There's a difference between bitterness and regret . . . Jon has a lot of regret in his life . . . but I think bitterness is pushing it. |

Exactly. They're very different things. Maybe Millar just isn't good at picking the right word -- but as a writer, he should be at least a LITTLE bit better at it than that! :/ |

I hope they never intended him to be bitter! :fuming: ... but I can tell you right now ... trying to figure out what TPTB are or were ever thinking is a futile endeavor :wall: And if JS is deliberately foiling their attempts at messing JK up that way - then go JS!! :cheer: I've never seen JK as bitter ... I think he is convinced he always has to be strong and in charge and he feels ultimately responsible for anything that may happen to those he loves. (Gee ... sounds almost like Clark, huh ;) ) Now, sometimes I think this can come across as JK being harsh or rash, but it is all rooted in love for his family. No matter how "perfect" of a parent you are, there are going to be times you act out of emotion rather than patience and love. That doesn't mean you care about your family any less ... in fact, to me, it just means that your love and sense of protection towards your family can sometimes override that censor in your head telling you how to speak slowly and calmly and .... *ugh* PC. :p ;) |

Renee, this from one of the producers who okayed the use of plots/ideas for about FIVE different movies in one season of his show. If he's a good writer . . . I'm the Queen of Sheba. |

Very true! Speaking of PC, one other thing I really liked about that scene was when Jonathan called Clark on his use of psychobabble. You know, when Clark said, "It's not a sacrifice, it's a choice." I understand Clark was trying to do the right thing in a way that wouldn't make Jonathan feel guilty, which was noble, but it came out like Oprah-speak. I was really impressed that the writers had Jonathan point that out, because a lot of times writers on this show -- and on other shows too -- will just throw something like that out there and act like it's the sum of all wisdom, while the audience is thinking, "Oh, please." Honestly, I really think that was one of the best written scenes they've had all year. (I also loved the part where Jonathan and Clark started speaking at the same time. Another one of those little moments that felt very real.) |

Renee, I'm already blaming you for my lack of sleep last night (who can sleep with fanfic plots and scenes running through their head ALL night ... I should have just gotten up and typed them middle of the night  ) ... Now you are gonna have me watching all the J/M/C scenes from Forever again in a few if you're not careful ... *tries giving Renee a stern look ... but just starts laughing instead* darn you Renee! *shakes fist in air* :p  . |

Actually, other than the lack of sleep, it wasn't that bad ... kinda like being in bed and watching GOOD SV episodes (with lots of J/M/C) all night  And I would have gotten up and typed them except my mother was staying here for the night and that would have been fun to explain :p ************* Me: I know I said I just haven't been sleeping since the baby was born and we both know how exhausted I am ... And I do know it's two am, but I just HAVE to go type up these two fanfics running through my head right now ... My Mom: :wall: ************* ;) (resigns herself to watching Forever - the good scenes - again some time today) |

Think of it this way -- at least when you're sitting and watching the "Forever" scenes, you're getting some rest! :) How old is your baby now? |

C (my youngest) is 9 1/2 months old now. He was in NICU for a few weeks following birth and we basically just didn't sleep much at all during that period. Then, even though we got to bring him home, he has remained on oxygen and monitors ever since, so the ammount of sleep we get a night is directly proportional to how he rest and the number of times he sets off his alarms. Last night we had a monitor malfunction and I was attaching new probes and leads to him in the middle of the night, so we didn't get to bed until late anyway. |

Aww, poor baby. And poor Mommy and Daddy! Will they be able to take him off the oxygen and monitors any time soon? |

Our goal is to try to wean him off the O2 this summer ... the only downside being that if we are successful, it will mean him getting off equipment right before RSV season starts in September - a time when he could easily relapse. *trying to find something I have on him to email you* ***************** okay - check your email, Renee Now - Back closer to on topic ... If they kill Lionel and *gulp* JK, (and after we then beat TPTB senseless), what do you think will happen to Martha's character? |

The thing is, they never seem able to find anything that interesting for her to do now. The Talon job certainly isn't interesting. They could have made it that way -- maybe had her develop closer relationships with Clark's friends and become a kind of mentor to them, maybe even explored her growing relationship with Clark's future wife once they started working together -- but they didn't. So unfortunately, I can't see them taking her in any meaningful new direction, whatever happens to Jonathan. I'd really like it if she got a job at Clark's college next season, though. That would let her spend more time with Clark and give her a really good job for once. Plus it would give her and Jonathan some new things to talk about. I'm sure he'd be supportive -- he doesn't seem to mind a bit if she works, it's just the idea of her working for Luthors that bugs him (and small blame to him). But whatever happens to Lionel, I hope it's far, far away from the Kents. Ugh, he makes me sick with his lusting and the disgusting way he treats women (as I mentioned in the other forum that time!). |

Yeah ... careful what you wish for though ... M may end up working in the college cafeteria ... :fuming: Beginning to wonder if TPTB are married ... and if so, do their wives know what role they keep delegating to the mom ... *is frustrated* Still wouldn't mind a little Martha kicks Lionel's butt action though. :D I really hope they keep J/M going and allow them a little more influence next season. I mean, how are they supposed to shape Superman with 3 minutes every other episode. If they take them away, SV will become just another teen angst show without an anchor. :( |

Someone mentioned earlier about Jonathan and Clark speaking at the same time during the J/C scene in "Forever"...I think it was Renee? Well anyway, that proves 2 things. It proves that... 1. That Clark and Jonathan are a lot alike. 2. That as much as Jor-el tries to state otherwise, Clark is his father's son. Not HIS son, the father who RAISED him's son. |

I've mentioned this elsewhere, but I just realized I never brought it up in here. "Forever" was a really good example of JS's concern for continuity. I've always thought he was one of the hardest-working actors on the show when it comes to keeping his character consistent. (Man, this season must have really bugged him.) He usually makes Jonathan a very "touchy-feely" guy, always touching his wife and son when he's talking to them. But in "Legacy," I noticed that he never touched either of them once, even during the most emotional heart-to-heart talks. Which made sense, because he was dealing with a lot of guilt and remorse and feeling isolated from them. (He may have done the same thing in "Covenant"; I can't remember for certain.) And then in "Forever," he did that again -- never touched either of them until he and Clark finally had that breakthrough and hugged. It heightened the connection between this episode and "Legacy," which dealt with so many of the same themes as far as father-son relationships. If you watch, in the loft scene, after telling Clark all that stuff he'd kept secret for so long, he even gives Clark the same look he gave him in the graveyard scene -- head down and glancing up from under his eyebrows, as if ashamed and nervous. I don't think any of that was accidental; it would be too much of a coincidence. Nice, nice work. |

It's reading posts like these that make me realize how many of the subtle nuances I miss when I have to watch the episodes piece by piece instead of all at once. :/ Good observation, Renee ... I'll have to go back and watch them back to back. It is great when you have actors and actresses who are devoted and care enough about their craft and the characters they play to pay attention to the small details like that. Thank you to them  |
