From K-site: *** Schneider Unhappy With Smallville's Direction? Special thanks to: Brian In a recent interview printed in the New York Daily News TV Guide Supplement, John Schneider spoke candidly about recent changes made to the show and how he feels about them. "Smallville has been anything but innocent this year," John Schneider said in an interview. "I think in this day and age what people are doing is paying a lot more attention to demographics and trying to give an audience what they want," the paper claims he has said. "There's only so much control that any of us have over our characters, so I think with what Tom has been given, he's managed to maintain an amazing level of innocence and integrity when he is Clark." As for his own role, Schneider said "There's so little parental involvement now. If I'm in one scene, then I fly up in the morning and fly back at night. I seem to be putting in a lot more miles lately." Regardless of how Schneider feels about the current lack of innocence, Schneider still stresses that "the writing on Smallville is still some of the finest on television - whether I'm a fan of the direction some of the episodes are taking doesn't really matter." *** I'll see if I can find a link directly to the article when I have time, probably later today. |

I can't find it anywhere, not even on the "NY Daily News" website. Maybe their TV supplement is a print-only publication, or maybe it doesn't get put on the Web right away. Can we still put it on the site if K-site's our only source? |

Hear, hear. That was a gutsy thing to say -- and he said it in a very classy and self-deprecating way. I just pray he doesn't get fired for it! |

They can't fire him - they'll have hell to pay for it in the form of lost ratings . . . many people watch the show just because of him. |

You know, it's really funny. I've been thinking lately "If we ever hear the truth about the show's horrible direction, it'll be from John. " He just seems like the very straightforward type and he knows what made the show great. That's why we love him
:) I demand more Kent family scenes! |

Thank God one of the cast members had the guts to speak up! The show is really starting to worry me and I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. |

Hi, Livvie! We missed you! :grouphug: Do you guys suppose that Tom feels the same way John does? I thought it was interesting that John specifically mentioned him (although it could just be because Tom is the star of the show, and his character is supposed to be the one with the most "innocence and integrity"). And I remember Tom complaining a little about the nudity when he was interviewed in that "WB Insider" special way back at the beginning of the season. |

:coolyo: To be honest I’m rather happy he stated this… I’m also not pleased with the way this season is shaping up either. Maybe it will be a wake up call to go in a better direction with the show. Decreasing the roles of Jon/Martha at this point & having his parents now just as “stand-byes” only dismisses them into nothing more than the people he lived with. They are what shape & influence his whole character; they put the human trait into the future Supes. When things get too rough or unbearable, it has to be his parents he goes to because they are the only ones that will understand his plight better than anyone else on earth. So I think the Jon/Martha’s role should be increasing as CK goes into his adulthood as his “sounding board” & his “go to people” when he just needs some advice or stability. So way to go JS for voicing his views… :D |

I just used the e-mail address on John's website to send him a note thanking him for what he said. I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for an answer; in fact, I'll be pretty surprised if I get one. I'm sure he gets more correspondence than he can handle. But I just wanted him to know that a lot of people appreciated his speaking up. If anyone else wants to drop him a line about it, here's his contact page: http://www.johnschneider.tv/contact.html |

After "Sacred," all I can say is that JS was so right about this. He was even more right than we knew at the time. ("So little parental involvement"? More like the parents being completely trashed!) I wish he'd get the chance to give more interviews and say more stuff like this. SOMEONE has to say it. |

I won't be emailing him, but he was very right . . . you know what worries me - people getting snuffed out for standing up for themselves on the show: * * * * * S P O I L E R S P A C E * * * * * Sam got axed because his character was being underused . . . and I'm sure he had a few things to say about that - and was promptly disposed of. Margot Kidder didn't like the way things were being taken with her character and Dr. Swann; she spoke out, and Bridgette Crosby didn't appear in Sacred . . . and her body is going to be found in 'Spirit.' Honestly, Jonathan's fate is still unsure . . . you don't think they'd snuff out Jonathan just because John Schnieder spoke out about the lack of integrity and parental involvement on the show? :( |

If they axed everyone who's been complaining lately, they wouldn't have much of a cast left! But they might axe him for other reasons -- e.g., the stupid argument I keep getting on another boards that it's "more dramatic if Jonathan dies." TPTB might very well buy that. I wouldn't put anything past them anymore. Please, whoever hasn't signed the petition yet, get over there and sign it!! :beg: (Not you, MLL, I know you did already. :) ) Oh, about that e-mail -- I got one back from John's assistant. I'd sent the note to John as an attachment, and the guy wrote to ask me to send it in the e-mail text because the attachment wouldn't open. He said he knew John wanted to see it. So I re-sent it. Didn't hear anything after that, but it sounds like the chances are good that John did at least take a look at it. I hope it encouraged him a bit! |

I thought that email was for business only . . . unless I'm misreading something . . . I want to email him so badly, but I don't want to get yelled at. |

What happened was that I first used that e-mail address for business: asking for information about CDs, and then later ordering them. Through that I struck up an "acquaintance" of sorts with John's assistant, although "acquaintance" might be too strong a word. I just sent him the occasional note to ask when the CDs would arrive or to thank him for sending them; got put on the e-mail list for things like the tsunami benefit auction; and stuff like that. So he already knew my name when I sent the note and asked if he'd mind passing it along. So I guess the deal is they don't mind your using the address as long as you've first contacted them about business or the website. But maybe you could use the mailing address that's provided on the site instead, rather than e-mail. |

If they do fire John for speaking up then the show was not worth his being on. Or Sam. Or Margot Kidder. I'm proud that they speak up for themselves. No one should have to be a doormat. Margot Kidder was considerate of her friendship with Christopher Reeve and she didn't deserve what she got. If the show treats people like that the best thing to happen to it is that it gets canned. The way the ratings are going they just might cancel the show anyway. |
