Name: Betty Sherwood

Age: 26

Hobbies: window shopping, writing, movies

Occupation: Society reporter

Appearance: Betty is your stereotypical Midwestern farm girl. Her round face is framed by blond shoulder length hair, which is styled similar to the actress Rita Hayworth. Wavy, with her bangs curled off her face to one side. She usually wears make up, dark red lips, a light blush on her cheekbones. Her blue eyes are framed by perfectly arched eyebrows. Betty is petite at 5’0” and 115 pounds. She dresses to accentuate her curves. When working Betty favors knee to calf length dresses in solid colors or stripes, accompanied by a hat and small heels. At home Betty favors pants and a blouse or

Bio: Betty spent her childhood learning a lot of skills that help her little in the big city. Betty is the second oldest of eight children, although only five of them survived past infancy. After losing two sons in infancy, Betty’s father decided that Betty would be perfect to help him out with the daily farm chores. As a result Betty took on much more of the farm work than her three sisters. While her mother made sure that Betty could cook and clean the house, Betty was much more often found out in the field mending fences and plowing fields. Due to this Betty’s elementary schooling was spotty, though her mother tried to make up for this by reading to her children every evening. Betty also took to writing in a journal. Betty’s journal usually contained stories and characters, often taken from the travel books she’d checked out from the library.

Betty was in junior high when her youngest sibling was born, finally the boy her father wanted. As her father’s attention switched from her to her brother Betty was able to fully focus on school. She began to excel in reading and writing, but her math skills still fell behind those of her classmates. During high school, she became infatuated with the movies. Most of her free time, was used to escape into different worlds for an hour or two. These movies offered more fuel for her stories, and they become more elaborate as she continued to write. Due to her early experiences Betty often had much more in common with the boys in her community than the girls. Betty didn’t date much in high school as she often dressed in more masculine attire and oversized hand me downs, which kept the boys from seeing her as anything but their childhood friend. She finished high school just as WWII started.

To help raise money for her family and escape the small town that she felt had cast her into a specific role. She quickly found Mrs. Watson and her boarding house. Mrs. Watson took Betty under her wing and helped her to dress to show off her assets. Through Mrs. Watson, Betty discovered a love of shopping and would often make a detour on her way home to walk past the huge shop windows.

Betty was able to land a job at a major newspaper within a few weeks of arriving in town. With many of their field reporters joining the war effort, Betty was assigned as a field reporter, something she found she loved. In the big city she continued her passion for movies and writing stories.

As a field reporter Betty covered many of the biggest stories of the war and was sent to cover the huge victory parades as the war ended on both fronts. However, as the soldiers returned home Betty found herself receiving less and less lucrative assignments. While her past work allows her to still have a position at the paper, she has now been relegated to handling flower shows and society luncheons.

Betty is upset about the fact that the soldiers are returning and have taken her job. And upset about the fact that she’s upset. Many of the men from her hometown fought in the war and she considers all soldiers heroes. She has been struggling lately with coming to terms with this, especially upon meeting one of the GIs that has caused her exile. She was tempted to quit the paper all together and return to the family farm, though that idea holds almost the same appeal as being a society columnist. The freedoms of living on her own finally one out and she’s now determined to work as hard as it takes to get noticed.

Reason for playing: To regain the respect and recognition she had during the war.

Hello, Arscapi. Points for being first. Like what you've got here, but Betty is Denied pending a mild bit of revision.

Mainly, I would like to see a little delving into how her life is after losing her position. Is she bitter? Has she made several unsuccessful attempts to get back her station? How does this happening more or less color her life now?

Like what you've got here so far, and looking forward to seeing how the rest turns out.
