ok heres a question. how many of you read the comics??? do u guys read the "Superman" comics or the "Smallville" comics?? it was funny cuz i was goin through my old dresser yesterday and back when i had that dresser i was really into comics. and when i was going through the bottom drawer and i found this comic of the worlds finest Batman and Superman. so i started reading it and all. and it turned out that in this very comic Superman takes Batman to Smallville to show it to him. and they are standing on top of this building and Superman says there goes Pete Ross one of my oldest friends. and it shows him jogging. but guess what?? Pete Ross is white!!! i started crackin up. then they fly over Smallville High and Clark says that he was the high school hero on the football field and the high school nerd off it. im just like hold on. i thought he didnt get to play football. then they fly over a gorge and Clark says he almost got the nerve to kiss Lana there once. it was so cool to see how it compared to the show!!! |

Don't mess with JS

I don't read comics -- nothing against them, they just never appealed to me. But that particular one sounds like fun reading! I never heard of someone being the high school nerd AND the high school hero at the same time. Must have been an interesting experience for Clark. :D |

I've never read comics. In fact I was never a Supes fan before Smallville. So, I guess anything is possible if I had the time to read them! I know Wayne who posts here occasionally is a big comic fan, so if you ever want to know anything about that side of the Supes universe, he's the guy to ask :D |

I never read the old comics before either. My dad just said that he used to have comics, but my grandmother went through his room and threw them all out. |

Before Smallville, I watched Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and I saw parts of the Superman movies, but I wasn't a huge fan. I haven't read the comics either. I just know a few random facts from the comics after looking stuff up online. |

Can't Stay Away

I've been reading the Smallville comics. They are pretty good. I have also read pre- and post-crisis Superman. Not sure which I like best..probably post. There were a lot of good stories there. But GL will always be my favorite! |

A Mild mannered historian...

As Kittsbud said, I do have some background in the comics and, if no one minds, I like to share it with you. For the better part of 35 years (between 1967 and 2002), I collected comics in one form or another. Currently, I have pretty much gotten completely away from them. I still keep up with the characters, various story-archs, and special event stories; but I don't collect like I used to. At the peak, I had over 15,000 comics. The most collectible of my collection was an original copy of Superman Comics #4 from the 1940s. You'll notice I didn't say "valuable" when I described this book. That's because of two things: 1. I considered every single book in my collection valuable in some way or another. Even if it was just one of those books that didn't really have that great of art or writing, it was valuable to me in that it made me appreciate those books which DID have great art or writing. Also, I considered every book valuable because they served their purpose of entertaining me for that time it took as I read each one (sometimes over and over). If it weren't for my interest in comic books, I truly doubt I would be writing these words today. In fact, I'm certain of it. 2. The other reason I didn't use the term "valuable" is because about twenty-five years and 12,000 comics into my collection, I learned that all those price guides and grade rating systems don't really amount to a hill of beans when it comes down to the ACTUAL value of a single book or an entire collection. As with any "collectible", comics are no different; they are only as valuable as the price someone is willing to pay for them. Let me reiterate that so everyone is clear: Comic books are only as valuable as the price someone is willing to pay for them regardless of what any price guide says. This had a chilling effect on me when I learned it. But then I realized that the value I got from those comics didn't have anything to with dollars. It had everything to do with entertainment and enlightenment. I learned alot from comic books. I learned to read, write, and draw; I learned about science, history, literature, government; and I learned about marketing and sales. Those are things that cannot be replaced by a few dollars and I'd never expect to. But as we get into the full swing of comic convention season; I want all you young collectors who are buying the hot new title this month to remember this lesson I've learned. Enjoy your books, they're irreplacable; but don't buy them and then wrap them in three layers of mylar without even reading the story. That's not what they're for. Anyway, I've got to go now, I'll continue this rant in a little while. |

I've never really collected comics, although I do tend to buy the odd 'KITT' related item  I can relate exactly to what you're saying though, Wayne, because I don't buy them because they're collectible. I buy them because they bring back great childhood memories that I can never replace with money or anything else! Don't buy things to wrap up, take pleasure in what you have bought :) Oh, you've just reminded me of Samuel L Jackson in the movie 'Unbreakable' he's kinda obsessed with comic books in a anti-hero kind of way  |
