Okay, I'm getting lazy, the words inside the asterics are thought, I have finals to study for so I didn't really want to find each and every one of the thoughts so I just put them in *asterics to begin with and I never took them out. Hope you guys don't mind also, enjoy! CHAPTER 10- 4 month anniversary Jonathan stood outside the jewelers shop, it was the 6th one he’d been in that day and he was starting to get discouraged. *If only I knew what I wanted for Martha.* Jonathan thought as he walked along the streets to the next store. He sighed as he tried to work out the complicated sum in his head, he didn’t have that much money to spend, but everything’s so dang expensive. He thought bitterly. *I’d hate to not get her anything. After all, it’s our 4 month anniversary, she’ll remember that. She’ll probably be really disappointed if I don’t get her anything* He thought. He got to the next shop and half heartedly looked in the window, the first thing he looked at was the price. Just because he was willing to buy the world for Martha didn’t mean he had the money to. *Hey, those prices aren’t that bad.* He thought, his spirit a bit brighter then it had been a few minutes before. He walked inside and looked through the glass display case. It was beautiful, it was perfect, it was…..a little too expensive. He looked at the price again, it was only a little more then he’d wanted to spend *I bet, with a little careful budgeting I’ll be able to buy it!* Jonathan thought. Jonathan quickly got the assistant to take it out of the display case so he could look at it properly. As he looked at it, Jonathan could only find one thing wrong with it; he spoke with the assistant about it and left the shop happy that Martha would get something nice for their anniversary. That Saturday Jonathan was wearing himself out by running in ever decreasing circles, Jonathan found it nerve wracking his room-mate Lance however, found the situation a bit amusing. Jonathan had just taken a list out of his pocket for about the twentieth time and examining it with increasing scrutiny to make sure he hadn’t missed anything. Jonathan started to put on his recently dry-cleaned suit. As he puts the suit on Lance asked from his perch on his bed. “Jonathan, Want to borrow one of my suits? You know you are more than welcome to borrow one. This is obviously a real special evening, why don’t you borrow one?” Jonathan looked in the mirror, and decided it would be best to borrow one of Lance’s suits. His suit was nice, and clean, but it was no where’s near as nice as one of Lance’s. Like Martha, Lance came from a wealthy background and had lots of expensive suits and clothes that he rarely ever wore. He preferred to wear jeans and a sweatshirt most of the time instead. Jonathan quickly took his own suit off and put one of Lance’s on it fit almost perfectly, and looked much better than his suit. “Are you sure you don’t mind?” Jonathan asked. “I didn’t, until I realized that it looks much better on you than me!” Lance replied dryly. Jonathan took out his list for the twenty-first time to make sure he hadn’t forgotten anything. Tonight had to be just right, No screw ups allowed! -Book Martha’s favorite restaurant – done. -Have suit dry cleaned – done. -Buy Martha some flowers – done. -Wash truck and clean inside – done. -Remember to bring present for Martha – At this point, Jonathan patted his pocket to make sure it was there – done. Jonathan carefully picked up the small bouquet of flowers off his bed, and was about to leave when Lance offered to let his borrow his sports car for the night. Jonathan paused for a moment and considered the offer. “No, thanks for the offer but, borrowing a suit is one thing, taking your car is going too far. Martha would wonder what the heck was going on if I turned up in your sports car. Thanks for the offer though, I appreciate the thought.” “Hell, Jonathan if I was lucky enough to be dating the prettiest girl on campus, I would want to impress her!” Lance replies. Jonathan simply grinned at him as he left to go get Martha. *If Martha wanted a rich boyfriend, she wouldn’t be dating me in the first place* Jonathan thought as he went down the dorm stairs. Across the University; Martha and Teri were ransacking each closet to find something for Martha to wear, or rather, Martha was ransacking both closets to find something for her to wear. “If only I knew what we were doing tonight.” Martha said, as she held up different outfits in front of the mirror. “Why don’t you call Jonathan and ask where your going, then you’ll have a better idea of what to wear.” Teri suggested as she ate a handful of popcorn. “I can’t” Martha sighed “Jonathan wants it to be a surprise. He just said ‘wear something nice.’” Martha mimicked Jonathan for a moment before returning to her normal voice. “Oh, he also said we’d be going out to dinner.” Martha added as she continued to look through both of their closets. Finally, she held up a floral, silk dress. “What do you think?” Martha asked. “That looks good,” Teri said, “Why don’t you wear this jacket along with it?” Teri picked up a nice casual jacket that was hanging on the inside door of Teri’s closet. “Oh Teri, thank you so much.” Martha said as she looked at the jacket, it was a pastel pink with white lining. She quickly put both the dress and jacket on and started to put make-up on. “Teri, could you do my hair?” Martha asked “Jonathan will be here in a few more minutes and I don’t want to keep him waiting.” She said. “Sure” Teri got up off her bed, and started brushing Martha’s hair. Somehow, Martha was ready by the time a girl from another dorm knocked on their door to tell them Jonathan was waiting downstairs. Jonathan had been standing in the lobby of Martha’s dorm for about 5 minutes when Martha came down. *About 5 minutes too late* he thought, girls had been walking by and smiling and some even laughed as they were coming in or going out for the evening. Martha walked down the stairs, and had to smile, Jonathan was holding some flowers, but he looked adorable. Jonathan saw Martha coming down the stairs and had to grin at her, Martha looked very pretty, but that was nothing new. She always looked pretty. “Here,” Jonathan handed her the flowers “Your reward for not keeping me waiting the usual 10 minutes.” He said. Martha smelled the flowers, and smiled up at him. “Thank you Jonathan” she said, touched by his thoughtfulness. She didn’t believe for a second that were just because tonight she wasn’t late tonight as she usually was. Martha went back to her dorm room and put the flowers in a vase “Aren’t they gorgeous?” She gushed to Teri before leaving the dorm. Martha and Jonathan were leaving the dorm as Martha said “Enough suspense, where are we going tonight Jonathan?” “I’ve booked a table at Café du Jardin,” Jonathan said. Martha was thrilled “I love the food there,” she said, a bit surprised Martha had dragged Jonathan there once before and afterwards he had told her that he thought they are pretentious and that their portions were too small. They arrived at the restaurant and Martha found, that Jonathan had even gone to the trouble of booking her favorite table, the one by the window overlooking the park. “Oh, Jonathan, I love the view.” Martha said as she sat down in the booth. “I know that’s why I booked this table.” Jonathan said, smiling at her. “Thank you Jonathan.” Martha said, she kissed him and then sat back down. Martha and Jonathan ordered and as they were eating, Martha kept getting a vague feeling that she was being watched, again. Not wanting to disturb dinner she dismissed the thought and continued enjoying Jonathan’s company. As they were drinking some coffee after the meal Jonathan spoke. “Martha, I’m so happy we’re celebrating our four month anniversary today. I-I hope we have many more.” He said, smiling at her. “Just so that we remember today, I bought you a little something.” He said, he took something out of his pocket and then handed Martha a velvet covered box. Martha opened the box and gasped quietly as she saw what was in it. A beautiful heart shaped locket was on a gold chain. She took it out of the case and held the chain in her fingers, allowing the locket to dangle. Martha’s eye welled up as she looked at it. “It’s beautiful.” She whispered. “Thank you, I’ve always wanted a gold locket like this.” She said. Martha opened the locket and saw that on one side of the locket there was an ornately engraved J and on the other side an M. “I didn’t have any pictures small enough to fit in the locket.” Jonathan explained. “So I thought I’d have the engraving done instead. But if you have any other pictures you’d like to put in there….” he started to say hastily. Martha reached gave Jonathan’s hand a squeeze “It’s just perfect the way it is.” She said smiling. She quickly put it on and asked how it looked. “It’s pretty, but not a beautiful as the woman wearing it.” Jonathan said. Martha slid along the booth and kissed Jonathan on the cheek. “I’m so touched that you remembered our anniversary.” She said, taking his other hand. “I actually thought you wouldn’t remember it and get you anything.” Martha admitted. “I feel terrible that I didn’t get you anything now.” she said, looking down. Jonathan lifted her head with one finger and kissed her gently. “As long as you like the locket, I’m perfectly happy.” He said. “You being with me is present enough.” He said. They returned to drinking their coffee and after a few moments of silence. Jonathan asked. “Do you want to go for a stroll in the park? Or would you rather visit the fair that’s in town?” he suggested. “It’s been so long since I’ve gone to a fair.” Martha said, smiling, “Let’s go there.” she decided. “First I’ve got to freshen up though.” She said. “You go freshen up and I’ll pay the bill.” Jonathan said, kissing her forehead. By the time Martha was done in the powder room, Jonathan had finished paying the bill and was waiting for her. They got into the truck and Jonathan drove to the fair grounds. As they were walking around they played various games, in which he won Martha a purple elephant and a Tom and Jerry paperweight in 2 of the games. It was then that Martha saw the Ferris wheel. “Oh, Jonathan, can we go on it, please?” she asked pointing to the Ferris wheel. “Sure.” Jonathan said. They both got on and Jonathan sat with his arm around Martha As the Ferris wheel started spinning, they both tried to pick out various sights from the University campus. They were having a pleasant argument about whether one of the blobs in the distance was the College Library as Martha insisted or the Administration Offices as Jonathan claimed. Jonathan was actually in the middle of a sentence when he found the bumper cars. “Hey look” he pointed. “Bumper cars.” He pointed them out to Martha. “I have an idea.” He said. “Who ever bump’s into the other one the most is right about the Administration’s office.” “College Library.” Martha countered laughing. 10 minutes later, Martha walked out a trying not to laugh. “So,” she teased, turning to Jonathan “When are we going to the college library?” she asked, grinning. Jonathan finally grinned at her and pointed out the Ghost train. “Lets go on that.” He suggested. The ride wasn’t all that scary, but Martha pretended it was so she could snuggle up with Jonathan. Martha then spotted the Tunnel of Love, after pointing it out to Jonathan they got on the ride and after a few moments, they were plunged into darkness, and then some supposedly romantic music started playing. Then a few backlit hearts appeared and what Jonathan guessed is supposed to be cupid “flies” past holding a bow and arrow. Jonathan could hardly hold his laughter in and Martha joined him as the ride didn’t improve and the decorations get even more bizarre. In one section of the ride there was a sign that said, KISS ME Jonathan read it aloud and Martha, not realizing he was reading a sign began kissing him. Jonathan didn’t want to complain and he let Martha kiss him until the end of the ride. They had gone on all the rides and were about to leave when Martha spotted a snack area that was selling hamburgers and hot and cold drinks. She didn’t want the evening to end and asked if they could stop. Jonathan bought a coffee and Martha got a hot chocolate. As they were trying to find a place to sit down, they started laughing about the tunnel of love. “I wonder if the person who designed the ride was ever in love.” Martha wondered. “Maybe, he had been in love but his heart was broken and the Tunnel of Love is his revenge on all courting couples.” Jonathan suggested laughing. They finally found a secluded bench and sat down. After a few minutes, Jonathan noticed that Martha kept touching her gold locket with her free hand. “Do you really like it?” he asked, thinking something was wrong with it. “It’s perfect.” Martha said smiling. She still looked a bit apprehensive so Jonathan asked if anything else was wrong. “I just still feel guilty about not getting you anything.” Martha admitted. Jonathan smiled as he took he hot chocolate and put it on the ground. He cupped her face in his hands and whispered “I don’t need a present Martha, you are all I want.” He gently kissed her to prove it to her and as she responded, he gradually deepened the kiss until they were wrapped up in each other’s arms, oblivious to everything else. It wasn’t until Martha moaned quietly that he realized that things were a bit too heated and that he was in danger of getting carried away. He gently pulled away from Martha in an effort to slow things down a bit. Martha didn’t say anything, she just kissed him again. Jonathan again pulled away, this time gently pushing her away a little when she tried to continue again, apparently not realizing how much self control he was using at the moment. “Jonathan, what’s wrong?” Martha asked. “We have to stop.” Jonathan said. “We’re getting too heated and I think if we don’t stop we’ll get too carried away.” He stammered. “I respect and love you too much to do that right now.” he said. Martha was mortified. She hung her head as she whispered “I thought you wanted me to respond like that.” Jonathan lifted her head so he could look her in the eye. As he did so, he could see unshed tears in Martha’s eyes. “Martha,” Jonathan whispered, taking her in has arms. “Making love to you is my greatest desire, but not in a park.” He said. “I don’t want our love to be grubby and secretive. I’ll never treat you like that.” He said. “I-I also don’t think you're ready. I’d rather wait until you are than do something you might regret.” He told her. Martha was very touched and she whispered “Thank you.” Before glancing at her watch and realizing what time it is. “We should be getting back.” She suggested. “You’re right.” Jonathan said. They both threw their cups in the trash and went out to the truck. The drive back to Martha’s dorm house was very quiet. When Jonathan stops outside her dorm He started to say. “Martha, I’m sorry, but….” Martha put her fingers over his lips to stop him speaking. “You’re right, I’m not ready. I was just trying to be what you wanted me to be and I’m the one who should apologize. “Martha, you never have to be anything but yourself with me. I will never push you further or faster than how you want to go.” Jonathan said. “I think too highly of you to jeopardize our relationship by asking you to do anything that you aren’t totally comfortable doing.” He said, Martha’s eyes welled up again and she whispered another thank you. Jonathan smiled at her as he gently touched the gold heart. “I may have given you a gold heart tonight, but you’ve held mine in the palm of your hand since the day we met.” Jonathan said. They got out of the truck and Jonathan escorted her to her dorm door. After kissing her goodnight, Jonathan whispered “I love you just the way you are, Martha Clark and don't you ever forget it!” |

That's beautiful! Really nice, especially the part about Jonathan not wanting to rush things until Martha was ready! It would do a lot of guys good to read this story, and find out how to properly act around a girl! I can't wait to find out why Martha had the feeling of "being watched" at dinner . . . could it be a clue for what happens next??? Keep up the good work Jess! :hyper: |

Here's another chapter, I won't be able to add on for a while, I just moved and the computer I'm using isn't the one that the story is saved on, so I can't exactly work on anymore of it until I get access to the first computer. Enjoy! Jonathan was studying for a finance test the next day, he was with Martha in their favorite coffee shop on the corner of 49th & Broadway, but Martha couldn’t concentrate. Jonathan was holding her hand and was gently rubbing the palm of it with his thumb as he studied. Martha had given up long ago on concentrating on anything and simply sat loving the feel of his thumb against her palm. Finally Jonathan sighed as he shut his text book, and said “I’m getting a headache with all this studying. Do you want to take a break and go for a walk in the park?” “I’d love to.” Martha said, getting up and putting her books in her book bag. As she was leaving however, Martha again got the feeling of being watched. She started to check to see if any one she knew was in the coffee shop but before she could Jonathan was already out the door. When they got to the park and were strolling towards the fountain, Jonathan saw a little path heading away from it towards a wooded area, as they wandered through the trees he saw the perfect place. Leading Martha toward a particular tree, he leaned back against it and lifted her on to a tree stump that was right by the base of the tree, making them the same height. He grinned and murmured “Perfect!” He stroked her cheek and then kissed her Martha giggled and said “It your fault for being too tall!” as she kissed him back. The continued kissing, but after a while the depth of her response began to scare Martha and she broke the kiss “I’m sorry.” She whispered as she leaned her head against Jonathan’s chest. Jonathan didn’t say anything at first; he just held her close and stroked her back. “Sweetheart, you never have to apologize. You know that I’m happy to take things as slow as you like.” He finally said. Martha kept her face hidden as she bit her lip and tried to decide whether or not to tell him why she’s so shy of showing her true feelings. No she finally thought, he might reject me or think less of me, I don’t want that to happen. Without knowing it a stray tear slipped down her cheek. When he became aware that she was crying, Jonathan lifted her up and sat on the tree stump with her in his lap, “Martha, I’m so sorry please forgive me, I didn’t mean to get so carried way.” “Don’t worry Jonathan.” Martha said, “It’s not your fault, it’s mine. I wish I could be more forward, I just need more time.” “Martha, I don’t need you to be anything or do anything you don’t feel comfortable with. I’m happy to wait and take things at your pace honey.” He said, still holding her close. They stayed under the tree just holding each other for some time. As the sun began to set, Martha shivered and snuggled up close to Jonathan. “Maybe we should go back to the coffee bar if you’re cold.” Jonathan suggested. Martha nodded but she didn’t really want to leave since she was so happy and content in Jonathan’s arms. She ran her fingers through his hair and raised her face to be kissed. Jonathan smiled and gently kissed her, their kiss deepened and as the shadows lengthened and the light began to fade they stayed wrapped in each others arms only leaving when began to get dark. The next day, Martha and Jonathan were sitting on the grass outside their finance class. They had just taken the Finance test and were carrying out a post mortem on certain questions. Finally, Martha lay back on the grass and said “Well, if I fail it is entirely your fault Jonathan Kent.” “Hey, if you didn’t study enough it’s not my fault.” Jonathan objected. Martha grinned “Well if you aren’t such a distraction I would have been able to concentrate a little more.” She teased. “Yeah, well, if you weren’t so smitten with me…” Jonathan said, teasing her. “I don’t believe it … the love birds are fighting!” A voice interrupted Jonathan. They both turned to see Teri and Gabe both standing a few feet away. They walked up and sat down next to Jonathan and Martha. ‘What are the two of you planning to do this weekend?” Teri asked Martha. “We’ve been so busy cramming for our test last class we haven’t even discussed the weekend.” Martha said. Jonathan cleared his throat and looked down at the ground; “I was going to suggest that we visit my farm on Saturday,” Jonathan said. “But if you would rather do something else Martha, I understand.” He hastily added. “I’ve been dying to visit the farm.” Martha said, thrilled. Jonathan grinned, relieved. “You better not wear anything too nice.” He warned and you better bring the grubbiest pair of shoes you own so you don’t ruin anything nice.” “Will I be meeting your parents?” Martha asked, excited. “Yes, of course, and they are looking forward to meeting you.” Jonathan said. “Have you even been on a farm before?” Teri asked from her perch on Gabe’s lap. “I bet your expecting the farm to be like the pictures in your childhood story books.” Teri teased. “I’ve never been on a real farm but I’m sure it’ll be lovely.” Martha said. Jonathan started squirming as he began to worry that Martha may be disappointed because, in his mind, there was no way the farm could be described as “lovely”. Teri and Gabe saw this and started laughing “Come on admit it, you’re expecting it to be pristine and pretty aren’t you?” Teri started to tease. On Saturday morning,Jessica was standing in the farm’s kitchen talking to Jonathan on the phone “Yes, Jonathan, I’ll do that …. No, Jonathan, I won’t forget …. Yes, Jonathan, it’s already been done … Yes, Jonathan, I’ll make sure … No, Jonathan, I won’t forget … Yes, Jonathan we'll both remember … No, Jonathan… Yes, Jonathan … No, Jonathan … Yes, Jonathan. I love you too. Bye.” She finally put the phone down and stared at it for a moment before lifting the phone off the hook and placing it on the counter. Hiram looked up from the morning paper “How many times has Jonathan called this morning?” he asked “Four times, but that’s not counting last night either. He called five times in as many hours.” Jessica said “He’s starting to drive me insane.” She said, sitting down with a cup of coffee. “The girl Jonathan’s bringing home must be pretty special for him to be making such a fuss.” Hiram commented. “I think she might be the one.” Jessica said, looking at Hiram over her coffee cup. “I already approve of her.” Hiram said “Because ever since Jonathan began dating her, we haven’t had as many fights.” “I’ve noticed that too.” Jessica said. “Do you think Jonathan is thinking of proposing?” Hiram asked. “I think it’s still too early too tell, but Martha has certainly had a positive influence on him.” Jessica commented. Hiram finished his coffee and got up. “I’ve got to get on, but if I were you, I’d leave that phone on the counter.” He said, putting his mug in the sink. “Just make sure that you are back in time to change before Jonathan and Martha get here.” Jessica said, out of habit. She knew Hiram wouldn’t come back to change he normally said “I’m not gonna dress up for no good reason, any visitors can take me as they find me.” Normally. However, this time he simply kissed Jessica’s cheek and promised not to forget. All Jessica could do was stare as Hiram walked out of the house. Meanwhile, at the college dorm, Martha was late, again. About halfway through getting her bag ready a girl knocked on the door,“Martha, Jonathan says that you will find him on the porch having a nap.” She called through the door. Terri of course burst out laughing at that. “I’m not that late.” Martha reasoned to a giggling Terri “Yeah, he’s only been waiting 20 minutes so far.” Terri kept giggling. And it was another 10 minutes before Martha hurried down the stairs and out onto the porch where she found Jonathan sitting, apparently fast asleep. Martha laughed and said “You’re a terrible faker Jonathan Kent, you know that?” He opened his eyes to find Martha looking stunning in a flowery summer dress and heels. “Martha, I think you look beautiful, but the dress really isn’t suitable for the farm.” He said. “I’m not going to meet your parents wearing old clothing Jonathan.” Martha said “I packed a bag that has a pair of jeans two shirts and some proper shoes; I’ll change at the farm.” She explained. Terri appeared holding a large bag “You forgot your bag Martha.” She said before disappearing back into the dorm. “Honey, we’re going to the farm for the day, not the weekend,” Jonathan pointed out. “There are only two sets of clothes in there; I couldn’t decide which clothes were more suitable for visiting a farm.” Martha said. Jonathan shook his head as he picked up the bag and put it in the back of the truck. Clearly traveling light isn’t a concept that Martha is familiar with. He thought, smiling. As they drove along the highway to Smallville, Martha became more and more excited about visiting the farm, as Jonathan became more and more certain that it’s going to be a disaster. Jonathan was sure that Teri and Gabe were right and that Martha’s expecting the farm to be like one in her childhood storybooks … all pristine and pretty. It seemed all too soon that they turned into the Kent driveway and Martha leaned forward for her first glimpse of the farm. As she did so, Jonathan took a deep breath and prayed that she wouldn’t hate it. As Jonathan parked the truck in the yard the front door opened andJessica and Hiram appeared on the front porch. Jonathan's jaw dropped, his father was wearing a smart pair of pants and a new shirt, that was impressive enough, but on a work day? That was next to impossible. Mom must have been working miracles for that to have happened. He thought mentally deciding to thank her when he got the chance. Jonathan took Martha’s bag from the back of the truck and guided her up to the porch. "Mom, Dad I'd like you to meet Martha Clark; Martha, honey, these are my parents Jessica and Hiram Kent." Jonathan said, introducing them. Jessica stepped forward and said “I’m so glad I’m finally meeting you Martha, Jonathan can’t stop talking about you.” She said smiling. “It’s a pleasure to meet you Mrs. Kent.” Martha said, smiling back. “Why don’t we go inside?” Jessica suggests. As they go inside Jonathan takes Martha's bag up to his room and when he came down they were all sitting in the living room, Jessica had obviously been cooking earlier because there were some fresh baked cookies and a pot of coffee on the table. Hiram is looking amused and is sitting back watching Martha and Jessica chat. As Jonathan sat down next to Martha he picked up his coffee and took a cookie. “Don’t tell her too much about the farm Mom, I’m going to show her around after lunch.” he said. “Martha, do you ride?” Hiram had a sudden thought. “Yes, I love riding; I have a horse of my own.” Martha said. “Why don’t you go on horseback instead of the truck?” Hiram suggested “That sounds great.” Martha said enthusiastically. Jonathan wasn’t sure about that idea but before he could say anything his dad was asking Martha how much riding experience she had, and discussing which horse would be best for her to ride. Soon Jessica had to go in and fix lunch, which gave Jonathan a chance to offer to give Martha a short tour of the farm buildings close to the house. He showed her the barn and the chickens and pigs. He also showed her the paddock where the horses are kept during the day. However as Martha was still wearing her heels she kept sinking into the mud. She laughed and said “Now I know why you insisted I wear sensible shoes and jeans!” she said. As soon Jessica called out to them that lunch was ready, they went into the house and had a lovely meal of cold chicken with several different types of salad, followed by blueberry cheesecake. As they were eating Martha commented that everything was so delicious. “Everything on the table was grown here at the farm, including the chicken.” Hiram said, amazing Martha “Jonathan, don’t forget to show the vegetable gardens and orchards later when you tour the farm.” Jessica reminded her son. “I won’t forget.” Jonathan said. After lunch, Martha went upstairs to change while Jonathan and Hiram went out to the stables to saddle up a couple of horses. By the time they came back in Martha was downstairs wearing a cotton button down shirt, jeans and some sturdy boots. Before leaving Jessica gave Jonathan a bag containing drinks and a snack for later. As he promised his Mom, Jonathan first took Martha the orchards and the vegetable gardens and then they rode out to explore the farm. It wasn’t long before Jonathan discovered that Martha was an excellent rider and they soon found themselves racing each other across the pasture. When they slowed down Jonathan fell in love the way with the way that Martha didn’t care that she was windswept. When she turned to him and he could see that she had genuinely enjoyed herself and was looking flushed and really happy. When they had been riding for a couple of hours, Jonathan suggested that they stop and let the horses rest. He leads Martha to a stream and they dismount and let the horses have a drink from the stream, before tethering them to a tree. Taking the bag of snacks from his horse and holding Martha's hand Jonathan goes and sits under a tree in the shade. When he opened the bag Jonathan discovered that Jessica has packed a large flask of iced tea, some muffins and some fruit. Martha takes a muffin and waits while Jonathan pours her a cup of iced tea. As they eat and drink Jonathan sums up the courage to ask how she likes the farm so far. “Your parents are wonderful, and the farm is amazing.” Martha said. “Thank you for inviting me, I’m glad I came.” She said. “D-do you think you could ever leave the city and live in the country or would you miss Metropolis too much?” Jonathan asked. Martha thought for a moment “They are both very different, but being different isn't a bad thing it just means that while I breathe exhaust fumes, you breathe fresh air; when I’m stuck in traffic jams, you’re stuck in the pasture; I go to sleep listening to sirens and car horns, you go to sleep listening to … err … wolves howl?” she finally guesses, smiling as she knew her idea was ridiculous. Jonathan laughed but she playfully punched him and said “W hat I’m trying to say is that as long as I’m with the person I love and who loves me then I’ll happily live anywhere.” Jonathan stared at her; he could tell that she was being sincere. Reaching forward he pulls her towards him and gently kisses her. Later as they lay on the grass together, Jonathan is staring up at the sky with one arm around Martha supporting her as she lies beside him, her head resting on his shoulder, he slowly becomes aware that Martha is playing with the buttons on his shirt. Peering down at what she is doing he sees that she is slowly toying with each button in turn until lit comes unfastened. When she gets to the last two he waits to see if she is going to undo them. As Martha isn't usually this forward he wonders if she is even aware of what she's doing. Meanwhile, Martha is lying in Jonathan's arms quite content, replaying the details of their recent romantic interlude in her mind. She loves the way that she feels protected and secure in his arms and she relives in delicious detail the feeling of when he gently laid her on the grass and kissed her, the feel of his mouth on hers and the bone melting sensation when he slipped his tongue into her mouth and started to explore. Sighing gently with total happiness she becomes aware that she is playing with the buttons on his shirt. Seeing that most of them are already undone she wonders if they just came undone by themselves or whether she had been undoing them while she daydreamed. Pausing for a moment she tries to remember… Did she undo them? Was Jonathan awake? Had he noticed? While she is thinking, she notices that if she undoes the last two remaining buttons then she will be able to run her fingers across his chest, she can see his chest hair just out of reach and the temptation becomes overwhelming. Inching her fingers forward she very carefully unfastens one of the remaining buttons, pausing in case he has woken up or has noticed she holds her breath, when nothing happens she moves on to the next button. As his shirt opens Martha glimpses at his well toned chest. Just then he stirs and as she holds her breathe the shirt falls apart even further and drops down his sides, now she can see his just how well toned he is and the golden covering of his chest hair becomes irresistible. Her hand hovers … she holds her breath … her heart pounds … her mouth goes dry … and then she places her hand on his chest. She can feel the warmth of his skin and the roughness of his chest hair on the palm of her hand. She can feel the rise and fall of his chest as he breathes and as she slides her hand forward across his taut abdomen and through his chest hair, she can feel his heart beating under her hand. She can feel her heart beating in unison with his as she begins to trace patterns across his chest with her finger tips. Suddenly she realizes what she is doing *What am I doing?! How could she have been so forward?!!*. She sits up, blushing furiously, however, her embarrassment is compounded by hearing Jonathan's voice say, "Aww, man! You stopped just as it was getting interesting! Oh, well, never mind … now it's your turn." She gasps as she wheels around to face him, "You're awake?" she stutters, stating the blindingly obvious, in her confusion. "Yep!" Jonathan says "Come on, you've undone my shirt and had your wicked way with my chest … now it's my turn. Do you want to undo your buttons or shall I?" Martha clutches the front of her shirt, "Jonathan!" she says “You can't be serious?" Jonathan levers himself up and lies on his side, "Now, come on, honey, it's only fair!" he says reasonably. Martha feels terrible, not only has she acted out of character and been caught out, but now Jonathan thinks that she should grant him the same rights that he allowed her. Feverishly she tries to think of a way out of this dilemma, his request doesn't seem unreasonable under the circumstances but she isn't feeling reasonable, she's feeling trapped and embarrassed. Finally she realizes that there isn't anyway out of this mess, so with her head lowered in embarrassment and shaking fingers she undoes the first button on her shirt. Maybe if I ask him really nicely, he'll take pity on me, she thought as she started undoing the second button, "Jonathan?" she says hesitantly slowly raising her head. As she looks at him she sees that his lips are twitching and his eyes are laughing at her. Furious she jumps to her feet "JONATHAN KENT!!" she shouts at him, "That is the meanest, lowest, nastiest thing you have ever done to me! How could you?" "Aww, honey! It was just a joke … I was only teasing you. I was gonna stop you after the next button. I would never try to hurt or humiliate you! It was just a joke”" he said, hoping that she would see the funny side. He was wrong! All her embarrassment at being caught undoing his shirt and fondling his chest was coming out as anger now. “I'm going back to the farm and then I want you to take me back to the dorm." She said, flouncing back to where the horses were tethered by the edge of the stream. "Aww, honey!" Jonathan called getting up and going after her. "Don't be like that! You know I would never ask you to do anything you weren't comfortable with!" he said, catching her up. "Well you asked me to do that and you knew I wasn't comfortable with it!" she said, as she reached the horses. "Please, Martha! Don't go like this!" Jonathan said catching hold of her arm. "Don't touch me!" Martha said pushing him away. "Can't we at least talk about this?" Jonathan pleaded trying to stop her from leaving. "No!" Martha said, turning round and shoving him away. Unfortunately, the ground by the edge of the stream was damp and as she pushed him Jonathan lost his footing and shot backwards into the stream. As he lay in the cold water with his head and body lying in the stream and his legs still on the bank, he briefly wondered if the day could possibly get any worse. As he couldn't get up with his feet higher than his head he had to lower his legs into the cold water before he could get up. As he stood in the stream dripping water he looked up to see Martha convulsed with laughter. “Does this mean I'm forgiven?" he asked hopefully as he scrambled out of the stream. Martha couldn't speak; she just nodded as she hooted with laughter. Jonathan stripped off his shirt and wrung it out before spreading it over a bush in the hope that it would dry. After pulling off his boots and putting his socks over the same bush, he then went and stood behind the bush and removing his jeans he tried to wring them out, but the denim held on to the water so he had to put them back on still soaking wet. Martha was still giggling so he went back to the tree and sitting down took the last muffin and tried to think of a way out of this mess as he ate it.. Martha who was trying to compose herself began to feel bad. As she reflected it was her that had behaved badly. He had just teased her. In addition, when she thought about it, she knew that he was speaking the truth when he had said that he wouldn't have asked her to do anything she wasn't comfortable with. He had always acted like a true gentleman in the past so she had no trouble believing him now. So what had happened? She had invaded his personal space by unbuttoning his shirt and then groping his chest. She had had a sense of humor shortfall and blamed him when he had only been teasing her. She had shouted at him. She had pushed him in the stream. Maybe it was time for her to eat some humble pie. Sighing she walked over to where Jonathan was sitting. Kneeling in front of him she just looked at him. Jonathan watched as Martha approached, at least she wasn't still leaving in a huff. As she knelt in front of him he eyed her warily. Martha didn't have a clue how to make things better between them. Then she had an idea! To Jonathan's amazement Martha slowly started unbuttoning her blouse. He watched in disbelief as she reached the fourth button, he could clearly see her bra and his mouth went dry. Reaching forward he put his hand over hers, stopping her from continuing. “Martha, don’t do this, please.” He said holding her hands so that she couldn’t continue. Martha looked up at him in surprise, “I thought that this was what you wanted.” She said confused. “Not like this.” Jonathan said gently releasing her hands and doing up her buttons. “Sweetheart, when we make love, I want you to come to me of your own free will, certain that you are doing the right thing and confident that your decision is the right one for you. I will never pressurize you into making that decision.” Martha felt a relief wash over her. At that moment she was sure that Jonathan was the man she wanted to marry. “Oh, Jonathan,” she whispered looking at him tears filling her eyes, “I’m so afraid that I will be a disappointment, that I’m not what you want, that you find my inexperience annoying.” she said as her lips began to quiver and the tears slowly fell down her cheeks. Jonathan reached forward and pulled Martha until she was sitting in his lap, “Martha, you are exactly what I want. From the first time I set eyes on you I’ve loved you. I sometimes worry that I’m too big, too clumsy and not refined enough for you.” He said as he gently rocked her and stroked her back. “Really?” Martha said looking up at him in surprise a tear still coursing down one cheek. “Yes, really!” Jonathan said with a smile as he wiped away her tears with his thumb. “I never knew that.” she said. “Jonathan you aren’t big and clumsy, you are kind, protective and reassuring. I don’t know what you mean about not being refined enough, you didn’t seem out of place when we had dinner with Mom or at that Art Society Meeting. Jonathan I don’t go out with you because you can bore me rigid by talking on and on about different wine vintages, but because you never bore me and because when I’m with you I can be totally myself and not have to worry about whether I’m doing or saying the wrong thing.” “Sweetheart, when I’m with you I feel that I can conquer the world. You give me confidence in myself and I’ve never been disappointed in you.” Martha looked up at Jonathan and could see that he was telling the truth, she smiled as she stroked his cheek and said, “Kiss me, Jonathan, make me believe in myself the way you believe in me.” Jonathan took her face in his hands and as he lowered his head Martha’s closed her eyes and parted her lips and as Jonathan gently began to kiss her she sighed with happiness. Winding her arms around his neck she pressed herself closer to him and invited him to deepen the kiss. Jonathan lie back on the grass and let Martha take control and reveled in her burgeoning confidence. A while later as they lay entwined in each others arms Jonathan looked up at the sky and said, “Honey, we should be heading back to the farm, Mom will be getting dinner ready for us and we shouldn’t be late.” “Hmmmm, and just how were you planning to explain your wet clothes?” Martha asked as she kissed the hollow at the base of his neck. “I guess I’ll just say that I made you so mad at me, you pushed me in the stream.” Jonathan said shrugging. “Jonathan! You can’t say that! What will they think of me?” Martha said sitting up and looking at him to see if he was joking. “Well, what do you want me to tell them?” he asked, chuckling. Martha thought, but nothing came to mind, so she was forced to say with more hope than conviction “I don’t know … maybe they won’t notice.” “I hope not, because I have no idea how to explain why I’m soaked but you are perfectly dry!” Jonathan said as he picks up their water bottle and food bag before standing up and helping Martha get up. |

Oh i lived this chapter. I really love how Jonathan wants Martha to go at her own pace and not go farther than she is comfortable with. I loved the teasing bit, that was classic. Superb chapter my friend  |

Nice chapter Jess! I really liked the changes you made to it after the first time -- really good job at explaining Martha's conflicting emotions, good use of characterization and of developing and explaining how a situation can quickly get "out of hand" when people aren't being careful -- I really liked it, good use of humor at the end -- how will he ever explain those wet clothes!? The only thing that I might suggest is to focus more on what verb tense you are using . . . there was some switching back and forth from present to past, and ideally, you should probably just stick with one or the other for the duration. Hope this helps! Can't wait to read more -- be sure that you check out my upcomming fan-fic "Superman in Tokyo" when you get the chance! -April |

I finally wrote the next chapter, I hope you like it! Martha groaned as she heard her alarm buzzing, she didn’t want to get up right now, she and Jonathan had been up late the night before and she was tired. She had come back from Jonathan’s parent’s house at about 8:30 the night before, but she and Jonathan had spent some time in the truck, and by the time Martha got into the apartment it was nearly 9:30. “Come on Martha turn the dang thing off.” Teri groaned from across the room. Teri wasn’t a morning person and by the sound of her voice that wasn’t going to change anytime soon. “Sorry, I was out late with Jonathan, and it took me longer to get to sleep then I thought it would.” Martha said, as she reached over and turned her alarm off. “I know.” Teri groaned “I have a boyfriend too, I know how it is.” Martha fell back on her bed and closed her eyes. "I really don't want to go to class today." she groaned. "Then don't." Teri said simply before rolling over and falling asleep again. "I've got to." Martha said. She got out of bed and went into the small kitchen that was in their dorm. She got out some cereal and was halfway through her first bowl when there was a knock on her front door. Martha got up and opened it. "Hey, I thought we were going to...." Jonathan started. Then he noticed how Martha looked. "Whoa, Martha, are you okay?" he asked. "I feel like I have a hangover." Martha moaned. "You're mom didn't spike the lemonade we had last night did she?" "No, but by the amount of lemonade you had, you'd be out until next week." Jonathan said he felt her forehead. "You're burning up." he said "Go back to bed." he gently pushed her towards her room. "I've got class." Martha said, resisting. "It's been canceled." Jonathan lied, "I put your name down on the roll sheet." "Okay." Martha said. The fact that she believed him showed how sick she was, Jonathan couldn't lie to her he was terrible at it. She turned and went to her room. Jonathan followed her and made sure she actually got into bed. Jonathan was tucking Martha in bed when Terri rolled over and noticed them. "Geez guys, wait until I leave the room." she said sleepily. Jonathan ignored the comment "Martha's sick." he told Terri. "Oh," Terri sat up and rubbed the sleep from her eyes. "What can I do?" she asked, while trying to stifle a yawn. "Get her a fever reducer" Jonathan said. "That's all I can tell she's got right now, but you might want to get her something for the flu." "Okay." Terri said, she grabbed some clothes and went to the bathroom to change, 5 minutes later, she left the dorm. Nearly half an hour later Terri came back in and held up a box of medicine; “ took me three stores, but I've got something for fevers." she said. “Great, I hate to wake her up, but she’s got to take something.” Jonathan said, he gently shook Martha, she groaned and tried to turn away from Jonathan but Jonathan stopped her from turning. “Martha honey, you’ve got to take some medicine, you’re sick.” “I’m hot.” Martha said, opening her eyes. “I know you’ve got to take some medicine for your fever.” Jonathan said. He put his arm behind Martha, ready to help her sit up and take the medicine. “I want Momma.” Martha whispered as she tried to sit up and take the medicine. “I’ll call them, I know the number.” Teri said from the door way, she went into the kitchen where she dialed the Clark house number. After only 2 rings a male voice answered. “Hello?” “Mr. Clark?” Teri said. “It’s Teri, Martha’s roommate.” She said. “Martha’s not here.” William said. “She hardly ever spends the night at home anymore since she started dating the hick farmer.” Actually she stopped coming by when you hired Damian, both things just happened at the same time. Teri couldn’t help but think but she said “I know sir, Martha’s sick; she said she want’s her Mother to come. Is Ann there?” As long as Teri had known Martha; Martha’s mother had been Ann, not Mrs. Clark, but Ann. “She’s spending the week with her mother.” Mr. Clark said “I’ll come and see if there’s anything I can do.” Wow, he actually sounds worried about Martha. Terri thought but then Mr. Clark went on. “She probably caught what she’s got from that hick farmer I know they went on a date last night. Maybe this’ll show Martha that not everything’s all fine and dandy with Jeremy …Jackson….whatever the hick farmer’s name is.” William said. “His name is Jonathan.” Terri snapped “And he’s not a hick farmer.” “Whatever.” Mr. Clark said. “I’ll be over in 10 minutes, and that hick farmer better not be over there if he knows what’s good for him.” William said, and then he hung up. “And you wonder why Martha tries not to get close to you.” Terri said before hanging up her line. “Let me guess, it was Mr. Clark who answered.” Jonathan said from the doorway. “Gee, what gave you that idea?” Terri snapped. “God; Jonathan that man acts like a hypocrite; he says he cares for Martha and wants her to have a social life, but then he belittles any boyfriends she gets. No one is good enough for Martha in his eyes. He hates any boy who so much as looks at Martha.” Terri said. “Except for Damian of course; Mr. Clark loved him. Oh…” she remembered “Mr. Clark doesn’t want to see you when he gets here. He said and I quote “He better not be here if he knows what’s good for him.” “I’ve got class anyway.” Jonathan said he went to the door “I’ll be by later to see how Martha’s doing.” “Okay.” Terir said. “I’ll make sure Martha drinks lots of fluids. And I’ll make sure she stays warm.” Teri promised Jonathan. Jonathan left that apartment and was just leaving the building when Mr. Clark walked up. William glared at Jonathan as if he was personally responsible for getting Martha sick. “Good day sir.” Jonathan said, walking past him to his truck. “Good day….” William muttered darkly to himself as he walked upstairs to the 3rd floor where Teri and Martha lived. He knocked on the door and waited until Teri came to the door. Teri had barely opened the door before William walked in and said. “I have no cases to work on today, I’ll be staying until I’m sure Martha’s on the mend.” Oh Crap. Teri thought. “Great. Martha will be pleased.” She said, pinning a fake smile on her face. I on the other hand will have gone crazy by lunch time. She thought, closing the door for William. |

Dumb Mr. Clark. In all the stories I've read with him in it, he's always such a tightwad and a meanie. I hope Marthat will be alright. It's never fun being sick. I'm glad you updated, I was hopeing that you'd update some time soon. |

Protector of Jonathan's Legacy

Aww, I was looking forward to seeing how Jonathan and Martha explained him being soaked to the skin in the previous chapter! Even though you have jumped forward, this was a very nice update. I hope that Martha gets better soon as Jonathan will be lost without his Martha. :) |
