Since suspect just aired--- what do you think Jonathan was like in high school? :) |

Oooh, one of my favorite subjects! :bounce: I still want to see a fanfic about this. Maybe that's the one you and I could collaborate on! This topic interests me so much because we know Jonathan was a high school jock -- a quarterback, in fact. Someone you'd think would enjoy the spotlight and soak up attention. But adult Jonathan is a self-effacing, humble man who doesn't "need to live vicariously" through his son. He doesn't even seem the least bit jealous of his son's far superior strength, as a lot of men (*cough*Lionel*cough*) would be in his position. So how did that come about? Was he an atypical jock who didn't let adulation go to his head? Or was he a Whitney type who was changed by something that happened to him, or just changed slowly by life? I'm inclined to think it was more the former (atypical jock) than the latter. We know he had a good father who taught him a lot, even though they didn't get along. Also, we know that by the time he met Martha, he was a lot like he is now, and he couldn't have been more than a few years out of high school then. Also, how old do you think he was when he sneaked off to Metropolis to try out for the football team? Failing at that could have given him a dose of reality and helped him grow up a little. Ah, the possibilities! ;) |

I'd probably have to say that he was a jock, but he was probably nicer than Whitney was in high school. |

I think maybe he was one of those rare jocks who was nice to those around him and wasn't completely obsessed with himself and himself only. I picture him to be a lot like Clark, minus the superpowers. Ambitious, always trying to fit in with the people that didn't like him, and has strong realationships with the people that did. BTW, in "Hothead" Clark says his dad's posistion on the team was a tailback. Or...maybe you're right, my ears can play tricks on me sometimes. :-) ~Livvie~ |

No, you're right about that. But then in "Suspect," they said he'd been a quarterback. Either it was a continuity glitch (what a shock! ), or he was a tailback who eventually became quarterback. (You wouldn't happen to know what a tailback is, would you? I don't know much about football, and I've been wondering.) |

Don't ask me! I hate football! It is one of those sports that I find boring. (Don't get mad at me football fans!) |

I've started working on my "Jonathan as a teenager" story, though it's quite different from what I originally planned. And though I don't have time, as I'm already working on two other stories!
 But I just got an idea and started running with it. So we'll see how it goes. (The football part will be tough -- I'm no big fan either!) Anyway, ideas about what he was like in those days are more welcome than ever, now that I'm doing this! Smallvillian, you haven't weighed in on the subject yet. What do you think he was like? |

We could still team up if you want
;) Well, I think he was very sure of himself but well liked by his friends and girls alike. He was probably good enough at football to think he could make it on a professional team since he ran away to try out for one. I'm tempted to think he got over confident because in the school atmosphere he could seem to do no wrong. Even given that, though, I think he was a nice guy who dreamed of something more than pitching hay We know he didn't get along with his dad--maybe because his dad represented the life he didn't want. He bought a motorbike, too, so he definitely rebelled to an extent. We also know he had a temper, as his friends and Jonathan himself has commented on. But I think he would help people out and had good intentions. I don't think he would ever hurt someone for being a "dork." I don't think he was a bully. I think he was one of those that would give anyone a pat on the back because he *was* so confident in himself that he didn't feel threatened or in secure, if that makes sense. I had an idea for an interesting idea for a teen Jonathan fic, too ;) |

Don't forget that he and Nell dated too . . . I think maybe Jonathan was the one who broke it off . . . maybe he grew up and Nell didn't . . . she certainly acted like she was still interested in him in the Pilot ep . . . and very disappointed that Martha was around (the b***h - Nell, not Martha!). |

I know! She was snarking at Martha right to her face. Catty little creep. And how pathetic do you have to be to spend your life pining over the guy who broke up with you in high school? Oh, wait -- that sounds eerily familiar. Heredity strikes again, hm? ;) Anyway, I think you're right that Jonathan outgrew her. Thank heaven. |
