What do you think Jonathan's biggest fear is? |

I'd have to say someone taking Clark away from him and Martha and losing his family. In "Tempest" and "Vortex" he made comments about how he didn't want Nixon to break up the family and that he would not let Roger turn his son into a speciman to be studied. |

I think Jonathan's biggest fear came out in "Rogue" when Phelan said he'd see to it that Clark's chance at a normal life would be over. And used the charming phrase "freak in a jar." Losing Clark of course is a huge fear for him -- his family is more important to him than anything, even his own life -- but I think this fear might be even bigger. |

Good examples!
:) Now I have to think about my own question. Hmmmmmmmm. Well, I would say that Jonathan's biggest fear is that he would fail Clark. Not protect him well enough or guide him well enough--basically what he would consider a failure as a father. Jonathan puts a lot on himself and I think Legacy showed some of his darkest thoughts--that he has not been a good father, that he wasn't the steadfast rock he should have been in Exile. Knowing that Clark is such an exceptional child and needs so much more careful handling and guidance because he *is* the most powerful being on the planet must be a heavy burden even though we know Jonathan wouldn't trade it for anything. It must take its toll every now and then. |

Oh, good one! This is what worries me a bit about season 4 (well, lots of things do, but this in particular) -- that when he wakes up, he's going to feel like such a failure because all his best efforts couldn't keep Clark from getting sucked through that wall. |

Yes, I think he needs a big hug, poor guy! And I think Legacy showed more than anything that he is not as sure of himself as he often pretends to be, that he projects that image because he wants Martha and Clark to feel safe and protected. For an instant, we saw that facade drop away big time and it was scary for everyone. (Even us!) |

I may be slightly off (or I may be mega off, ya'll tell me) Do you think maybe that Jonathan is afraid that he might turn into Jor-el? I seemed to get that impression in Legacy. About how he was the father that forced Clark to run away, and the father that turned his back on Clark when he needed him most. He sees how Jor-El is, and he knows that JE would probably do the same thing if situations were reversed. Am I confusing anyone? ~Livvie~ |

You make a good point that Jonathan could fear being too controlling over Clark, much as JE is. That could be the reason for his reaction in--oh, the one with Lana almost being told the secret--I forget the name. But he backs off and allows Clark to decide what he wants to do, realizes that there has to come a time when he starts to let Clark make those decisions for himself. Good observation :) |

Hey, we finally got an answer to this question! They incorporated a lot of what we said here -- that people would come to take Clark away and experiment on him, and that Jonathan wouldn't be able to protect Clark. And it was Martha's biggest fear too, which makes sense. I WISH we could have seen their nightmare scene, even though I'm sure it would have freaked a lot of us out! |

Too bad we didn't actually see it! I think it would have filled up those five minutes we were jipped out of and probably would have been the most interesting. I had totally forgotten about this question. Good memory! |
