How do I avoid copyright music problems

Hi,

A video I made was cut to three different music tracks. Youtube removed the audio from it because one of those tracks was not under their agreement, the other two were fine.
Is there a way to keep the video as intended with original music - some people say crediting the music on screen is enough, some say that doesn't matter and won't work - what's the truth? I can't find any details about that on the youtube site....Also, how do I avoid it happening again..... is there a way to look up a track to see if I can use it or not before I start editing a video? That would stop a lot of disappointment later on after finishing editing!
