Paranoid Schizophrenic!!!!!
Okay, I'm back off my vacation, so here is the next snippet. :)

Clark let the Ford idle in first gear as a set of lights changed from green to red and he was forced to stop. The car obeyed and patiently waited for his next command, its mechanized construction never understanding just how powerful its driver truly was.

Chloe watched from the rear, where she always travelled with Ryan when her husband was behind the wheel. It wasn’t anything to do with his driving, but that she never wanted to be far from her son’s side when there was no reason to be. Baby Ryan hadn’t had the easiest entry into the world, and Chloe wanted to make sure the rest of his life was plain sailing all the way. The problem was, something had been on her mind now that she just had to get off, party or not.

“Clark, did you ever think that maybe Ryan might well, be a little like you?” It was hard to just come out and say have your gifts, even after all this time.

Clark concentrated on the evening traffic, and as the lights changed hung a left as he spotted the towering plaza in the distance. It didn’t exactly occur to him just what Chloe was suggesting, at least not at first. “I sure hope he’s like me, I mean I’d hate for him to have his mom’s prying instincts. Not to mention the way you wrinkle your nose when…”

Chloe poked him from the rear of the car and wished they weren’t out in public, so that she could inflict more teasing punishments on her indestructible husband. Instead, she sighed. “I don’t mean that you goof! I mean, what if Berman was wrong and he has your abilities? It’s just lately he seems so knowing about everything. I can’t put my finger on it, but there’s something there.”

“You know that can’t be possible,” Clark slid the car into the underground lot, and parked in the spot Lex had so kindly had reserved for him. It looked kind of cute to have the family name somewhere special. Clark grinned at the wall plate bearing the name ‘Kent’ and then hopped from the car to open Chloe’s door, “Besides, even if it could happen, I would never want it to.”

Chloe looked at him knowingly as she plucked Ryan from his seat. Clark would never want their kid to have the uncertain life he had grown up with. The Kents had given him everything humanly possible, but there had always been the fear of discovery, and worse, the fear of what he would become. Things had turned out well, all things considered, although Clark had had a few close calls with his life against some pretty unscrupulous bad guys.

“I’m not saying I want him to have your gifts, but I think it’s gone beyond that now. Maybe we should get Berman to at least run some tests?”

Clark slammed the door and as he hit the lock button on the car’s remote, Chloe knew he was upset. He loved Ryan dearly, and there was no way he wanted his kid to be afraid of the future as he had once been.

“I’m not having him poked in some lab, Chlo!” He unconsciously took the baby from his mom’s arms and cradled him protectively. Then in a softer voice he added, “I never want Ryan to wonder where he’s from like I did. I never want him not to have answers, and most of all I don’t want him to have to live in fear of being discovered…”

Chloe didn’t want to have to say more, but it had to be told just like it was, “Don’t you think I want the same things for him? The problem is, if I’m right we need to know, so we can have all the answers ready for him when he’s old enough, and protect him just like your parents did you!”

Clark sighed. Why did going to parties usually end up in an argument? He rolled his eyes, and was about to try and come up with a jovial answer to break some of the wall of ice that had formed between them, but his sensitive hearing took over his senses without warning.

Somewhere above, he perceived a clatter that his auditory channels normally associated with gunfire. He honed in further, hoping to verify the sound, but as abruptly as it began it was gone. Maybe it was something else? Without further thought he handed Ryan back to Chloe and attempted to scan the upper stories, just in case. Strangely, he couldn’t x-ray beyond the tenth floor.

“Clark, is something wrong?” Chloe had seen him go into this mode before, and usually it scared her beyond words. The question was why would he be so alert at a party?

“I thought I heard gunfire,” he answered truthfully, “but I guess it could have been out on the street…”

Chloe pouted. “You just can’t take a break from saving the world can you? I mean, now you’re even making excuses to go off and catch some bad guy rather than have a well earned night off with your family!” She kept a straight face, waiting for his ‘farmboy’ innocent and wounded reaction.

The deception worked like a charm and Clark forgot the noise for a second, more fearful of Chloe’s wrath.

“Chlo, you know it’s not like that!”

As he drew nearer she punched him with her free hand and then signalled they catch the elevator up to the party. “I was just joking. I know your work has to come first, and I’m proud of you more than words can say.” She kissed him lightly on the cheek as they entered the lift, and under the security camera’s watchful gaze he found himself blushing. Some guard of Lex’s is probably watching all this and picking fun at us two for behaving like we were still in high school!

Chloe sensed it too, and managed to stop her teasing just long enough for the elevator to ping, signalling their arrival at the correct floor. Clark waited for the doors to peal back with a sudden sense of trepidation. Normally, he was the typical gentleman who let ladies go first, but tonight he put his hand back and blocked Chloe’s path.

“Me first.” Was all the explanation he would give.

Chloe looked confused, but clutched Ryan that tiny bit tighter as his dad entered what should have been a party in full swing. Instead, as Clark stepped into the dully-lit room his eyes became wide with shock and horror at what was transpiring.

Blood pooled on Lex’s lush carpets as if the sky had opened up and rained in the fluid of life. Impulsively, Clark whirled around to push Chloe and his child back in the elevator, but as he turned he realized it was all too late for their escape.

Thoughts of his parents, his sister, and Daryl spun through his mind like the web of some giant tarantula. This was not fair, how could he protect them, even if they were all still alive? The off duty detective pushed away the despair, intent on dealing with the situation before him first.

Chloe had routinely followed him out into the room and was now being held by some mundane looking henchman. He held a short nosed automatic to her skull, and grinned as Clark spun to face him.

“Long time no see, Kent.” The inflection in his voice told Clark their previous meeting had not been a good one, even though he had no recollection of ever meeting the man before, let alone arresting him.

“I don’t even know you,” Kent’s gaze watched how closely the gun was to Chloe’s temple, “is all of this because of me?” He gestured to the carnage behind them, and cringed as he once again wondered about his family and friends. Did this guy do all this just to get payback for something I’ve done?

The man seemed to find the comment amusing. “Don’t flatter yourself. You’ve caused me enough suffering in the past, but this was never just about you. You being here was simply an added bonus I didn’t want to miss out on.”

Clark gulped. If he had no clue how he had antagonized this individual, it would be hard to try and negotiate with him. And I can’t exactly use my powers in front of all these people. Not that I dare anyway, that muzzle is far too near to Chloe’s head to risk any kind of move.

Clark raised his hands, signalling that he was the villain’s prisoner. There was no point in being the hero unless he could save lives, not endanger them. “If it’s not me you’re here for, then you could at least tell me who it is?”

“Oh, the classic get me to tell you everything and then talk me down scenario?” The man pushed Chloe forward, roughly urging her to join a group of survivors near the large glass windows to their left, “I don’t think I need to tell you anything. After all it wouldn’t be so much fun if I did. Suffice to say I have something special planned for you and several other individuals in this room that still draw breath.”

Clark followed as his wife and son were harshly shoved the last few steps to those who still lived. Chloe tripped on something as she joined the group, and knowing what it was she dare not look down to get a glimpse of what had made her stumble. Clark reached out to grab her, but as she steadied herself he winced at the bloodied body she had almost fallen over. Guiltily, he felt thankful that the glazed, dead eyes he saw didn’t belong to anyone he knew.

In the crowd, the detective heard a familiar voice and sighed with relief at his mother’s concerned words. “Chloe! Are you alright?” Martha pushed forward, hugging her daughter-in-law and checking over baby Ryan like she was a tigress defending her cub. “Clark?” After a moment she looked up at her son with a strange expression, and her eyes were reddened as if she’d recently sobbed.

“I’m fine, Mom. What about everyone else?” Clark was already scanning the throng of people in front of him. Some were panic-stricken; others lay on the floor, moaning as their blood ebbed away before them. Finally, as Martha answered he saw what he had been searching for.

At the back, a small party of his friends and family had gathered. They either stood or lay huddled together in a solemn circle. None of them spoke much, and as Clark saw more, he knew why. It looked like Pete had taken a round through his forearm, but it was just a flesh wound; he would live. Behind him, someone had not been so lucky. Berman was hovering over them attentively, and when Clark let his eyes x-ray straight through her to view her patient, his knees almost buckled on the spot.

“No!” Hatred for the stranger who had caused this burned deep in his stomach, twisting and knotting until Clark wanted to turn and slam him through the nearest wall and down the deepest elevator shaft. “How could you…?”

The villain raised a brow, but didn’t smirk this time. “Quiet easily, and if you like what I do to kids, you’ll just love what I do to babies if you don’t do exactly what I tell you.” The gun in his hand wafted slowly towards Chloe and little Ryan, who amazingly appeared to be sleeping through it all.

Martha quiet until now, tugged on her son’s arm, beseeching him not to do anything rash. “Clark, please do as he asks, I don’t want another one of my children hurt here.” He almost pushed her off, so great was his anger, but he kept control somehow.

“If anything happens to Karyn…”

“You’ll what? Shoot me? I know you don’t carry a gun, Kent. And I also know you won’t be in any hurry to use any of the other abilities at your disposal, not in front of everyone here.” As if to prove his point, he holstered his weapon and abruptly yanked Ryan from his mother’s arms.

Chloe screamed in rage, not wanting this foul piece of scum to even lay a hand on her slumbering child. She lunged forward, punching at the beast that had stolen Ryan, but the rest of the guards in the room swiftly restrained her, pushing her back to Clark’s side.

Their leader cradled the baby and then looked up at its two parents, glowering like some pathetic kid who had just stolen for the first time. “Now then, Detective Kent. If you want the kid to live, you better follow me…”

Okay, I sooo need a break from this....

Clark’s eyes glowed as if he were about to let of an intense burst of heat vision, but somehow he quelled the desire. Instead, he looked back once to the rest of the people in the room, his expression telling them he had not finished here, not by a long shot. Then he turned back to his tormentor. “Let’s go.”

The leader, who so far no one even recognized nodded and beckoned to his nearest minion. “Mezrich, I want you and the others to stay here until I give the word. If anyone causes trouble, don’t negotiate. This isn’t a movie, kill them.”

Mezrich had been hoping his boss gave that particular order. It had become extremely boring planting devices and watching Kent’s wife. Now, he could have some fun before his getaway, because with the look on some of the crowd’s faces, they would surely rebel before the night was over.

“Don’t worry, we can handle anything this bunch of rich boys and misfits throw at us.” He grinned, and his superior almost wretched at the toothless, repugnant smile.

“Just stay at your posts till I’m ready!” The leader looked back to Clark and suddenly felt uneasy. The big guy was taking all this too calmly. Needing a sense of control once more he used his free hand to redraw his automatic and wave towards an emergency stairwell. “We’ll be taking the stairs up a few stories. Once you came up I took the liberty of disabling all the elevators.”

Clark coolly headed for the door, trying to scan up the steps with his x-ray vision again for any possible problems. Once out onto the stairwell though, he soon found he could see nothing but a black void, as if he were looking into lead. What’s going on here? Why would Lex have lead in the walls of a brand new building? He only wished he’d had chance to ask the billionaire senator that very question. As it was, he hopped lithely up the bland concrete steps, following the lead of a very mysterious tormentor and his captive child.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Jonathan Kent couldn’t quite believe what was happening. One minute they had all been laughing and joking, blissfully unaware, and the next several people lay dead or dying. The farmer thought about the last word, ‘dying’. Was Karyn dying as he stood helpless? Was Clark about to take a trip upstairs with some madman who could hurt him too?

He whirled around, wanting to shake Berman and tell her to at least do more for his daughter, but he knew she was doing all she could already.

They had still been seated at their table when it had happened. The shooting had begun without warning, and Karyn had been one of the first to be hit. Miraculously, none of the adults had been hurt in the first volley. At least not in their group, although Pete had gotten himself shot later for trying to punch out one of the guards.

Jonathan looked across to Pete now. He sat cradling his arm and talking to Lex. Neither had really said much since they had realized Karyn had been injured, but then neither had Martha. She had acted so composed so far, and he had been the one so shocked and shaken. It was as if their roles had abruptly reversed. In the past Jonathan had always been the rock who stood firm and kept it together while Martha tended to panic. He thought about it. All these years I’ve protected my family, and it still comes to this? Am I to stand here now and let my past labors be for nothing?

The old and much lamented Kent anger was rising now; shooting up from whatever dark place it had been hidden the past ten years. Jonathan felt the fatherly distress he was feeling turn to something much more as he looked at the guards they had been left with. They aren’t taking the rest of my family, not while I still breathe.

Feeling a new sense of urgency, he casually ambled to Paul Stillwater’s side, leaving Martha behind to help tend Karyn and look after Daryl. What he was about to propose was both foolhardy and dangerous, and yet somehow he suspected the young cop would be of the same mind.

“Paul, I think we need to do something about this situation. I can’t just sit by and let everyone become lambs to the slaughter.” Jonathan nodded towards Mezrich as the off duty sheriff tilted his head, silently indicating he was on the same wave length. “Did you notice their boss used their names?”

Stillwater inhaled, “That means they’re using phony names, are going to kill us anyway, or that they’re plain dumb and their leader is about to kill them right along with us.” He offhandedly checked where each guard was situated and he continued, “Personally, I’m guessing if it was the latter they’d have worn masks to hide their faces, or there is no real point to a fake name.”

“Which suggests either of the other two options means we’re as good as dead if we don’t act.” Jonathan finished the thought for him, and shivered. There was that ugly word again. Why does everything have to come back to death?

As if to bring the point home even further, the two men who had been restraining Chloe finally let her loose. It was a huge mistake, and she immediately resumed her barrage of punches on their second in command, Mezrich. One of the guards raised his weapon, fully intending to carry out their leader’s order and shoot the woman, but Mezrich stopped him.

“Now don’t be too hasty there,” he ran a hand along Chloe’s face and let her see his bare empty gums, “I spent so long watching this one, I want some fun with her before we leave.”

Chloe at last identified him as her stalker. “Why you!” She lifted a knee fully intent on him feeling her wrath, but the ex-con was more adroit than she had counted on, and he deflected the blow with ease.

Jonathan lunged forward and was only stopped from joining in the fray by a quick thinking yank back by Stillwater. “They want us to start a fuss, and we will,” he whispered in the farmer’s ear as he pulled him from certain death, “but we’ll start it on our terms, when we know we have a chance…”

“I’ll second that.” Lex had crept up behind them as Stillwater tried to calm Jonathan, “Lois is up for it too, but we have to act quickly. I don’t know why, but I sense our bad guy has something up his sleeve for all of us, including his own goons.”

The billionaire who had taken off his jacket and rolled up his cuffs glanced towards Daryl. He daren’t tell Jonathan, but there was more too. Daryl had ‘seen’ something about Clark and Ryan, and although he wasn’t being very specific, it wasn’t anything remotely good.

“I have my reserve 45 in my ankle holster…” Stillwater kept his eyes fixed on the bad guys nearest, “I think I can take those two one way or another.”

Lex raised a brow appreciatively, somewhat surprised that the small town sheriff had been audacious enough to bring a weapon into his top security building. “I’ve told everyone not involved to stay as far back as possible. Pete’s going to try and get Chloe out of trouble, maybe Lana can convince her to stay down then, and I think at least one of us ought to go after Clark…”

“Hey, what are you guys getting so chatty about?” Mezrich grabbed the rugged Uzi that hung on a strap over his shoulder and pointed it at the group. He swiftly forgot tantalizing Kent’s wife in search of better game, and his finger began to ease back automatically on the trigger.

It was then that it came out of the blue, and so surprising that almost the entire ensemble, good and bad fell to their knees. The floor rocked with the explosion, each aftershock bringing rubble and broken glass to the already shattered party. Mezrich fell forward, the Uzi he carried clattering to the ground as he hit the bloodied carpet with a thud. He shook himself. This can’t be happening. All the charges were meant to go off together, not here not like this!

So far, only one incendiary device had detonated on the floor below them. Already fire systems should be kicking in to douse the flames and acrid smoke, but they didn’t. Glass exploded from windows, showering the ground below with shards shaped like deadly pointed stalactites.

Lex staggered to his feet first, seizing the opportunity for a surprise revolt, despite the new developing situation. He pulled Stillwater and Jonathan to their feet next and gave his trademark wry smile. “They say fortune favors the bold. Shall we see if it’s true, gentlemen…?”
