The season so far; . . . and what's to come

Now that the show's on hiatus, I thought it was a good time to ask this. What do you think of Jonathan's storylines so far this season (what there were of them), and what are you hoping/expecting for him in the rest of the season? Should we gear up for another health crisis, or is it a good sign that he's survived stuff like being thrown around by Lionel and being infected with the nightmare toxin? What would you like to see happen with him when the show starts up again? Put all your Jonathan-related theories, speculations, disappointments, and wishes here! (Spoilers allowed if you know of any that are relevant.)

And when I say "wishes," I mean wishes for stuff that could actually happen on the show. So Jonathan showing up on your doorstep in a tux with champagne and roses doesn't count. Sorry, Smallvillian. ;)

Well, if Lionel can be healed by Clark/the crystals, I think it's time Clark got off his butt and finished the 'Crusade' (we know he has to at some point) Maybe then he could heal Jon :D

Well so far, I have to say, poor Jonathan hasn't been treated very well this season. He never gets any credit for all the great stuff he does. He gets crappy storylines and little to do--but I guess that could be said of every character this season.

Clark, more often than not, treats him like an old umbrella--not taken out of the corner unless you really need it. He never even gave the crystals any thought when they healed Lionel. Never mind that the poor man got nearly strangled to death and Martha only held up a rock. His worst nightmare was about Lana hating him *not* his father dying because of what he did. Don't even get me started on the snarky way he spoke of and to his father in Facade. I wanted to smack the crap out of him.

Jonathan is the major role model and influence in Clark's life yet is often treated as a footnote this season.

What I would hope is that Jonathan becmes JE's target because he sees him as his only real obsticle to Clark--(scooby-doo impression)"I would have had him too, if it weren't for that Jonathan Kent!" I'm hoping that Jonathan waking from his coma exactly when Clark returned to himself is no coincidence.

Clark finds the crystal to save Jonathan and uses it to also destroy the AI!

So far I'm not liking this season too much. They writers did so well with the first three seasons that the show is starting to sound like it's not that good anymore.

Except for Lana. Not that her storyline isn't crappy -- it just gives her plenty of screentime!

They really needed to tie up all of those loose ends from last season. Even if they didn't want to resolve all the JE stuff right away, they still should have given it a lot more time. And one of the most important parts about that story, to my mind, was that some sort of bond or connection had been created between Clark, Jonathan, and JE ("Talisman," "Crusade"). Even at K-site's spoiler forum, which isn't nearly as Jonathan-intensive as this place, they've talked about that. I'd say that was worthy of at least a LITTLE exploration. And then, of course, there's the possibility that it could lead to a cure. . . .

But unfortunately, since it's not John Schneider that TPTB are in love with, we got a tattoo story instead. :whatever:

If only there TPTB were women! :D You know, I finally got a chance to watch the Exile commentary and what I found disturbing is that they said something like they had to "figure out" how to use all of that with Jonathan. Call me crazy, but I really think they should have known exactly what they were going to do with it all *before* they introduced it! And don't get me started on them all drooling over Lana. They have GREAT stuff laid out for Jonathan and Clark, but instead we have to watch Lana's love life. :whatever:

And just as an aside: Poor JS and his bloodied knuckles. He's even more super-cool for finishing the scene before screaming out in pain!

They had to figure it out? Do you mean they had him make the deal without knowing what it was going to be? I haven't heard the commentary yet -- frankly, I'm not even sure I want to. I enjoyed the actor commentaries last time, but Tweedledum and Tweedledee have been irritating me so much lately I don't really feel like listening to them!

And did they say he really bloodied his knuckles??

Well, the guy made a big deal of pointing it out: "See there! Watch. See when he punched the wall? He's being all manly and tough and everything. Meanwhile his knuckles are cut and bleeding but he's all professional and actually finishes the scene, but when the director says cut he's like 'Owwwwwwwwwww!!!"

Poor baby.

I got the definite impression that they really didn't know what the deal actually was--which is the impression I got when I first watched Covenant. I was thinking "*that* was the deal"? Some of the clues don't even make any sense now, like "You said there would be more time." And yet in the finale they made it sound like he had no idea when JE would "call" for Clark. That's the reason he gives Martha for not telling her, too--that he simply didn't know when.

Aww! :ambulance:

No way would I be that professional. I'd be yelling, "I need first aid, NOW!"

Good Lord, I can't believe they didn't plan their storyline better than that. This season I could have believed it, but last season actually seemed to make some kind of sense, despite the plot problems you mentioned.

Apparently John must have a thing about not breaking character till a scene is done. Remember in Red when they said the rocks shot up all in his face but he still stayed in the shot? I feel like saying "Honey, they have more film. Really they do. You don't have to suffer pain. In fact, we'd rather you didn't!" :)

And like I said, it was my impression that they really didn't know. The way they said "A really GREAT springboard" sounded like they set up an idea and filled in the blanks later. But maybe that's just my impression.

I've seen spoilers for episodes through #14 now, and there aren't any major Jonathan spoilers at ALL -- just little things like "Jonathan has a conversation with Clark about this or that." Do you suppose there's a reason Jonathan doesn't have any kind of a major storyline yet this season, or do you think maybe they've just forgotten about him? :( (I still want him to have a scene with Jane Seymour, just for old times' sake, but it sounds like she has scenes with almost everyone BUT him.)

You know what else bugged me? That instead of talking about what a great father Jonathan is in "Exile" (during a Jonathan SCENE I might add) all they talked about was how beautiful Lana was and how great the chemistry between her and Clark was. After about 2 minutes I was screaming...ENOUGH ALREADY!!!

I mean come on, it was a real emotional scene (the scene at the club when Jonathan and Clark talk on the phone after 3 months) and Alfred Gough, Miles Millar, Greg Beeman, Ken Horton AND Michael Rosenbaum RUINED it.

grrrr...
