Don't mess with JS
|
I said this in the "Facade" forum, but I'm bringing it down here too to encourage my fellow Jonathan fans to comment. I'm not sure if anyone else noticed it or if it's just me being oversensitive. The J/M moment grated on me a bit. He's worked hard so she wouldn't have to? That was very badly worded, considering she's worked alongside him all through their marriage. [And, I neglected to add earlier, Jonathan knows that better than anyone.] I've said it before and I'll say it again: These writers have no respect for stay-at-home wives and mothers. They may think they do, but they don't. (All the time she WAS at home, it was like they had to make excuses for it. I've got nothing against working women -- heck, I am one! -- but housewives work just as hard and ought to get a little credit for it!) Two more points that I didn't mention in my other post: In what universe would Martha the ever-tactful manage to word things so poorly that Jonathan would feel bad about the hospital bills? And after he said he'd known she wanted more than the farm, why couldn't they have thrown her a line about how she's been happy but she wants to try new things? I think it would have helped the scene a little. I mean, it's been her life all these years -- there's got to be at least a few things she liked about it. Please, TPTB, NEVER let Holly Harold write Martha again!! |

LOL. I kinda thought it was a little cold the way she mentioned the hospital bills. And then AFTER she said it, she was like...not that I'm BLAMING you or anything. Well Martha honey, it sure sounded like you were! And I can't believe that Martha would want to go into partnership with the Luthors! Yes, it's a different Luthor, but you'd think that after her experiences with Lionel she'd be more wary. Besides that, she knows that Lex has been investigating Clark, and lied about doing so. So remind me again why she trusts him? |

I don't know if she trusts him or not -- I think she's just thinking that they need the money and she'd enjoy the work, and isn't that worried that Lex will be a problem. Maybe she'll even end up spying on him, like she was planning to spy on Lionel before! That would be interesting. Kind of funny that it's the Talon that's going to be her "passion," though. How passionate can you get about a coffee shop? (That is, if your dead parents didn't meet there back when it was a movie theater.) Oh, by the way, there WAS one high point last night -- I mean besides J. and C. throwing the football. I'm talking about Jonathan's wardrobe. We got the denim shirt AND that nice tight T-shirt! (Same T-shirt he wore for those promo shots, I think? It looked like it.) Jonathan may not have had his best storyline, but still, I think the gods smiled on the LJLS last night. ;) |

Paranoid Schizophrenic!!!!!

I LOVED the part at the end where Clark and Jon played ball, but I found the whole episodes dialogue 'messy' There was scene after scene where I kept thinking 'That character would NOT say that!' It wasn't just Jon and Martha, it was half the cast! Renee, if I ever write the Kents that bad, shoot me! *Thinks a moment* Okay maybe not shoot :P: |

I've noticed that the Kents are now trying to defend Lex to Clark instead of the other way around. I'm okay with her working at the Talon, but yeah, that scene did seem a bit off. What other things did you notice were off, Dawn? |

Jonathan's Lady
|
I guess I settled for the intent of the scene more than the dialogue. It was, to me, showing Jonathan to be supportive, giving his blessing, that he doesn't keep Martha in the basement during the day like some might complain.
;) But yeah, I didn't think Martha would say what she did, The Martha I know might say "bills" but not specify hospital bills and even imply they are in trouble because of him. Bad writers! Bad! You must now watch "Magnetic" 2000 times as punishment. As far as saying Martha wouldn't have to work hard, I'm thinking it was just one of the many lines that just didn't come across well and should have been written differently. |

I think the intent of more than one scene, didn't match the dialogue. Then again, last week Hope pointed out something about editing in her review that I would have otherwise missed. It might not be all the writing, some of it's the editing! They film more then cut the scenes until the dialogue is 'off' somehow. I hate it when they do that!!! Still, I thought JK was loking pretty fit, all thngs considered ;) that along with wet, dunked Clark made my day! |

Yeah, I don't know what brought on the extra body sculpting but "Day-yum." He's beginning to look more buff than Clark and I'm not about to complain! :D |

No argument here, either.
;) If that's what triple-bypass patients/coma survivors look like these days, I'm going to start hanging around the hospital. Okay, now that I've got that out of my system . . . Yes, I'm afraid "intent of the scene" is a standard we have to go by too often. If you think about it long enough, you can make a scene like that make sense in your mind -- but you shouldn't have to! That Harold woman and her pen should not be allowed near the Kents (or most of the others, as Dawn says). Her attempt at a family scene in "Obsession" was almost as bad. You know what I think her problem is? Lazy writing. In "Obsession," she needed Alicia to find out what kryptonite did to Clark. So she took the easy way and had the Kents talk about "meteor rocks," even though they never, ever use that term. Same thing here. I think they wanted to show that the Kents are more financially strapped than ever (and probably also keep the "Jonathan's health" storyline alive), so she simply had Martha bring up the "hospital bills" -- even though the Martha we usually see wouldn't be that tactless. And if she inadvertently was, she'd think of something better to say after it than "I'm not blaming you." (Did you see the look on the poor guy's face? :( ) Man, it's pretty weird when we know the characters better than some of the writers do! (But "Magnetic" 2000 times? Smallvillian, you have no mercy! :D ) |

Why are they even worried about money as far as the farm is concerned? I thought Lex bought the farm? I remember watching it last night too, when I saw JS in the t-shirt I was like...ooooohhhh MUSCLES. hehe. |

Yeah, I wondered the same thing about the farm. I guess they took out another morgage to cover those hospital bills. :well: |
