If you could change ONE thing about Smallville, what would it be?

I'm tempted to say the writers portrayal of Lana, becuase they can't seem to make their minds up how they want her to be.

HOWEVER seeing as I only get one choice I'm going to have to say I wish they'd never done the whole evil Jor-El thing. It's been a very inconsistent storyline, and its annoyed me rather than intrigued me  I just hope they resolve it well in 'Crusade'

What would you guys choose to change?

Ummm..... having Lana blow up at the end of Season 3 rather than Chloe? :toofunny:

Boy, that is a tough question. I mean, they do a lot of things so well. Even FotWs serve a purpose. I suppose the one thing I would change is having the writers not mess with canon so much. Evil Jor-El, etc....

You do?? I'm not even sure myself! Must be too early on a Saturday morning for me to be thinking. Did you mean the Jonathan/Jor-El storyline and Jonathan's heart problems? Actually, I don't think I would change that one, because it shows what a hero Jonathan is.

However, I would write a storyline for the fourth or fifth season where Clark finds a way to heal him -- not just keep him alive, but heal him completely. With all these powerful knives and keys and amulets and green rocks and Lord knows what else floating around, there's got to be SOME way to do it!

So what would I change that's already been on the show? I'm tempted to say "Lana" as well -- she's such a big part of the show she really needs to be better written. Or I might have let the baby live -- but then they'd have had to find another way to show Jonathan's heroism. :) I'll have to think it over. . . . Anyway, it's a very good question!

If I could change one thing about "Smallville", what would it be?

Gosh. Do I have to keep it at only one thing? I mean, there are so many things I'd change if given the chance.

First, I would get rid of the whole Kryptonite-changes-regular-people-to-super-freaks thing. It was only a cheap plot device to demonstrat Clark's powers in the first couple of seasons. It did nothing to really advance the overall story and character development.

Next, I would make Lex more evil. Right now, as has been the case for the last couple of seasons, he's firmly sitting on the fence. And, to me, it's just getting tedious. Lionel has been and continues to be the one doing all the dirty deeds while Lex is left selling Girl Scout cookies. I say, get rid of Lionel and let Lex take the plunge in to the deep and dark end of the pool.

Another thing I'd change, simply because I see absolutely no reason for it, is the geographic location of Metropolis. Back early on we learned that Metropolis was not the most prominent city on the East Coast ala New York, Philadelphia, and Boston (as we were taught over years of fandom) but instead is some kind of conglomeration of Kansas City, St. Louis, and possibly Chicago. At the time, I had my doubts but decided if it were for better plot development, I could accept it. So far, I haven't seen a reason for making Smallville, KS a suburb of Metropolis.

Finally, I think it's time to resolve the whole Krypton / Jor-El thing. Clark is an alien, he comes from a planet called Krypton. There is a communication of some type which may or may not be from his dead father telling Clark that he has to become supreme ruler of Earth. Clark doesn't like it, Martha doesn't like it, Jonathan DEFINITELY doesn't like it, and it probably would be any suprise to learn that most fans don't like it either. I still think it isn't Jor-El but I'm almost to the point where I don't really care. The fact is, no matter how it ends up, Clark's going to still grow up to be Superman. I say let's stop dwelling on the stuff we either knew about from day one or just don't care about anymore and get on with it!

I really like "Smallville" for a number of reasons. I think it is usually a well-written, well-acted, drama with believable character and plot development. In the last three years, I have been extremely pleased with this "new" take on Clark's teen years and anxiously await season four. But, that doesn't mean it's not without it's problems. And it's probably BECAUSE I like the show so much that I'm so critical. I like the fact that it's made Superman cool again and don't want that messed up.

heh Yeah, I think that would have to get my vote too! :heehee:

I know I'm gonna tick ppl off with this but If probably just get rid of Lana all together. Or maybe the evil Jor-El stuff. I'd also either do away with the marthe beign pregnant storyline or let the baby live.

Ah, I can't pick just one and I'm sure there is more, but it's too early and, I ddn't get much sleep...

I knew you guys would want more than one

Seeing as everyone is cheating....

I think they're going too far with the 'Kal' thing. Like wayne says, Lex should be turning evil now, and Clark IMO should be getting more confident. Instead Lex is making me feel sorry for him, and JE's meddling is making CK the jerk!

That said, I'm sooo still in love with the show, and it certainly made Supes cool in our house were I never really even thought about Superman before! :D

Well, as long as we're all cheating. . . .

I'd also want to take out the Martha/Lionel storyline from season 2. I don't give a rat's ear that the actors enjoyed working together! To me that arc made absolutely no sense, because Martha had as many reasons to loathe Lionel as Jonathan did -- she was blackmailed right along with Jonathan, and besides, the Rosses were her friends too. If she HAD to work for him because they needed the money, they at least could have shown her being more conflicted about it because of those memories. On the contrary, they had her tell Jonathan and Clark later that she'd trusted him and now she felt stupid about it. No kidding! How naive can you be?? Martha is supposed to have at least a little common sense!

And for her to hide from Jonathan the fact that she liked her job was just stupid. He's not a baby, for heaven's sake. She told him that sometimes she missed Metropolis, and he handled it just fine. (In fact, that whole secretive aspect they gave her in that season -- hiding that she liked her job, AND the key, AND the baby -- just rang false to me.)

Besides, the arc gave a lot of sick, perverted people the chance to think it would just be SO great if Martha had the hots for that slimy weasel, which makes me want to just :puke:

(I feel pretty strongly about this -- can you tell?)

The ONLY point to that storyline was that it led to Martha's discovery that Lionel was keeping tabs on her son, and they could have managed that some other way. Or, as I said, if they absolutely had to have her work for him, they could have handled it a lot better. Maybe have the Kents accidentally find out what Lionel was doing FIRST, and then have Martha go to work for him and do a Chloe-like investigation under his very nose. Now THAT I can see working well.

As for what you said, Dawn, maybe it'll happen in season 4. I think a lot of fans feel the same way, so maybe they've taken note. We can hope! If there are only going to be five seasons, as looks very possible, then now would be a good time to get the characters started on their ultimate paths. Besides, all those "A Hero Is Born" promos seem to suggest that this is the season when Clark really gets his act together.

What a great question…but one thing is not enough…soooo:

On the technical aspect:
1. I don’t like all those super close ups cuz you can never see the rest of the actors body language. A lot of missed opportunities that speak louder than words.

2. When the camera spins around the actors (it kinda makes me a little motion sick) ex: Relic

Story line aspect:
1. Having Clark on red K & then running away… & then on top of that fighting with his dad, stealing, causing property damage with really no remorse or apology.
(I personally wanted to smack him for these transgressions…please no hate mail on this one cuz I’m not talking about child abuse.)

2. That whole story line of Martha’s miscarriage…(that just hurt & so easily dismissed)

3. And last… making Clark a liar all of the time especially to his parents…(that bugs me to no end)

Other than that I love the show…

Just thought of another one! (Sorry, Dawn!) Martha and Jonathan should have talked more about Jonathan's heart problems in season 3. Here Martha's husband was going through all these health scares at a pretty young age, and we hardly got a clue what was going through her mind. "I'm giving you low-sodium turkey for lunch" just doesn't cut it!

As for Lex, I see what you guys are saying, but at the same time, I think they did a pretty good job toward the end of the season showing dark Lex coming out in response to Lionel. I mean, Lex's determination to see his father die in prison was understandable, given his father, but it was also a chilling glimpse of the ruthless Lex of the future. Plus, we're seeing more and more of the old "ends justify the means" attitude from Lex. That looks a lot like the start of a downward slide.

so far, nothing has really peeved me enough to change it. I see a purpose to everything they've done so far.
You gusy hate the Jor-El story? Come on! Admit it! It was really interesting to watch.

Okay, here is my vote.
Just don't bring 'Jason Teagues' into Smallville at all. It's going to take screentime away from the real plot and main characters, and it's just going to be extremely boring. I for one have no interst in Lana and her boyfriend.
When Adam had his scenes with Lana, (before we found out he was all crazy and evil and worked for Lionel, i loved that part) like in the physically therapy thing, OMG! that was soooo boring, and i can see it happening again.
So ya. Cut Jason, he has nothign to do with Smallville or superman.

Yeah, I think this season we WILL see Lex start to turn evil.

The JE thing annoys me mainly because I think its just an excuse to keep bringing out 'Kal'. I know a lot of people like naughty Clark, but I just hate it when a hero of the future treats people mean. The way he was in Exile didn't excite me, it annoyed me. (Although I admit Tom does look better as 'Kal' )

Yes, he most certainly does! :thud:

And I agree MaryElise. Those Lana/Adam scenes bored the crap outta me, and I'm sure so will the Jason/Lana scenes.

At least we can have fun mocking the J/L scenes! ;) There's always a bright side. (I will say for Adam that he called Lana on her attitude in the beginning. But it sounds like Jason's not going to do that.)

lol! Ya, i'm not the only one who liked ADam.
I thought he was a kewl character, i mean with the whole mystery behind him, and his bordering mental problems, which turned out he was really just ressurected from the dead. lol
His only job was so get close to Lana to get to CLark, but he couldn't stand Lana and kept pissing her off with theats and stuff, it was fun to watch.
I loved the scene were he died, and Clark was talkign to him.
Plus he killed Lana... in the future or whatever. lol GOT to love that. lol
