeeded Rudolph Harris, fellow Republican and nephew of the state's Senior Senator, after he was assassinated, but he's only been in office for a few months so he has plenty of time to be implicated in a scandal.
- The state's two Senators aren't much better; Republican Senior Senator Duncan Rutherford, is, despite his advanced age, an expert politician, debater and campaigner who has been in the Senate for a total of 32 years and Congress for 40. Despite his good reputation and several key legislative successes, he is really an opportunist, who flip-flopped on everything from prohibition to the New Deal to World War II. The Democratic Junior Senator Andrew Larkin, currently half-way through his first term, is an all-words no-action showhorse who arguably only got the job because his successful father (a rich businessman) pulled some strings for him.
- The city's newspapers, big corporations, unions and more powerful criminal outfits all have big impacts on the elections; while a Democratic victory is almost guaranteed in any city-wide election, their true power is shown in their ability to influence the primaries.
