In keeping with our time-honored tradition here at the LJLS forum (well, okay, I think we've only done it once before, but we haven't been around very long!), I'd like to extend our very best wishes to Jonathan tonight as he returns. May he quickly fight off the effects of what happened in the finale, and may this season be much better for him than last!

(And I would also like to offer my sincere hopes that my partner-in-crime, Smallvillian, has her cable back by now! )

K-I have watched. Can I just say that I almost swallowed my tongue when they didn't just say Jonathan was ill but BRAIN DEAD?? Thank goodness Martha didn't pull the plug! I'll also add that Jonathan waking up when Clark returned was super-cool. They were linked to each other. It almost makes me think that as long as JE had control of Clark he kept Jonathan "out of the way" since he was seen as the biggest threat. When Clark broke the hold JE had over him, he also severed the strangle hold JE still had on Jonathan.

**Breathing a sigh of relief**

When the doctor said he was braindead I threw a cushion at the TV and the TV went out and for a second I thought I had busted the TV but the pillow had just hit the power button.

Wish he had more lines but you know what? He conveyed so much in his eyes in that last scene.

Amen to that!!

But I can't help wondering why JE didn't just kill him. I mean, thank God he didn't, but I wonder why! It's not like he had any reason to keep him alive, or did he?

DK--You're welcome to be a society member... ;)

Renee--I would LIKE to believe that some part of Clark was able to fight JE and that prevented him from actually killing him. Remember, the beam let go when Clark went into the wall. But ultimately there was so little of him left that Jonathan was bearky alive. Then, when Clark was truly back, it broke whatever hold JE still had over Jonathan.

Hmm, good theory. It makes sense. I wish they'd gone into it on the show, though!

I've got to get to bed, but I'm sure I'll be back to gab some more in the morning. In the meantime, though, just a parting thought: Raise your hand if you would have liked a better camera angle on that J/M kiss. :hiwave: I think I can safely say that was their hottest kiss EVER -- made "Nicodemus" look like a peck on the lips! Good thing Clark walked in when he did (how cute was that little throat-clearing, by the way!) or things might have gotten, um, interesting. :blush

Well, it was 3 months in the making so I'm sure they were making up for lost time.

Just a side note -- it was pretty cool that we found out what Jonathan's favorite book is! :) "Huck Finn's" a good choice. And a nice little poke in the eye for all those who think he's some kind of anti-intellectual!

To slightly misquote "The Philadelphia Story" (one of my favorite movies) -- "Jonathan Kent, you have unsuspected depth!"

But then, WE always knew that, didn't we? ;)

I usually barrow books but I actually own Huck Finn :)I could have done some of the reading! :D Can you imagine how horrible though. For all you know, your son is gone for good and your husband will never wake again :(

I do like that Jonathan was the only person "Kal" could recognize. It shows what a powerful bond he does have with Jonathan. Yes, Kal was cold about Jonathan but the point to me was that Clark was in there somewhere and did remember Jonathan. Then when Martha called him "Kal's" father, it was pretty obvious to me that he had been coached by JE to believe Jonathan was "bad."

Yes, it gave me a little shock when he said, "I recognize this man"! (Especially when he didn't even recognize Lana! :D ) It was pretty cool even though, as you say, JE had probably been holding flash cards in front of him that said, "Jonathan Kent = Bad" for three months.

(I'm going to show my shallowness now. That was a LOVELY photo of Jonathan. Have we ever seen it before? I don't think so -- I think I would have remembered that one! [/shallowness])

I only wish they'd talked about the deal! Do you suppose there's any hope they will in upcoming episodes? They need to resolve that SOMEHOW. However, when J. did bring up the subject of Clark getting pulled through the wall, you could see what a painful subject it was for him.

As for Martha -- that was an incredible speech they wrote for her. Far better than I expected. And Annette did a fantastic job with it. (She was fantastic overall -- I thought she was going to faint when Clark didn't remember her.) Martha's strength came from her family even though they were (in effect) gone -- from remembering them and knowing they would be together again. It was so beautiful! :bawl:

I am worried as to WHERE JE is though. I had hoped that they would not only destroy Kal, but show some kind of end to his father's evil tyranny :(

So much left unsaid. I so hope they go more in depth in the weeks to come. Although PLEASE, no more bad Clark

I liked how Jon woke up when Clark came back too, but will they ever explain the link/bond? Or are we to ever make up our own minds?

The absence of Clark's biological father does make me wonder. There is no way that he'll leave Clark alone. Clark didn't follow his destiny like Jor-el wanted. Makes me think that we haven't seen the end of him. Also I thought that was cool what Bridget said about fighting a father's will with a mother's love. Now we know Jonathan couldn't have stopped Jor-el. Martha was the one to stop him

It gave me a little jumpstart when Jonathan came popping out of bed the second Clark and Kal finally split! That was so awesome, and so unexpected.

My heart broke for Martha when Clark asked her who she was. Imagine not seeing your child for three months, and then they didn't even know who you were? At least Jonathan never had to suffer that. As soon as he was awake, Clark was back to "normal."

I really though JE was going to be prominent in this episode, and he wasn't, that disappoints me greatly. It's like they pretty much almost left "Covenant" events hanging.

Good point about not having seen the end of JE, though I hate the thought.

Technically, though, Jonathan could have stopped him (except for the minor detail of being comatose, of course!). Anyone could who could use the black K on him -- even Bridgette could've done that. But the way it worked out was good, because it gave both parents a part to play in freeing Clark from "Kal-El." Jonathan risked and nearly lost his life to free Clark from the red K, and when that wasn't enough to keep him from becoming "Kal" again, Martha risked hers to set him free once and for all.

What a family!

At last I've got a screencap of that cute Jonathan photo. Thanks and hugs to Dawn for making this for me!

By the way, there was something in that family scene that didn't strike me until later -- when talking to Clark, Jonathan referred to himself as "your father." Quite a nice reversal of all that "I'm not your real father" stuff in "Legacy"! As much as I enjoy bellyaching about the writers sometimes, they get full marks for that subtle but very important moment.

I love the photo--And I love even more that Clark has it--and in the loft no less. His own personal space away from the house. It'd be natural to have pictures of his friends but most teen boys wouldn't have a picture of their dad.

Actually I have a theory about that. I heard somewhere a long time ago that when you have a really strong physical link to a person in the natural relm, it can affect how the same two people relate to each other in the SUPERnatural relm. In this case the supernatural part was the phantom zone, but you know what I mean.

Clark loves his dad with all of his Heart, and likewise, Jonathan loves his son. When you share something that close with a person it affects how you relate in every scenario, good or bad. Clark and Jonathan shared a special father/son bond. When you have that bond, nothing can break it. Sure, it COULD be severed just a little, but nothing can completely get rid of it.
