Yikes, I don't like the sound of that.
:( And I really don't like the sound of Clark's not needing him as much. Personally, I think the BDA needs him more than ever. And as for Martha needing to find a passion, would it be too old-fashioned and repressive of me to suggest that I'd think she would be kind of wrapped up in her family right now after getting them back?? Maybe it's just me, but that sounds kind of strange! If it's running the coffee shop, I'm sure she'll do a great job, but a "passion"? I just don't see it. They've always had kind of an apologetic attitude about her being a stay-at-home wife and mom, and I've never understood why. Even if that were truly a horrible thing to be, the farm is pretty much a small business (or two, or three!) in itself. |

That didn't come out very coherently. Now that I've calmed down a bit, let me try it again. I have nothing at all against Martha's working outside the home and/or finding a passion, except that it's terrible timing. I mean, if she's going to be away from home all the time and Clark's all wrapped up in being a football hero, and Jonathan's running the farm all by himself, I can see him ending up right back where he was last season, or worse. Besides, they've created this great Kent family dynamic and then they're always teasing us by showing us only little tiny bits of it. If there's one quality that defines Jonathan, it's the fact that he's a family man, that he thrives on being with them. He needs more time with his family, not less, especially as he's trying to recover. Honestly, what are the writers smoking? Hire Smallvillian and me -- I'm convinced by now that we could do a better job! :wall: |

Maybe they mean that Martha will work on finding her passion later in the season. Because I just don't think Martha will run off to find a passion right after he family gets back together. That would just be wrong, and if they did it that way I woul SUE the WB, Don't think I wouldn't. And what's this about Clark not needing Jonathan anymore? Clark is ALWAYS gonna need Jonathan, whether he's 16 or 60! Even when Jonathan is in the grave, Clark will need him. You never STOP needing your father. I don't care how "independent" Clark thinks he is now. Fine WB, make Clark independant, just make sure you give us a darned good reunion scene between Clark and Jonathan first. ~Livvie~ |

Amen to that, Livvie. (Told you that you should've written one of your own!) I hope JS will get a chance to do some interviews soon and talk about how he feels about this season. I don't always agree with him -- about Jonathan's actions in "Exodus," for instance -- but for the most part I think he's really insightful about his own storylines. And he speaks his mind, so if he said it was a good arc, we wouldn't have to worry that he was just being diplomatic! If I heard that he was okay with what's going on with his character, I might start to feel a little better about the whole thing. |

Don't worry Renee, keep your hope up. I still might do one of my own, it depends on how the WB does. If they do it where I don't like it, then you will know for a fact that I'm doing one. ~Livvie~ |

I'm still thinking about this. Sorry for being such a pessimist, but honestly, it sounds to me like the "consequences" are yet to come. Do you guys think they might be emotional ones instead of physical ones -- such as a bad inferiority complex or (heaven forbid) problems in his relationship with Clark? I wouldn't like to see either, but I wonder if that's where they might be going with this. The whole thing about him struggling with Clark's independence seems like it might be a hint in that direction. Of course, if the consequences are both physical AND emotional, I'll be REALLY mad. :fuming: |

You know, I was watching some scenes while looking for images today and I was thinking "My gosh, what ELSE could they do to the poor man??" In season one, he almost dies from exposure to a flower that Lex was partly responsible for. He goes to prison to protect Clark. He runs out into a tonado. Then he knows he may very well suffocate or starve but decides on death to protect Clark. I gave me chills when he said "You need to decide what's more important to you--your story or your life. I have." ::chills::: Then he get wacked in the face with a metal spike thing. He gets thrown into a car by his own son.He loses a baby and his son in less than a day. He offers himself to he know not what to bring Clark home. He has a heart attack because of JE. He has major surgery. He is at least somewhat hindered by poor health. Then he offers himself *again* to save Clark and is nearly killed. Sheesh. It's a good thing we already have a society! :ned: |

No kidding. I know bad stuff is always happening to the others on the show too, but they seem to bounce back a lot better than Jonathan does, at least recently. Season 3 did a real number on him, and I'm worried that it's going to be very hard for him to get over.
:( What we really need is an episode or two where his family takes some time to build him back up, but that kind of thing only seems to happen in fanfictions. (I agree with your post above, Smallvillian, about the writers only touching on the family's emotional issues and not going into them the way they need to. Honestly, I've read so many fanfics this summer -- including yours --where the writers seem to have a better grip on the Kent family relationships than the people who created the characters do! It's kind of pathetic.) Now that I've gone and depressed everyone, I'll stop. :ned: |

Personally, I'd like to see more of the Clark from Legacy but that seems too much to ask. :( |

Yeah, I agree - they want drama, but they're overlooking the drama in the Kent family scenes . . . my gosh, what is wrong with them?! |
