This is strange -- I seem to be full of discussion topics today! :) Here's something I've been wondering about lately: Since we all like the show so much, why do you suppose that so many of us find ourselves getting upset with the writers (especially G&M, but also the other writers) so often? It's a trend I've noticed here and on other boards -- a trend of which I'm a part, I should add. I have a few vague opinions on the subject, but I'd like to hear yours -- and think my own out a little more clearly -- before putting in my two cents.

Actually, I think the writers do a pretty good job most of the time. I grouch, but I do understand that different people watch the show for different reasons, and the writers have to cater for this in order for Smallville to stay successful.

For instance, I hate it when we get Lana scenes, especially when she takes her clothes off  so boring, but I do know why the writers do it...

Okay, first of all, I have ABSOLUTELY no problem at all with the scenes where Lana takes off her clothes. In fact, I'm hoping we'll see more of Lana, Chloe, and Lana this season than we have in the past! Heck, it worked on "Charmed"!! >:)

But seriously, I think one of the reasons I get so ticked at the writers is because they seem to constantly want to mess with a good thing. And I'm not just talking about the liberties they take with the Superman legend, either. I'm talking about the way they start getting a storyline going that starts making sense (Lana finally recognizing Clark as the great guy he is, Lex' suspicions of Clark, etc.) and then they just trash it all in the name of character / plot development.

I've just deleted about thirty lines that I typed on the rant I started in the last paragraph because this thought just occurred to me: "We are on the outside looking in. We do not know the whole story. There could be a very good reason why certain things are happening that won't become apparent until the end of the season or perhaps the series." With that in mind, I have to curb my outrage from now on. Granted, that doesn't forgive the times they've thrown the whole Superman legend out the window, but it does make one stop and think.

Another thing that we need to keep in mind is that Warner Brothers may have certain creative control over what is done on the show. I read an article a while back that speculated the whole "evil Jor-El" thing was just to keep it in line with the story they were working on for the Superman movie (J. J. Abrams' screenplay to be exact). But now, director Bryan Singer has thrown out that story in favor of a whole new one. If this were true and "Smallville"s writers were actually doing that, that now leaves them with a whole lot of explaining to do to explain the evil Jor-El stories as well as anything else they may have been doing to match up with that movie.

Definitely not a position I would want to be in. :faint:

Oh, please, Wayne, I beseech you, no comparisons to "Charmed"! I'm convinced that show exists solely to give Alyssa Milano opportunities to take off her clothes (for the edification of a largely underage audience, I might add)! :puke:

Aside from that, however, you make some very good points. It's true that there's probably pressure coming from many sides, and it can't be all that easy to write under those circumstances.

I don't have a problem with what the writers come up with, I mean well they did have one bad one which was 'Magnetic' but we'll forgive them for that.

They are extreemly talanted people and do an excellent job on the show, how they try and fit every day teenage problems into it.

I say keep up the good work!

I had heard they're going to be up to something this season that die hard Supes fans will recognize straight away. I can't wait to see what that is! Except, I may not have the knowledge to actually click on to the whole Supes legend connection until all is revealed

Should be interesting what the writers do with this whole thing! Whatever it may be.

Jonathan's Lady
I still have a big issue with so many emotional issues being swept aside quickly--the death of the baby, Clark's incredibly stupid behavior in the Exile arc, Clark's feelings about being responible for Jonathan's poor health. Everything is touched on but not done particularly well. The only thing I really thought was done well was when Clark tells Swann: "I won't let my father die for my mistakes!"

My, my. I had no idea people had such strong feelings about "Charmed". I personally don't think it's Alyssa who gets more "skin time" (though she doesn't miss a chance to bend over to reveal her two biggest -uh- attributes! :p ) I think the "skin time" crown goes to Rose MacGowan for that one. Man, I tune in every week just to see what she's NOT wearing!

And, BTW, my post should have read "Lana, Chloe, and LOIS..." not "Lana, Chloe, and Lana..."! Sorry about that.

As far as the big thing that die-hard Superman fans will get that Kitt brought up; I've been watching the previews for clues but so far, I'm getting nothing. Unless they decide the whole Kal-El thing will end up being a clone who will eventually turn into Bizzaro. Doing that would alleviate the writers of trying to explain to people who see Clark flying how he could do it. Turn him into a monster and people will accept it. Yeah, that makes sense. :wall:

Yeah, Smallvillain, I agree they do tend to gloss over some pretty emotional things which most shows would spend a whole season trying to resolve; but, this is "Smallville" and they've only got two more seasons to resolve all the other stuff and make Clark into Superman. There's just not enough time for all that human interest stuff!

Well I read something about an upcoming eppy that could be to do with the Supes thing, or may not, but I guess it's a spoiler so I won't post it here.

As for the whole Charmed debate, I've never watched it  However, I do tend to favor shirtless Clark scenes myself :blush

A hem, back to the writing...
