I've been wondering -- because I obviously have too much time on my hands (ha!) -- what was Jonathan like in high school? I mean, think about it. We know he was a quarterback on the football team, but I think it's safe to say he couldn't have been the kind of Smallville High jock we've seen so far, who would tie people up in cornfields. It isn't in him. He'd be more likely to sneak out to the cornfield afterward and help the poor guy get loose. Also, you'd think a quarterback would have a magnetic, everybody-look-at-me personality, and would probably keep right on being that way after high school, but Jonathan is a very self-effacing kind of guy. And if memory serves me, we've seen that one or two ex-jocks were kind of bitter about being has-beens (and Whitney was dreading becoming a has-been), but Jonathan seems quite content with his life. So . . . was he always like he is now and just an unusual jock (my preferred theory), or did he have to learn some lessons before he got to be the way he is now? And if he was always this way, was it because of his parents (like Clark)? We know a little about them from "Reaper" and "Relic," and we know his relationship with his dad kind of went downhill -- didn't he even defy his dad by trying out for the Metropolis football team? (Or did he just threaten to? I can't remember.) But we also know they had some good times too and that Jonathan loved and respected him. And by the way, what did Jonathan see in that catty little Nell? She's not bad-looking -- not drop-dead gorgeous, but not bad-looking -- but was he shallow enough back then to see nothing but her looks? (Of course, teenage boys do have a tendency that way!) Smallvillian, you can see where I'm going with this, can't you? :) I would LOVE to see a fan fiction on this subject -- and you know I ain't gonna be the one to write it. (As I told you, I have no talent for fiction. I took a fiction-writing course in college, so I know this for a fact. I can come up with ideas, but then I can't do anything with them.) Would you be interested in taking up the challenge? You've written so many Jonathan-centered stories that I think you could do something really good with this. Of course, I know you'll want to finish "Measure" first (and I'm dying to read the rest of it), but I thought that afterwards, this might be something with which you could have some fun. Let me know what you think! (This is the second idea for a story I've given you, isn't it? I've got to get over this habit of bossing people around!!) |

I think it's an interesting idea that I hadn't considered before :D Just give me some time to brainstorm and see if I can come up with something. :) |

I'll say one thing for "Legacy": It gave us some more background on Jonathan and his family. Very useful in case you decide to go ahead with this story, Smallvillian! We now know that . . . 1) Hiram was very stubborn, probably even more so than Jonathan. He was also wise and strong. 2) He and Jonathan fought all the time. (Or "duked it out," to use Jonathan's expression. :) ) 3) Jonathan thinks that he wasn't the son that Clark is. (Of course, he also thinks he isn't the father Hiram was, so maybe his opinion here isn't entirely trustworthy!) 4) According to the dates on the gravestone and the date that "Relic" took place, Hiram was 37 when Jonathan was born. (Maybe this has something to do with their many differences of opinion? By the time J. was in his teens, it may have been hard for Hiram to remember what being a teenager was like.) And he died when Jonathan was 19. Which seems kind of strange, since I'm pretty sure Martha met Hiram (see "Relic" again) and I thought Jonathan and Martha had first met when they were older than 19. But I could easily be wrong on that point. Put it all together, and it seems that Jonathan did indeed have a bit of maturing to do as he grew into the man we all know and love. But I still maintain that he was not your typical Smallville High jock -- and I suspect that he's being at least a little too hard on his younger self. |

That graveyard scene in Legacy was just sooo sad!! Awwwwwwwwwww! Poor Jon! Cant' believe he doesn't think he's been a great father to Clark! Not sure how old Martha and Jon were when they met, but it was in a university class (we found that out in that Nic. flower epi), so guess it could have been in 1st or 2nd year, which would have made them 18 or 19... |

Okay, THIS is weird. . . . I was just looking at "Exodus" again (coming up with another question for the quiz thread) and caught Jonathan saying his father gave him a compass on his wedding day?! So either we have a very early marriage here -- gee, no wonder Martha's father was upset -- or (gasp) a pretty big lapse in continuity! |

Well, considering how bad they goofed up on Clark's age, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a continuity glitch. |

How'd they goof up on Clark's age? I must have missed it. |

Well, there is a big debate about how old he is. Alot of people, myself included, say he turned 17 in Calling. But others say that was his 16th bday. We have a thread about it in the Clark Kent forum. I don't feel like reposting it all here I'm too lazy!
:p Here's a link to the thread: http://s4.invisionfree.com/Smallvillevirtu...p?showtopic=103 |

Oh, I see. Thanks! As for Jonathan and Martha's wedding -- maybe we could explain the discrepancy this way: His father left the compass for his mother to give him when he got married. Yes, of course, that's what he must have meant. Don't you love how we always give the "Smallville" team the benefit of the doubt when they mess up? :) |
